My Moto V500 plays standard MIDI files, downloaded straight from the Net. And I've seen other phones (Nokia, Sony Ericsson) that play MIDI files as well.
Of course, these phones are unbranded (no carrier specific) so I don't know if carriers actually disable this feature.
Maybe that's the same magic smoke that the Shuffle parts use in order to work, and maybe it's similar to the smoke that the parts of my last motherboard had, but it escaped once, so that motherboard doesn't work right now because the lack of that smoke.
This reminds me of the story of Van Halen putting a little clause in their concert contracts, stating that they demanded a bowl of M&Ms in backstage, but the brown ones would have to be removed. The presence of a single brown M&M in the bowl was enough to cancel the concert without any notice.
According to the band the reason for this clause was to assure that the contract had been read and understood and therefore, all technical specifications for stage conditions, power and so forth would be met.
Cochabamba, Bolivia; where water supply system was privatized and the Italian-American company that operated the system rised the rates to the point of most people not being able to afford water, then riots uprised and this led to the 'Water-war'. Martial Law was declared at the region and people died in the confrontations. The local governor had to resign and the company finally left the operations.
However, the corporation sued the goverment for 40 years of lost profits.
There was also a law passed that would give ownership for rain water, so the people couldn't even collect their own water without permission from the company. All your water are belong to us!
I think 'pro-capitalism' is more related to being 'pro-business' than being 'pro-competition'. Capitalism and free market aren't the same thing.
I think business (aka capitalist) are pro-competition about the things they have to pay (raw materials, services they use) but dislike competition in the product or service the business provides.
In the former case, I am being forced to show my private files to a stranger, just because some asshole thinks that If I have something to hide in MY computer then I'm a terrorist.
In Kazaa case, no one is forcing them to open their source code, it's just that if they don't do it, I won't install it on my computer. And because it's my computer, I will do with it what I damn please, as long as it doesn't interfere with the rights of other people.
I live in a tiny country in Central America. A "free -trade agreement" has been negotiated between the U.S. and five Central America countries plus Dominican Republic.
Because of geographical and political reasons, the United States of America has been the most important trade partner for these countries, so this agreement seems very important for the economic future of the region. Some people talk about the dangers of this treaty not being approbed, how many jobs will be lost and so forth. (Some of these concerns may be real, but some are FUD spread by the bussines which would get more benefits from this agreement)
Well, it just happens that this agreement has clauses that will require these countries to implement DMCA-like measures, like the outlaw of anti-circunvention devices for copyrighted materials.
Also, it will force the adoption of an US-like patent system, which will include software patents; and an extended protection time for pharma patents
It seems like to be eligible for the priviledge of "free trade" with the US, other countries will have to change their legislation to appeal more to the corporations that fund the U.S. goverment.
Then how do computer chips work? If they don't run on energy, what do they run on?
CPUs need energy, but energy itself can only convert into other forms of energy (heat in this case) or into matter (like in nuclear reactions). A processed instruction, just like the bits in the processor registers are neither energy nor matter, they're abstract entities that describe the electric state of transistors in the chip.
To be able to process and store these abstract entites you have to model them in a physical process (transistors shifting between conducting/not conducting states in a computer chip), that will require energy to work, of course.
I always found hard to find how much of that consumed power translates onto wasted power (heat dissipation)
Answer: 100%
From an energy perspective, the CPU only converts electricity into heat; it's not like a light bulb that converts x% of the power into light and y% into heat. Energy can't turn into processed instructions.
Now, if you want to know how power efficient is a processor, you'd have to obtain the MIPS-Watts or FLOPS-Watts ratio, and compare these numbers between CPUs.
Samsung announced a cell phone with TV tuner, but probably it will be disabled by Verizon request in order to force the consumers to buy content from Verizon Wireless.

Actually, "Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee" sounds much more like Ministry of Truth.

Dude, this is the best post I've seen on /. in days.
If I had mod points, they would be all yours.

Or egging@home, maybe?
Imagine... A distributed network of geeks donating spare CPU cycles to produce... Randomly Generated Numbers!
Who would have thought of it?

Are you going to boycott /. too?
I thought Silicon had nothing to do with Silicone.

The MS Office Ad in the article?
Because this bazaar thing was very messy, so we're going toward a more structured, cathedral-like model.

Not only better than the case from TFA, but also the most beautiful case I've seen!

I didn't know Beavis and Butthead worked for Microsoft.
Man, that sucks.
