  1. I didn't think that much of Bush as president, and I think even less of Obama, but I have to admit both of them have done an excellent job with the US space program. We seem to have finally just about reversed a long decline and are set to branch out again.

  2. They must be missing a couple zeros. Thirteen thousand in a country of three hundred forty million? That's nothing.

  3. Once again proving income inequality is a purely political problem. It shouldn't come as a big surprise you'd much rather be poor in NYC, with its relatively robust safety net paid by wealthy people, than in some rural Appalachian town where everybody around you was also poor.

  4. If he refuses an order from any president he's out the door. In what job do you get to tell your boss to pound sand without consequences?

In any event, it's likely he'll be replaced by the next president as a matter of course along with the rest of the cabinet, so Brennan's assertion means exactly nothing unless Obamba orders him to use "enhanced interrogation".

Most things that are illegal are constitutional, so whether the ERA passed or not is immaterial.

You can provide different services to men and women if there's a basis for doing so (which is why dry cleaners charge more for a woman's blouse - it's more work for the dry cleaner). But you can't just refuse service based on sex unless it's a private club.

They might get away with it, but it's still illegal. I'd be surprised if they lasted three months before being sued out of business.

This is patently illegal in the US, though in this political climate they may get away with it.

  7. Nonsense. You're measuring third order effects. That's not evidence, particularly when the models seem to have almost zero predictive value.

  8. No, actually, that doesn't at all come close to describing global climate.

  9. You don't get to AGW from first principles. There's a lot of guesswork involved, and a lot of feedback loops. The problem is they come up with models and have no way to test them.

I loved both Fallout 3 and Fallout NV. Fallout 4? Eh... meh. I'm not really sure why, but it's just not as entertaining to me.

  12. Yeah, like I said. Actual, observational evidence? None. The models amount to not much more than speculation. Informed speculation, but speculation nonetheless.

  13. Oh, what was I thinking? You're right, of course. The entire world is just like a big glass box with CO2 in it. Case closed.

The blocking stuff really got out of hand on Twitter when they went to block lists. There are large groups of people on twitter who will never hear an opinion they disagree with because they subscribe to such block lists. Blocking trolls makes a certain amount of sense, but there are a lot of people who think anyone who disagrees with them is a troll, and these are the people who tend to maintain the lists.

It's more likely he's either trying to stamp out immoral behavior or he's trying to "clean up" the neighborhood to maintain the property value of his home.

Mary Jo White is, on the one hand, complaining that too many companies are eschewing an IPO. And on the other hand she's promising to put them through the ringer when they do.

You'd have to be crazy to go public now unless you have a shady business plan. Interest rates are near zero (well, below zero in some places, but you can't borrow at that rate). If you need money it makes far more sense to borrow for expansion and keep ownership of your company.

Instead they aim to please an imaginary anonymous ugly gelatinous blob of all the "investors" which aren't investors but mere stock holders, and said ugly gelatinous blob does not really care if the company exists next quarter, the only thing they want is their earnings at the end of this quarter.

This is grade-A bullshit. You know who "investors" are? They're people who've been slaving away in cubicles for 30 years putting money into their 401(k) plans hoping to spend a few years sleeping in before they die. Yes, they (meaning me) want good returns on their investments. Yes, stock holders are investors - why else would you buy a piece of a company?
