if someone building a house does something the same way more than once, it's a good idea. they use what they know works, and apply it over and over again. maybe some variations on a theme, maybe add another story here or a differently angled roof there.
but software is different. if you're doing something the same way more than once, it's generally a warning sign that you could be doing it better somehow. following that to its logical conclusion, a good programmer will never do the exact same thing twice. meaning that, as a good programmer, you're always doing something you've never done before.
that is why programming is hard.
it's like being an automobile manufacturing plant that never produces the same car twice. one day it's a civic hybrid, the next day it's an M1A1 tank, and the day after that you need two vespas, one that runs on gas and one that runs on fryer oil.
1. dell is good at building inexpensive computers. buying an expensive computer from them is not playing to their strengths. that's as much the fault of your uninformed friend as it is dell. don't order the filet mignon at the place on the corner that serves 40s with dinner.
2. did you get any ass? your story was like the lead-in to the geek dream. "so this hot girl i know was really frustrated with her computer. she asked me to come over and take a look. one thing led to another, and [insert tech/sex metaphor]!"
if it crashes into the ocean, we already have trained sharks that can cut it up with laser beams. and the earth's surface is like 70% water, so i think we're safe.
i have a gen 1 mac mini doing 1920 x 1080 on an HDTV. of course i have no actual HD video at that res to test it with, but i feel cool doing it. regular HDTV scaled up looks fabu.
there are some jumps in the video at the higher resolutions, but i'd be willing to bet they're due to the HDD not being able to keep up.
i hope the dock/port replicator works. that's the thing that scares me the most. i don't think any of the links discussed whether the dock and all its buttons would work. i guess i'll find out.
i used linux on the desktop for years. i lovezed it. then i got myself a latitude x300. here are some links to getting linux set up nicely on this machine:
wrong ninja page: link

gaim opens new IM conversations in a new tab
clippy is not a feature of open office (although the little lightbulb clipart popup thing is both ugly and a little annoying)
outlook just puts a little letter icon next to my clock when i get an email

long story short: sweet mary joseph mother of PETE! i guess it serves me right for buying a crazy little dell.
lol @ shiny foil
are there polar bears?
and a nigerian guy named eko who's completely awesome?
also, joe average doesn't use products from corel, sun, or novell. he does, however, use IE to look things up on google.
i was just going to say that stardock makes galactic civilizations, which is awesome. i pirated it at first, but i liked it so much that i bought it.
and i had no idea they had so many other products
yay to them.
i have another data point
female, 27, masters degree...downloaded a cat that walks around her desktop!
IT'S A DISTURBING TREND!
i've worked with two late 20s female coworkers (one a PhD, one a PhD candidate) in the last year
both of them downloaded free screensavers off the internet
you know, they have those crazy tiny glass bottles at the deli by where i work....
stick it to the man by taking that $77 and using it to buy black market cuban cane sugar. i hear the smuggling process just makes it taste sweeter.
