    Except that what if we both are paying equally and we disagree? Lets also assume we don't have enough seperataly to buy either of us a lunch (yes i know, its not likely..). you forget that its NOT just your money thats paying for it, its everyones. And there is a diffence between the library deciding not to offer Jugs magazine, and it being told that it CAN'T. The library is a public service. The library may not offer the magazine because it might feel that the community has no need for it. On the other had, if the library does know there is a need for it, then by all means it should offer it.

    No, the intent of the first amendment goes far beyond that. Its intent is to protect freedom of thought. Its why nonestablishment is included as well as freedom of the press and freedom to assemble. Look up the word politics in the dictonary; it has a much broader meaning then most people give it.

    You're not paying for 'thier gay porn.' Last i checked an internet connection was the same no matter what site you looked at. And the price of computers doesn't change b/c you want to look at different sites either. Its the same price for you if they decide to look at either one. Why do you care what they do anyway? How is this not a first amendment issue? The internet is a medium, just like books, mags, etc etc. The gov't has not right to tell someone that book can't be published, but they can say it can't be viewed on the internet? Freedom of speech comes with the freedom to ACCESS(read, listen) as well. Free speech does no good if noone is allowed to hear it.

    Local gov't have no more right to filter then does the fed gov't. ALL must adhere to the First Amendment. Parents may filter as much as they like out of THIER OWN childrens' lives.

    Still, so what? How would they know that? How would they know who had that number? How do they know its not a router for 5 other computers in the house? I have yet to see anyone marketing b/c differnetly b/c they kept seeing the same ip visit the site. Its not equivelent b/c even if they have my ip they don't really know anything abouit me, or even if its the same ip. Besides, i had cable modem, and my ip did change every now and then. So what?

    His arguement that linux sucks is based on a number. That number double counts redhat's security errors. Why would that not be important? I would argue the same way if the article was written that MS sucks based on a number were expliots were double counted.

    No, i think he's on the mark. You seem to admit there's something wrong with your statement about mem usage increasing over time. I have interdev crashing whenever i type Request.Form.Key( i )...as soon as the last ) gets typed, it dies, even with intelisense off. Consistently, w/the newest sp. To be fair my machine is the only one doing it; but we all have the same hw and software. I've also had other quirks that have caused me to reboot. Like i couldn't drag any windows or icons anymore. So no i don't think he's claim that it still crashes once or twice a week is wrong, i have these problems everyday. Other people working with me have similar problems.

    Except that a tape IS made for the purpose of music; computers are far more general then that. How many people do you know that buy tapes but do not put music on them? Now how many people buy a computer JUST to copy music onto? I suspect the ratio for the 2nd case is far far less then the first.

    1) Britney DOES NOT own her songs. The label does. 2) So if you record a song off the radoi and listen to it, thats ok? but downloading it is not? Its odd that you say i don't have the right to listen to something. Do i need permission to hear your voice too?

    If you knew your (recent) history and saw the older star treks, you would know why your statement is illfounded. Just b/c something is in SF right now, doesn't mean it won't be. Most of the things thought to be pure fantasy in the original star trek is common place now. Science fiction is called just that because it does start off inthe basis of science.

    You can't incite people to riot, and you can't say things which can reasonably be expected to result in the immediate harm of others.

    Even if you are inciting a civil war to throw off an oppressive gov't? I know thats not what we're talking about here, but you need to be very careful about making such restrictions.

    We don't have to change ANYTHING to comply with anyone. Why the fuck do you think other countries should have a say in OUR local law? Please look up the word soverign in the dictionary, b/c last time i checked we were a soverign nation in which the highest law in the land is the Constitution.

    Um, ok what differnce does it make if the GUI is embedded in the OS or can be removed? Other then the fact that a buggy gui will prevent you from using your computer or takes up lots of room if you don't need it? You can use linux w/o ever seeing the command prompt if you like. Oh, and the flip side of your GUI is easier then text is text is more powerful then GUI...go figure.

    I agree; but i think the original poster was comparing apples to oranges. vi and edit are both old text screen text editors, whereas notepad is a more modern gui editor. gui are usually much more easier to use by non-techies then their command line counterpart.

    Ya gedit probably would be a bitch on Solaris, but couldn't you use nedit? I actually perfer nedit as a graphic editor then those other ones i mentioned. At any rate i was trying to point out that the poster was comparing an ancient text editor to a modern gui one, which i thought to be unfair. I think anyone that uses notepad would be capable of using one of the 3 gui editors for linux i mentioned.

    I didn't say anything about installing windows or linux :) But since you brought it up; redhat is getting better with its installs. If i remmber correctly, you can pick a default workstation install and off you go. The cd is also bootable.

    No, but gedit or gnotepad+ is...i think you want to be comparing vi to msdos's edit command...but then why not pico and msdos's edit?

    B/c you shouldn't need to be carded to watch movies, play games, drink, or smoke, etc. Age restriction laws at their very heart are flawed. You wake up one day at 21 and suddenly overnight you are able to handle drinking, but the day before you weren't?! Its insane.

    Probably the problem is that people don't notice any effects right away, so they think well its not doing anything that bad. I'd probably take back my cell phone if the radiation was dangerous. I think it would be grounds for getting the money back to buy the thing, and being released from the contract.

    Water here (in PA) is about $0.99/gallon; milk i think is about $1.30/gallon (haven't bought it in a while). How is that cheaper then $1.75/gallon, which i pay for low grade gas?
