  1. Re:Old POS system on Decode Your Barcode, Get Your Personal Info · · Score: 4, Informative

I used to work for a POS Helpdesk for an *unnamed* gas station/c-store. We could always dig through the log files to read what sort of input was recorded from a cardswipe on a CC#. There are actually several (usually 2 readable) tracks on your average CC.

The data on the MS of your major CCs are usually <15-16 digits - ala your CC #>=<exp date>

  2. My previous employer experience with dbs. . . on Simple Database Interfaces for Unix? · · Score: 1

The company I had previously worked for, we did a fair amount of "easy and basic" database manipulation. We had used the Informix db on our servers at our various sites, and it had a very easy to use text-based (possibly curses, is my guess) front-end. I don't remember the front-end having any other names, and I don't personally use informix, so I don't know if the front-end ships standard with informix or not?

I can't say the front-end was the most powerful thing in the world, but for our needs, it got everything done for us. . . After doing a little snooping around with it, it seems like it has a lot of functions that any basic - mid level user would need in order to manipulate a database.

  3. Same 'Ol Story on Ripoff 101: Gouging Students for Textbooks · · Score: 1

This has been going on for years, and I bet if every college/university had an online newspaper publication you could find hundreds of related stories to this.

The story, as it goes with me -- personal experience -- If I ever drop a class, early in the semester after buying a book, I can rarely sell it back to my bookstore, due to a couple possible problems but most commonly they already have too many books of the same title in their used section. It is cool that many university bookstores often have a buy-back or a used section, but that generally only helps when you buy the book. You have a little bit of a chance to sell your book back, but not very likely.

You also always have to deal with the situation of when your professor changes books from semester to semester, and the only books available are brand new books, as opposed to 2 year old books (a good majority of classes/books will allow for well over 2 years, before any major changes take place that an old book can handle).

There is a student organization that is put together where you can actually barter/trade/sell/buy or whatever books you have with other students. This is probably the best idea that anyone has come up with as far as books go at my University.

He usually estimates the cost of employees as wages + 30-35%. I think these are realistic numbers for a professional company.
