    1) Instead of taking the whole box I might just want to change some setting (share a folder, set myself up as an admin user on your box, that kind of thing)

    2) I'd say that the default is not very well chosen then. Not sure whether that behaviour can be changed on Mac OS, but I'm not sure whether one should even be able to change that behaviour, either.

    Have to agree with you.

I did the upgrade yesterday and it crashed somewhere in the middle.

Luckily I'd done a backup of my home partition (that's what you care about after all, right?) and I had an install CD around (for edgy). So I did the install which went really smoothly and everything worked perfectly. And since I had /home on a separate partition and had also made a backup of /etc it was really no big deal getting up and running again.

Actually, I'm happy that I've done the clean install. If I remember correctly my previous installation started out as Debian, then upgraded to Ubuntu (lots of manual fixes...) and then one dist-upgrade to dapper. Some things didn't work perfectly, for instance would I never be able to get to a text console once X was running. Never been able to fix that, but now with efty it works again.

I like the new gnucash and gaim, but Firefox 2 crashed on me within the first two or three hours after the upgrade or so :-(

This all on a Mac Mini (PowerPC), by the way. The installation didn't even corrupt my dual boot configuration, something I had expected to happen...

The first thing that came to my mind was an old German TV series: Raumpatrouille Orion. According to the German Wikipedia entry the Orion in Stargate Atlantis is actually a reference to this German TV series.

If I remember correctly they had some interesting stage settings which, among other things, included a flat iron which was part of the command centre and was used to steer the ship.

Well, I am not sure about this, but I think Beagle was available first. I think it is included in the latest SuSE which was earlier on the market than Mac OS 10.4. Don't know about Google Desktop search.

I have to admit that Beagle is not yet finished (no 1.0 yet) but it'll be ready earlier than Longhorn, I reckon.

For me Beagle is an example for Linux not playing catch up with Windows anymore but Linux having a useful (probably killer) application first to market.

Furthermore I think that Linux is in many regards more consistent and more polished than Windows. It doesn't get into my way so much and lets me do things faster and easier, that's for sure. Since using the last few iterations of Gnome I find myself swearing at stupid Windows more often. Explorer cannot even dream about being a match for spatial Nautilus, for instance.

And I prefer Linux to Mac OS though I'd recommend Mac OS for new computer users.

I got the impression that a lot of Linux hackers use hardware from Apple. Linus, for instance.

This "niche area" really might not be worth Macromedia's time, so a free Flash player is a good thing, IMO. If I have a choice I usually visit the HTML version of web sites, but some are only available in Flash.

OTOH, I wonder why Macromedia cannot just recompile the player for Linux on PPC. After all they've got a player for Mac OS already. Can't be too hard, can it?

Apple's just faster than Microsoft in copying things. And they're copying better/improving stuff in the process, I guess.

Gnome doesn't have to do anything. If users don't like Gnome they can use something else.
If they want features they can try to convince the developers that the requested feature is desireable, implement it themselves or at least make it easier for the developers to understand what they want and how they want it by creating a functional spec.

    Well, for me, it does.

Well, I just got a Mac mini and tried Mac OS X for a few days now. So far I'm pretty disappointed and will certainly stick to Linux.

While Exposé does improve the productivity in comparison to Windows, it doesn't match multiple desktops, IMO. Also, Mac OS X feels slower to me than Gnome, doesn't come with so much software I need (iLife might be interesting but I don't need that) and doesn't even look better, IMO.

I'll keep it on the hard disk though to have a look at iLife at some point in the future or maybe I'll even get some games. But for me, Linux is already the better choice for day to day use.

Microsoft doesn't lose any money that way because they don't sell IE. If security of IE can be improved that way it's also a win for Windows as a whole. Not to mention the users.
