there is also the Put, which is the opposite of the call more or less. When the strike is greater than the stock price, you can 'put it to them' meaning, if you are long (purchased, given) a put you have the right to sell shares to the writer (seller) of the put at the strike price.
of course you can also short calls and puts as well.
options have an intrinsic value, which is related to the price of the stock and a time value which is related to the length of time to expiration. Time decay sensitivity is measured by Theta.
There are various other measures as well, DELTA is similar to the Beta of a stock price and measures the cahnge of the option price with respect to the stock price.
VEGA is a measure of volatility
RHO is the measure of price w/ respect to interest rates
GAMMA measures the change of DELTA with respect to the stock price..
For all you number crunchers out there, you can download a program to calculate these values (if it hasnt changed since I used it) as well as the black's scholes values as well.

I recommend the textbook as well, as it talks about many types of strategies with options as insurance/hedge devices, etc.
seem too harsh, but if you see that anonymous coward post, I was still fuming over that (while responding to yours). I am not sure about the long run, AND like you have an interest in this deal working out. (I just purchased several out of the money calls several months out, due to the beating it took recently)
Analysts downgraded both companies. Legg Mason analyst Todd Weller wrote in a note to clients that Symantecs' 20 percent sales growth rates will be dragged down by Veritas's slower sales, which are forecast to rise 10 percent. ``From a near-term perspective, the negatives outweigh the positives.'' The merged company will have a low-teens growth rate, he wrote.
Standard & Poors Downgraded it as well
Sure the acquirer MAY lose value, but not usually 25% but the Coward that posted the above is too busy showing his own ignorance.
I'd say that market thinks this is at least a good thing for Veritas if not Symantec also.
While you may disagree with my opinion, S&P downgraded the stock, and
other analysts do not like it as well - American Technology Research analyst Donovan Gow said the market's negative reaction reflects the stock market's puzzlement over why Symantec, a leader in the rapidly growing market for security software, is buying Veritas, whose sales have been rising at a much slower clip. here
Symantec is down 25% from monday. I'm not saying I'm right, but do a google and there are several sources that agree.
doesn't like this much, Symantec is down 8% and Veritas is down slightly as well, and so far has failed to approach the takeover price of around $30 bucks a share. Probably due to increased competition in the secuiruty market.
The only Star Wars games that I really got into (even though Im a fan of the original movies), was Shadows of the Empire on the N64, and Jedi Outcast on the PC. Rouge Squadron on the GC is nice. But for some reason, I tire of the games long before finishing. I would have put Outcast up there with Unreal Tournament, put that stupid leg sweep insta kill move killed my enthusiasm for that.
Now maybe it is just my age, and I no longer have the patience for adventure games (since I tend to stick to FPS), but SW games always seem to lack that little extra oomph IMO.
is the best thing since sliced bread. That's what really got me to abandon IE altogether (well that and the security issues). What I would like to see is a Graphical History, with the ability to track links you follow from searches.
For example, If I do a search for 802.11g router reviews, go to smallnetbuilder.com, then go to say Netgear and back then go to another generalized info site, the history would show from the google search which links I followed to info, as opposed to commercial sites, as opposed to junk. Hell, it doesn't even need to be graphical.
It could even prioritize by something like time spent there, or depth of links followed.
Knowledge in the form of an informational commodity indispensable to productive power is already, and will continue to be, a major-perhaps the major-stake in the worldwide competition for power. It is conceivable that the nation-states will one day fight for control of information, just as they battled in the past for control over territory, and afterwards for control over access to and exploitation of raw materials and cheap labor.
It turns out that vulcanism only accounts for about 50% of CO2 emissions in total at the moment.
Spock would never harm the earth, especially after he had to travel back in time to save it. Then again, those klingon engines could have emitted some serious CO2 in that trip.

All one has to do is a simple google to see that there are several anylysts who question this move.

12th line down 182 name over, seee see see, I made the paper! Not.
Microsoft's internal IT practices. of all of their software security/bug/virus problems, I'd say that they show up to play without any practice.
