In Linux there is no "Core OS". Package management should definitely not be in the Kernel (makes no sense) and not in glibc (makes no sense either) so it must be some kind of separate program.

  2. Re:Program Installation Locations on What's Wrong with Unix? · · Score: 1

Wrong: In Windows you specify a directory and then lots of important files go to the Windows Directory (and things go into the registry).
If we fix this it should be fixed in a way so everything a programs uses is in the programs's directory including configuration (no registry) and every library shipped with the program (although I would prefer package management systems with dependencies for that).

Sure it does. Otherwise the people might notice that a lot more people die in car, train and other "small" crashes and would demand more focus on that but you can't manipulate people with the "War against train crashes" as well as you can with the "War against Terrorism" (they won't allow you to remove basic rights to make trains safer because they know these are not connected)

    3) I use Closed Source Software when it is clearly better and at the Moment Opera is although I use Open Source Software for anything else

    4) I started with the Ad-Supported version, then I cracked it for a few months but since it is the Software I use most and I now earn money I thought it was worth to buy it so I did even though I did not get any advantages over the cracked version simply because I wanted to support the Development of my favorite Browser

    5) Opera uses very little Screen Real Estate now as I use a minimal theme, deactivated the big button bar and the Panel Selector on the left. the only things I have left are the Tab Bar, the Address Bar, the Menu Bar and one bar with my favorite Bookmarks (and the Scroll Bar on the right). Combined with the Ratpoison Window Manager that does not use a Window Bar I can use over 90% of the Screen for the current Webpage.

I don't have to worry about backing up 10-20 seperate pst/mbx/dbx/whatever email files.
This is one of the worst things with Email Clients in Windows. In Unix there are 3 or 4 common mail-storage formats (mbox, maildir) which are used by all MTAs, MUAs and similar programs. In addition they are all human-readable. When using IMAP or POP3 with the "leave on server" option they can even be backuped in a very easy way and even if they are downloaded you could just use centralized storage for the home directories and achieve the same.

Why is this all made so complicated in Windows with all their shitty binary proprietary, everyone-makes-it-own formats which are saved at custom locations as well? Outlook is one of the worst there. I had problems to import an old .pst in a new Outlook version more than once when I worked at a place where Outlook was used by part of the company.
