Bah, verizon is my first experience with a cell phone company, and it blows! They bascially flat out lied to me. First they said if i get a certain plan, then all of this certain area was covered. Covered to me means that i have a decent enough signal to carry on a conversation without being disconnected. Then they promised that a new calling plan would be available, now they say they never will do sucha plan. I'm glad my contracts up soon..
Actually i thought that as long as ONE party knew the phone conversation was being recorded, then it was legal. Maybe it differs by state, your milage may vary.

Glad to hear greed is more important then people's rights
one should never argue with a major corporation when death is on the line.
Ya, we should allow them new powers to keep themselves alive. Buinesses must be kept alive!
The majority of the people I know use services like Napster to download music etc. that they never have any intention of paying for. Comments like, "I haven't had to buy a CD in months!" abound. So, here the commons problem gets tested en masse, and the greedy short-sighted people screw us all over.
And why should they? Most music out there is utter crap, very few cds have enough songs on it to justify paying $20. You can hear it most anywhere for free. Would it be better to plug my stereo into my computer and make mp3s that way? Not that i even really could, the music i like isn't mainstream enough to ever really be played on the radio. if i could get a cd player for my car without a radio, i would. Why should anyone pay so that some big ass companies can attempt to control things even more? I really don't want to encourage them to continue making the music they are. I would not mind to line the pockets of the artists directly.
To those of us who who've got every album released in the last month filed away on a RAID somewhere, you are dumb. The correct solution to "CD prices are too high 'cause of the RIAA!" is not, "...soooo I'll steal 'em!"
Where's the theft? If i walked up to a car i like and somehow cloned it and drove off, did i steal a car? Or to go the other way, should all farmers unite and lower food production to drive up prices, and defeat technology that could stop world hunger? Yes tech like that would put out of buisness the farms, but i think it is for a greater purpose. Everyone does have the right to food, just as everyone has the right to listen.
Napster does not work. There will be another solution. It might be SDMI. That would be bad. Unfortunately, with the way online distribution has been going so far, we're not giving them many choices.
What, you think that mp3 will just disappear? Napster seems to be working just fine, it has a lot of users and they are downloading quite happily. SDMI won't make mp3s dissappear, b/c no one will use it. You can't make consumers buy something they don't want, and if they don't want your product anymore, you disappear.
I dunno, they also are claiming they won the distro wars. RH may have the most installed linux systems in the US, but as meantioned in the article, they do not in europe or china. I hope these statements aren't prelude to RH becoming just another slimy company...
I know that my my win2k machine boots slower then my linux machine, with the same hw execpt the linux box has a 150Mhz slower processor. It also loads more software.
Actually i'm kinda worried that might really happen. Could lead to nasty censorship. imagine if all adult sites had to be in.sex...i think shortly after we'd see some isps blocking that whole tld..kids would be good, b/c i doubt an isp would block that, and parents could know for sure if the site was kid friendly.
Yes but another big part of evolution states that the weakest members must die off. We don't let that happen. Not that i'm saying thats a bad thing, but i'm willing to bet all the lifeforms we attempt to remove with drugs, sprays and other poisions are evolving faster then we are.
I'm boycotting. I'll never buy another CD from a label as long as the labels exist. Not for any reason. Unfortunatly most people just don't care. I told my gf what the RIAA was trying to do, and what they would really like to do (go down the same path DVDs have), and i asked her, knowing what they are attempting, would you still pay? She said yes...its sad, but i think that is the stance of most people.
A VCR allows me to play and copy a VHS tape. One could argue that i could just buy a brand new VHS with no ware, and play it once into my computer recording it as an MPEG. Yet VCRs are perfectly acceptable, even though i've copied it to another format.
Actually, you are wrong. There are laws reguarding trade secrets. One such law states that if someone just flat out broke in and stole the recipe for Coca-Cola and published it, Coca-Cola could sue that individial and order the recipe off the web (or whatever). Anyone that saw it will have to pretend like they didn't and may not use the formula.
It still is CDE looking; i took one look at those and thought thats what i was looking at. I looked at the screen shot, the back to my desktop on the computer science machine i'm on, and wow, its almost the same thing but with themes.
I don't care i lost karma, its not like i have alot anyway. I just get upset about stupid moderations. Besides you have to attack dumbasses, its the only way to keep them in line:)
Ok, well why don't you switch from sending real letters to putting EVERYTHING on a postcard. Lets include your bills, medical facts, etc. People do send stuff like that over the net, and don't want it to be seen. Imagine if you got arrested one day b/c you emaild your grandmother that you had to spank jonny b/c he just would not listen. now you're in jail for child abuse. If you think the gov't doesn't care about you b/c you're not important, think again. Go ask some former soviet block citizens just how much the gov't didn't care about thier private phone calls. Many people were a bit more then upset to find out thier neighbor had been recording everything for the gov't.
Please explain why i must be punished b/c others can't control themselves? What if i don't want society in my life? I don't care to kno wmy neighbors. Just b/c i live around people doesn't mean i have to be like them, or that they have the right to tell me what i can or cannot do. Just so long as i'm not causing them harm.
Well, i believe pgp will integrate itself into outlook and eudora. I've used it with outlook before...just click a button saying you want to encrypt it. The only difference is when you hit send, you must pick the key of the person you're sending to. Thats probably what average users still wouldn't understand. We need to educate them on this. Just as we don't use postcards for all our affairs inthe mail system, nor should we be using unencrypted email in the electronic system.
Ya, if it becomes that a majority (60, 70%) of people drive drunk, and not just at a specific time but usually, then yes the law is outdated and needs to be redone. The only reason for the gov't to keep a law around that most everyone violates is so that you can arrest most everyone at a whim. There is no reason to keep a law that no one follows. Its illogical, and it goes against the values of the society.
Even the BBSs shouldn't have been shut down for that. Would anyone sue the USPS b/c a bomb was delivered via it? Of course not, anyone thinking that would be thought insane. Would the post office be shut down b/c a package with a bomb in it was stored there until it was routed to the correct address? Or how about if the phone company stored a threatening voice mail for one of thier customers? I understand how you wanted to provide some background; the background is meaningless here. Usually something wrong now was also wrong in the past (morally; laws should reflect the morals of the society they are created in).
I work for Verizon. We're not all bad.

In this case, they are leaving people alone. They should not leave buinsess alone though.

It's disgusting, but it's business.
Thats redundent.
b/c we have stopped evolving.
Heh. Well i'll admit i've stopped and looked...but i'm sure you could have found a background of her on the net. :)

More like .35 a track. I'm losing the art??? Big f'ing deal. I never once bought a cd only b/c it looked neat.
Why bother? Just use one of the many free alternatives.
A VCR allows me to play and copy a VHS tape. One could argue that i could just buy a brand new VHS with no ware, and play it once into my computer recording it as an MPEG. Yet VCRs are perfectly acceptable, even though i've copied it to another format.

Perhaps what is needed is a wrapper class that will take a generic call and map it what whatever desktop is installed/in use.
It still is CDE looking; i took one look at those and thought thats what i was looking at. I looked at the screen shot, the back to my desktop on the computer science machine i'm on, and wow, its almost the same thing but with themes.

How is this troll? Authors DO get paid as it is now, and the idea of first sale is to combat the possible abuses of copyright.
