    The "unix wars" Sprung Forth the opensource movement, but it is actions of The Evil Empire which has made the public look for alternative. Now the Rebellion is gaining favor with the masses and not just Admins and Jedi Developers. If IBM had gained monopoly control of the PC OS market, we might be looking for alternative Internet Terminals rather than alternative OSes. People may like free stuff but business and the corporate sector are more suspicious.

    Oh the REAL world. How could I have forgot? I didn't say theat the open source movement was started, I said /motivated./ GNU, linux and Apache were insignificant, until after Microsoft. Minix still is. Linux would prbably have the same user base that Minix has now if it weren't for M$. Apache was run by a Christian group who prioritized religious evangicalism over Open source.

    There's actually a shred of wisdom in the poster's wit. If it weren't for a single company dominating PC software, there would be a lot less motivation to find an open source alternatives. Without Microsoft, the choice was (and probably still would be) between several crappy closed source software venders. It is because of MS's predatory and evil ways the Linux has become the alternative of choice. And maybe Bill will drown in all that free beer!

    "Other companies" structure themselves in many different ways. "Going public" does tend to raise the most money quickly, but a stock that doesn't plan to make any profit in the very near future isn't likely to get very far (especially in this economic climate) I would dismiss "just sell shares" comment as a common troll, if it weren't for the serious problems that kind of thinking has brought us in recent times.

    As someone writing from Cambridge MA, it seems to me that institutions of higher learning in the US have more in common with thier Canadian counterparts than any other public institution. I don't see any reason why this topic would be treated differently in Canada than in the US. Eh, hoser?

    They don't need to compete with the big boys. Via can just get the table scraps from PC market and be fine. Maybe they won't have longevity in the game console market, but many /.er seem to think they need to become the next Nintendo.

    The author should probably reread "Lisp: Good News, Bad News, and How to Win Big" IPv6 is probably not an engineer's wet dream, but I think it's probably the future. In the 80's Symbolics made these wonderful highly configurable workstations that used LISP as the assembler. Unfortunately, they cost about ten times as much as the new "Personal Computers" and needed highly trained, highly paid programmers. How many /.ers are reading this on a Lisp Machine?

    Its fine to talk about supercomputer "based on old 70's classification" But I think that was the last time the word had any meaning. What the heck is a "true" supercomputer? What ruling or "rulling" was changed? The word supercomputer should probably be buried next to "home computer" and "IBM clone." Supercomputers were what Cray made. Since then its just marketing jargon, especially when its from Apple.

    I's afraid your prediction will only apply to a wealthier minority. Particularly for Medicine: Until we get a Nationalized health system, there is virtually no way Standards would be put in place for digital exchange of medical information with PDAs. Maybe specific medical devices for specific conditions, but not PDAs. Perhaps wealthy baby boomers will receive benefits of the new PDA tech at the expense of everyone else. Most people will not be able to afford the hardware, software, or the training to use advanced PDA technology for quite a long time.

    Valdeez is a horrible example- it just brings up an image of masses dead birds. In the same article however, "Researched by Wyoming-based Western EcoSystems Technology, the report contends that many more birds are killed annually in collisions with vehicles (60 million), window panes (98 million) and communication towers (4 million) than die nationwide in wind turbines (10,000 to 40,000)" Now those numbers put things in perspective.

    Yeah, Walter Cronkite was spouting this kind of crap when his neighbors on Martha's Vineyard put him up to making a public statement. He then backtracked after a few meetings with people invovled with wind energy projects and recinded his statements on the news. Its relatively cheap and easy to make windmills bird-friendly. Of course the providers have to be pressured into actually doing something. If only the headline was "wind farm owners refuse to bird-proof" I'd be less likely to dismiss the story as FUD bilge

    It is even more curious that mainland Asian plant species tend to out-compete American local species, while the reverse doesn't happen. The isolation of Australia provides an eco-system obviously ripe for exploitation by introduced species, but its less clear why a plant like kudzu should be so difficult to manage on the American continents.

    There are many pests that might be erradicated this way. I wonder also, for fish in particular, assuming that one male can inseminate many females, could the reverse (female only reproduction) be used to temporarily increase numbers of predator species? Perhaps predators could be introduced into areas where genetic manipulation can not be done directly to the pest species?

    Mad Cow is transmitted by eating the brains of infected animals- in contrast to eating other parts of infected animals. Google "prions" Apparently, they are neither bacteriological nor viral. It seems prions may be active in soil, maybe even water? There's very little known about prions, but I think they remain active long after the brain tissue has decomposed.
