One of the reasons I went with NIC.cx and got my .cx domain is that they don't publicize your personal information without you allowing it. (That policy has been changed now, don't bother.)

Also, when I found the exploit in MBNA's online credit card application system, it is precisely this information (I also own a .org and a .com domain) they used to contact me and threaten me in several ways.

OK, I took a few seconds to look it up. The movie was actually released in 1969, and was called "Colossus: The Forbin Project". It was about the U.S. and the Soviet Union both building virtually indestructible supercomputers that powered the defense system of each country. Eventually, the computers take over the planet and force (!) people to live in peace. You can see the Colossus logo pretty clearly on the bottom images on this page (caching courtesy of Lycos), and there's also the IMDB entry.

There was also a movie with a similar name that was filmed during the '70's (?) with a remarkably similar plot. Anyone remember watching Colossus?

BTW, I saw that movie again on Scifi a few weeks ago, and couldn't believe the resemblance of the Colossus logo and the AOL logo.

Yep, that's exactly what I said. I'll spend all the money on trainfare and/or rent, I'll burn out from the 13-hour work days (if you include travel), and I'll be left with pretty much nothing. The only reason I considered taking it for $60K is because I could then get something better half a year later. But half a year is a really long time...

What our democracy needs right now is a strong leader who isn't afraid to show our power in the world and to abolish the metric system altogether. Then we'll never have problems with the ballot system again.

Yeah, I'll definitely agree here. If you see a company pinching pennies like this over $50-100, don't expect them to be very generous in general. Given the money that they are probably making from your work, I doubt that $50 matters in the long run.

My own story: Some company in NYC offered me a job for PHP/MySQL/misc. programming. After pulling the price back and forth for a while, we ended up at $60K with some benefits, with them starting at 50, and me starting at 80; A compromise which definitely ended on their side of the line. I live in Philadelphia, so traveling is not really an option. I would have to relocate. I explained this difficulty to the recruiter. He offered to lend me $5K for moving expenses, which would then be deducted from my salary.

I'm not one to kill someone for a few dollars, but if a company declined to even offer me moving expenses, I doubt that they will be very kind in the future. For better or for worse, I declined.

Posted with a recent Mozilla nightly, BTW. Just get the UI bugs out, and I'll use it guys. :)

When I was 16 or 17, I pirated Photoshop. Do you know how much Photoshop costs? Do you think I would've ever bought it had I not been able to pirate it?

Having pirated Photoshop, I began using it. I got familiar with it. Then, I got pretty good with it. A company offers me a job as a graphics designer. What software do you think I will ask for? How likely do you think it is that the company will not pay for the Photoshop license?

(By the way, this is only an example. I couldn't do graphics design if you put a gun to my head.)

The boy scouts of america does not root out homosexuality. It simply does not allow openly homosexual members - a decision curently upheld by the Supreme Court.

This is ridiculous. Although I do not even agree with that policy, it didn't even fall under it. The guy was not openly professing homosexuality on campus. He was being perfectly "normal". What happened was that his picture was taken at a gay rights parade, and published in a newspaper. The BSA saw this photo, and fired him.

Today, I hear a lot of people complaining about gay pride parades and such, saying something along the lines of this: "I don't care what you do or like, just keep it to yourself!" This is wrong. Twenty or thirty years ago, this is exactly what was happening. People were just keeping it to themselves. No problem, right? No problem until someone finds out about it, cans your ass, and gets you blacklisted.

This is why the whole gay rights movement started. To get it into national attention and to get people to recognize that it is "normal" and that people shouldn't get fired or blacklisted over their sexual orientation.

(To save you some time: No, I'm not gay.)

Sure, there are still closed-minded people out there who believe that blacks are inferior by default. But demanding that a geek culture site dedicate itself to protecting minorities is simply absurd. If you feel this strongly about the issue, you should start your own website, minoritydot.org, and rant away.

This reminds me of my first two years of high school. I lived pretty far away and had to take two buses to school every day. However, the school only distributed free bus tokens to "minority" students. Black students living less than a mile away from the school received them for free, but I was forced to pay. Minority was determined strictly on a skin color basis, so students who were of different nationality but still white weren't considered minorities. (No, I'm not making this up.) Would you would consider that fair? White people used to treat black people unfairly, so now we must make up for all that unfairness by favoring black people over white people? If that isn't racism, I don't know what is.
