I hope the newest "innovative" destruction of perfectly working user interfaces on Linux will be delayed that long but I guess they will come up with something before then.
While I am disgusted by the idea of abandoning piping and similar powerful unix-features I can imagine why he mentioned it in a kernel-article-comment. He probably meant Linux should implement some high-level (read: more complicated and less powerful) IPC-Model (Interprocess Communication) like Windows' DDE or something like that.
You should simply favor downloads over streaming and don't support a pile of shit like wmv,asf or the real- or quicktime streaming formats. Yeah, all streaming formats I encountered are shitty, seems to be inherent to their design although one should think they would be more robust to damage, all of them seem to have huge issues with some damaged bytes.
And where exactly do you see the analogy? For all practical purposes PDF is free and portable to all Operating Systems in existence. Most programs can export to PDF (except the ones from MS) and almost any computer has a PDF reader installed. There is no weakness (like the high price in the 90s) for MS to exploit.
The most stupid thing ever done to a file format is clearly the inclusion of some shitty MS scripting language in.asf and.wmv video files so those can open e.g. browser windows when they run.
While I agree with the general idea of your post this sentence just hit me. I am using ratpoison on all my Linux computers because I am a keyboard junkie and don't want to waste time on customizing appearance of my WM when I run everything maximized anyway (in Windows and in KDE, Gnome, Xfce, Icewm and Fvwm which I tried before I found ratpoison). Ratpoison simply allows me to focus on my consoles, browser and other programs without wasting space on the screen for things I never use and without wasting my time when customizing them away. It is a minimal approach where I add what I need instead of removing what I don't, a bit like Gentoo
Perhaps we should invent the/. preload taskbar icon then (runs only on windows, slows down your OS start, blinks annoyingly on each timothy post and if you click it you get dozens of unrelated popup ads)?
It would help to at the very least block all packets on the typical windows ports as those ports are not intended for internet use (135-139,445). Another simple thing would be checking port 25 outgoing for unusually high amounts of data (nobody uses his own private mail server to send several hundred megs of email per day). Nobody says ISPs can or should monitor their users in detail but at least the worst cases should be found and removed from the net.
Expecting a GUI just because MS indoctrinated you to believe it is more usable with one than without when the server will probably only run with a monitor for 1/2 hour per year is simply retarded.
Actually after about 3-4 Gentoo installs additional installs (provided the hardware is supported by linux which should be a job for the purchase department) will cost me about 1/2 hour of my time + lots of CPU time of the PC. Windows installs fragment the time I need more by asking dumb questions every few minutes (yeah, I know about unattended, it is a pain in the ass and badly documented) and cost me more of my personal time. Sure, I would probably bill more than the 1/2 hour if some company hired me (as a "consultant") but if I were their full-time employee I probably had other things I could do while waiting. Not to mention that linux installs can be scripted when you want to deploy really large numbers.
And how many of the things using streaming media out there today are live broadcasts? Most of them could use downloadable video formats since most of them are not live. How many of the live broadcasts out there are licensed exclusively to TV stations today? About the only thing I can imagine people want to see live are some sport events that get spoiled when you know the outcome before you see it. Everything else is either better suited for text (e.g. press announcements) or can be downloaded just as well. Content providers that think streaming allows them to regain control over their content since it isn't saved to harddisk by default are the bigger supporter of streaming media and we know they just fool themselves as there is plenty of software out there to save streaming media.
Its not like streaming media uses some magic crappy quality=>good quality transformation algorithm. The basic rules for quality/byte are the same for both types of video. The only difference is that streaming video/audio is practically unusable if the datarate is too low while downloading is still possible and can even be resumed later after switching off the computer.
Seriously, isn't Streaming Audio/Video just another solution searching for a problem that isn't there? Why should I use Streaming Media and suffer from bad quality, have to disable my other uses of my connection, risk having to wait for re-buffering,... when I can just download the same content in a proper format and use fast forward and rewind it, pause it,... in any way I like while watching it full screen in good quality?
Actually copying MS features is a relatively recent trend in OSS started by people trying to get as many converts from Windows as possible. Sadly they don't realize they are giving up more and more of the great features of Linux/Unix to appeal to ex-Windows-users.
You need a reality check if you think the start menu is there to make something "more usable". It is there to make transition from Windows easier, nothing more, nothing less.

It doesn't need a GUI at all. The only Company dumb enough to put GUIs in Rack-mount Servers is MSFT.
You could use zsh (basically bash on steroids) and use a shared history. zsh also has some nice additional history search features.
I read it a few weeks ago so I would've noticed if only examples were online.

Wouldn't "Back Bone Failure" be more appropriate for "Stepped on"?
I second that.

Just use a third party PDF reader and shut up.
...nowadays I'd pick horseshit over pigshit any day.

It does affect development time if you publish a list of developer phone numbers...

Wrong. A hardcore nerd doesn't have enough social skills to convert their relatives.
