hahahahahaha someone either lives with mommy and daddy or at a comfy subsudized univeristy. my rent alone is 600 a month. the cheapest place i could find would MAYBE maybe be 450$, and that would be living in a slum. then theres 30-50$ gas per week (gotta get to work somehow right?) car insurance (120$ month) food (good lord at least 150$ living on rice!) and what do you have? a shitty quality of life with no luxury items working 60 hours a week.

1. Windows autocalculates the subnet when you type in an IP. Ive never seen it guess wrong.
2. IPv6?? ROFL. thats just a lie. Ive never seen any PC that didnt have just one TCP/IP stack per interface ona default install.
3. typing the dots has no effect because MS assumes that you are typing the dots and moves the cursor to the next octet when a dot is typed.
4. start menu -> control pannel -> network connections -> MENU -> view -> details
5. When you click "use the following IP address" it doesnt let you obtain dns automatically. IT unghosted all the fields, not just some of them.
If you overcomplicate things and take all the worst possible scenarios it still doesnt take that long to figure out what the user sees on his screen. Perhaps you should be walking thru the menus with them on your local machine untill you aquire the skill to do it from memory?
of course on linux you can enter commands to change just about everything so that is, in your world, the easiest because i could just say ' ifconfig interface XXX add x.x.x.x netmask x.x.x.x ' or some such similar thing.

Well i work for a fair sized company i would say that a typical mywebsearch, comet cursor, 180solutions, screensaver inc, etc spyware infection takes about 20 minutes to disinfect.
Oh and the most important thing is to do it from SAFE MODE with network. I would recomend installing and running all those tools from safe mode. This includes downloading the updates. The only exception would be the microsoft one since it needs WMI to install which does not work in safemode.

Media Player Classic and a codec i downloaded a long time ago ( dBpowerAMP-codec-wmav9.exe )(dont know where i got it) plays WMV9 fine just fine. not 100% sure about videos, but i tried it with the election coverage last night from the cbc site and it worked great.

well you could not install those "features". Most driver cd/downloads have their drivers tucked in a directory some where. Especially true with driver updates you download from the manufacture's website. So yeah, you installed all that crap, you live with it. When i install an epson or an HP i just point add printer wizard at the driver dir. I have found very few peripherals to not have some kind of "manual install".
I would also add that the more expensive the hardware, the more likely it wont have badly coded drivers/software. This is why its better to buy quality peripherals rather than cheap "no name chinese company" stuff.

dont just spot discount things as people being stupid. Shaw.ca does this to me. I can download a file from any big website (Microsoft, adobe, macromedia, etc) at 7 MEG DOWN. thats 700 kps in firefox. I can download at 7 meg from my workplaces FTP server at a colo. a 10 meg file takes about 10 seconds to download. I run BT 24/7. I have never seen it climb more than 20kps . most of the time it hovers around 4 kps.
I have a linux router. I run my own DNS (before that it would randomly drop me like grand parent). I can play any game with no lag, no packetloss download huge files but BT maxes out at 4-20 kps.

Disagree. AMD has had the lead since it first came out with its athlon XP line. Maybe not in "mindshare" but in terms of actual cost/performance. Athlon XP's totally schooled the P4. I know because thats the time i switched from intel fanboy to amd. After buying a 1.4ghz P4, and then goign to a LAN party and seeing it get schooled in basically every area (app start up time, fps, etc). Not only that, some higher end P3's were also on par with some of the early p4s! They just kept upping the MHZ and that was basically it.
I baught an XP chip around that time and havent looked back. Not to mention that it cost twice as much for an intel system (rambus). Have you noticed that most intel systems these days take ddr ram? see intel has been making bad decisions for a while. hopefully this will make them turn around a bit.

Perhaps it has never occured to you that artists who make works soley for profit are the reason we dont have more great works out there. see there used to be this idea of making art for art's sake, not for profit. i would happily never watch another 70% CG hollywood crap fest if it meant that there were more "Starving artist" movies that were distributed on the net to express some real emotion and deep thought.

well you could not install those "features". Most driver cd/downloads have their drivers tucked in a directory some where. Especially true with driver updates you download from the manufacture's website. So yeah, you installed all that crap, you live with it. When i install an epson or an HP i just point add printer wizard at the driver dir. I have found very few peripherals to not have some kind of "manual install".
I would also add that the more expensive the hardware, the more likely it wont have badly coded drivers/software. This is why its better to buy quality peripherals rather than cheap "no name chinese company" stuff.

Some people in this thread are very close minded. I especially like how the parents of children get so happy when their kids are diagnosed. last month my totals were 40.9gb down 33.9gb up. This was mostly comprised of pr0n, feature films, tv shows and warez. It should also be noted that i can barely afford my rent and do not have a TV.

It basically describes in detail, how the US govt linked al qaeda (sp?) and osama when they had NO PREVIOUS RELATIONSHIP before 9/11. dont just spot discount things as people being stupid. Shaw.ca does this to me. I can download a file from any big website (Microsoft, adobe, macromedia, etc) at 7 MEG DOWN. thats 700 kps in firefox. I can download at 7 meg from my workplaces FTP server at a colo. a 10 meg file takes about 10 seconds to download. I run BT 24/7. I have never seen it climb more than 20kps . most of the time it hovers around 4 kps.
I have a linux router. I run my own DNS (before that it would randomly drop me like grand parent). I can play any game with no lag, no packetloss download huge files but BT maxes out at 4-20 kps.

Disagree. AMD has had the lead since it first came out with its athlon XP line. Maybe not in "mindshare" but in terms of actual cost/performance. Athlon XP's totally schooled the P4. I know because thats the time i switched from intel fanboy to amd. After buying a 1.4ghz P4, and then goign to a LAN party and seeing it get schooled in basically every area (app start up time, fps, etc). Not only that, some higher end P3's were also on par with some of the early p4s! They just kept upping the MHZ and that was basically it.
I baught an XP chip around that time and havent looked back. Not to mention that it cost twice as much for an intel system (rambus). Have you noticed that most intel systems these days take ddr ram? see intel has been making bad decisions for a while. hopefully this will make them turn around a bit.

Because the enthusiast market and the server market drives mindshare. Who do you ask to make your purchasing decisions when you buy a car? You friend who knows alot abotu cars! Same with computers. Once more and more PC enthusiasts, technicians and people "in the know" start chanting AMD, the masses will follow. As long as they keep the price low, even lusers who buy their PCs from futureshop will buy amd's because they dont really care and base most decisions on prices.
As an asside, i recently had the oportunity to make a purchasing decision at my company. I recomended AMD's for the executives machines. When they were installed (they had p4 3.2s before switched them to AMD 64 3200s) they were very impressed with the speed of their apps. The CEO even personally made the effort to call me and tell me that his PC was running "awesome" now.
Hows that for mindshare.
