Amen. i found linux b/c of my school, i like linux b/c its not licensed. I keep trying to explain to my friend who is a big stock trader that no, no one will figure out how to license it. And if they did, it would fail misersablely...he never believes me, but you can't circumvent the GPL.
Actually, i got linux b/c i liked Solaris that we used in college. I was like cool, unix for my pc. And yes one of the reasons i'm going to stay w/it is b/c it is open source; i only dl programs which have the source code available; that way if things break i can fix them, whereas in windows i have to reboot or say i can't use the program. And while your average person might not care, i'm sure they have a local geek that could fix shit if they were using OSS.
1. I just put that there as a nice quote, not intending for it to have anything to do with my comments on the article. 2. You can't engineer someones personallity, but if you keep telling a child as he grows up that he has "perfect" genes, i think that would over inflate his ego, wouldn't you?
No i'm not saying that...as far as my intelligence, perhaps you should reevaluate yours before commenting on mine. If you had read the post correctly, you would have understoond that i was talking about a kid (read, around 6 years old) had his ego too pumped up b/c he knew his iq was high. Get it? I guess not, or you wouldn't have posted anything to begin with.
What does it matter? Whether its voice or data, the phone does the same thing. It takes sound (from modems and people alike) and carries it over the line. Why doesn't anyone remember that a modem phone call is still just a regular phone call? And for those people who would like to tax modem calls, then lets tax fax machines as well, since they don't transmit anything understood by humans.
The isps already pay for lines don't they? Basically you'd be paying for your phone line, then extra to use that line..connecting via modem is EXACTLY the same as placing a regular phone call. Why should you pay more for it?
*sigh* Last i checked, aol does not do java or javascript in its email, just some very simple html. So i dunno how 'just opening the email' would steal your password...esp since if you don't have it stored, where will it steal it from?
I think unfit parents are already a problem, and its most of america. Parents today seem to think raising their kids means sitting them infront of the tv or radio. Which is why they bitch when something non-kid friendly comes on. Seems to be why they bitch about the internet too; they want the abilit to leave their kid in front of something else to entertain their child so they don't have to deal with them. Nice huh?
I'd have to agree, plus our imperfections give us something to strive for (namely to work against them or such). Besides, wouldnt you have the same problem from an engeeniered kid that you would from one that knew they had a very high iq? Namely they are a snobish pain in the ass that won't learn a damn thing. Socratic wisdom begins with realizing you know nothing at all; only then do you begin to learn truth.
Little off the subject, but i was told when i got my cable modem if i changed ethernet cards to reset the cable modem, then it would forget the MAC address and get it again.
Does anyone realize that NT is actually an improved version of an OS just as old, called VMS. Correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe M$ actually hired the creators of VMS and said 'now build us an OS.'
Its a cycle tho...the phone companies are buying each other out again...they'll have to be broken up again soon too...but breaking up MS would proably solve the problem, too much power in anyone's (or company's or govs) hands is generally a Bad Thing (TM). And today money seems to equal power, so breaking them up into lots of smaller pieces would spead the money more.
I dunno about that....there are alot of kids here that pay $22,000 + cost of books (which is high)...which makes me wonder are univerities in need of money? My school seems to have enough to put up stupid electic signs all over campus...would they do that if they were hurting for money?
Except i thought part of it was to put filters at the ISP level so you lost the decision to get to something, where unlike video games where even if its rated R or whatever, youi still have access to it.
Amen to that. Plus, could anyone point me to a resource that says kids that see violcence or porn get fucked up? There's voilence in cartoons does anyone try to ban that? Give me a break, most kids i know have seen porn in middle school, and guess what, THEY ARE NORMAL. wow imagine that..
I know people that do that...and if you clickon the image it takes you to slashdot. While it might not be considered legal, it gets traffic to slashdot...honestly i don't see why companies are afraid of stuff like that since they get more advertisement for free...
Well, while i don't like MS to begin with, i don't think they'd do well for other reasons. Has anyone played an MS game? They suck, hardcore. How many big titles have been on the MS label? If i recall the only half decent game was a boring flight sim, that barely did anything, and crashed alot. Also, i don't know why they bother, the computer is the best gaming platform around! I got tired of those low res slow things years ago.
um, i'm moving to linux b/c i'm SICK of buniess' involvement in how i do things on my computer. I'm sick of MS and other software vendors treating me like i'm worthless and that even tho i paid 50 they still can restict in every way what i do w/that software. Besides MS is already nervous.
"Microsoft learned working with standards groups bolstered its position over competitors."
What is this shit? MS if all for standards, as long as THEY control it. The standard has changed. You must now upgrade to the latest version. Funny how i'm being taught that the way to design software is to keep it backwards compatible. You know, not changing the interface? I hope MS gets smashed to tiny little bits.

Oh, and no that doesn't include installation of cable tv (which is saving me $5 off the cable modem price).
Holy shit, i pay $40 a month for cable modem AND STILL HAD TO PAY A $100 INSTALL CHARGE! Ugh!

Anyone see Gatica??? (sp?) At any rate, just b/c we can do something doesn't always mean we should.

Does this mean the Canadian gov't will open then scan thier snail mail? In the US that would be a federal offense. or is this something different?

Well i'm sure they've already broken other laws...whats one more?

Remember how AOL then retracted it only a few short days ago?
