Thats the reason it was banned at my school too. The kicker was it wasn't students downloading that was a problem, it was people from the outside downloading that killed it. Those slow modem users held connectios for so long that things getting out had a lot of problems, while things going into the campus were just fine.
Just as they shouldn't ban anything. Colleges are supposed to be haven's for free speech, and once you start banning one thing its easy to ban something else. 'We're already banning this, so why not that?' At any rate ANY ISP should be giving the status of common carrier and exempt from how people use thier network. If i dialed my friends computer direct, would the phone company be liable if i xfered a copyrighted song? No, just as it would not be liable if i used it to make a threating phone call. If the RIAA wants someone to sue, its the individuals, not any of the inbetweens. At any rate it seems to me that most people are violating copyright law, so therefore the law should be nulled.
No, i believe the reason people use the IPs set aside for private networks is b/c they are running a private network. I'm sure a company does not want all of thier computers to be acessible to the entire internet. Those ranges were set aside just for that purpose, and so that a company with 10,000 computers would not suck 10,000 real ips out of the pool. It also adds a layer of security, since packets with such internal IP numbers are not routed to the internet.
Who said/. was unbiased? It expresses a certain opinion all the time. Even the slogan, news for nerds, stuff that matters should tell you that. Stuff that matters to/. is whatever happens to catch the intrest of the editors. They never claim to be unbiased, if fact they tell you they won't be, so why are you getting upset about it?
See, your problem is you think i have no moral fiber, just like you are lacking. Its spineless fucks like you that is messing up the world. 'Anything to make a buck' You people with that attitude make me sick. As far as what Malda did with his money; i don't know, maybe he did donate it. I honestly don't know either way. At anyrate, its hard to think i was brainwashed since i've had my thoughts against being able to own ideas long before i started reading slashdot. Don't assume that other people are as shallow and corrupt as you; i know i could be prefectly happy living in the middle of nowhere without the 'comfort level' i currently have. Selfish people like you should be shot; you obviously have no care of anyone but yourself. Go rot in hell.
So i'll find another job. Thats exactly what my dad had to do when his job disappeared. Your arguement is flawed anyway; i don't sell software, i sell my time during which i create software. Artists won't be going away any time soon, they were around long before we had record labels raping consumers and the artist alike. And artists did make a living off their work before the labels. Why do you think they wouldn't be able to do so because of mp3?
i think it is b/c you're an old guy; one thats been brainwashed to believe that ideas, art, etc IS actually something that can really be owned, that somehow, making an exact duplicate hurts someone in some way. Don't give me that buiness has a right to crap either. Businesses are not people and cannot have rights. They exist only b/c we allow them to, to serve a purpose.
Tips should never be required. As for lousy service; leave them 1 cent or so. maybe they'll get the hint. I hear you when you complain about running out of drink. For me thats the single biggest factor in determining how much of a tip someone gets. I usually leave 15-20% if i never have to ask for another drink, it just appears, and i'll leave as low as 1 cent for waiting 30mins to ask her for another.
Certain jobs that people preform for you usually involves tipping that person. Waitresses (not the girl at BK though..), pizza delivery people, etc. are usually tips. I disagree though that people that don't tip are jerks; if the service is lousy, i don't tip. Why should i? i tip b/c i want to encourge the person to continue providing good service. And i'm a college student, soo if i can afford it, i think most people can.
Actually from what i understand, deCSS has NEVER been used in pirating a DVD, the MPAA couldn't find one person that did. Anyone know of anyone that has?
You have that wrong; since a pc is not stereo equiment, it IS legal to rip cds to mp3 for your own use on your computer. It is also legal then to transfer them to your Diamond Rio (i meantion that product since it is the one that brought about the court ruling. Do a search on/. for it, you'll find that mp3s on your computer IS legal).
All elements of look and feel effect functionality. An icon on a desktop is part of look and feel, but also provides a functionaly of starting a program (on both macs and pcs...)
The comment was directed against you in 50years, when you are not selling that software but some people still want it. There's nothing wrong with selling software, i never said that. So what if someone makes a new version of wolf3d? And if you justlet the software into the public domain, there is no requirement that you open the source. It would just be a free game for those that were true fans of it when it first came out. If a company is afraid of someone taking thier ancient product and making a new version, well why don't they make thier own? I personally would feel honored that someone still wanted to use my 10year old code, and trying to force a profit out them someone wanting to do just that WOULD be just plain greed at that point.

Well thats what i said... :)
Well that would be the requirement. It can't be obvious to other professionsals in the industry. It doesn't have to be honest to joe blow.
I appologize. I was in extra cynical mode then, and took his post as sarcastic. I see now that is is not. Sorry about that.

What's an IP holder to do, according to slashdot?
Realize that there is no such thing as IP.

Even joe blow may want someone to install a new HD for him...i don't think its that easy if this system is in place.
the SN# you are talking about is built into the Dos FS i believe. Reformatting the floppy will assign a new SN.

I never even heard of NVIDA before the TNT2 came out. Everyone i knew had voodoo chip.

Look and feel cannot be patented...this was already decided. Thats what the tabbed pallette is, just a look and feel interface to something.

Capitalism is the best model for the development of TECHNOLOGY. It is NOT the best model for the development of society. God help us if it is...
Its hard to make money on something you don't sell. It is corporatism and greed that makes the software 'for sale' to begin with.
Farmer fred can also do the same once he's gronw the first batch.
Really? Find me a case where the drug dealer was charged with murder when someone overdosed on the drugs he sold that person.
