    This is a great example of the science that can be performed with unmanned probes. Too bad we are wasting most of our space research money on keeping a few humans alive in low-earth orbit.

    Interesting. I have no trouble decommissioning my drives with a 9mm. The round goes right through the aluminum chassis and the platters.

    Let me clue you in. There really is no scientific research on the ISS. All of NASA's research is done by robots or unmanned probes. The manned space program is simply the advertising department for NASA.

    At work I bought some 2mm copper plates. They came with an MSDS (material safety data sheet - required for chemicals in the US) that said: "Warning! There are no known hazards associated with this material."

    Can a GR expert please explain to me why black holes can't have a magnetic field? This isn't immediately obvious to me. If I weren't so lazy I'd read about the 'No Hair' theorem in MTW, but this is slashdot afterall. I'm a physicist (experimental nuclear), so you don't have to simplify too much.

    The laws of thermodynamics only say that you can't convert heat into mechanical energy with perfect efficiency. It really doesn't say anything about converting between others forms. For example, a pendulum without friction (frictionless isn't forbidden by thermodynamics and can be achieved in some cases) would oscillate forever, converting gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy and back with 100% efficiency.

    I understand he has been involved in unmanned space flight programs. Maybe he cn bring some sanity to NASA and we can stop wasting huge sums just to have humans barely survive 30 miles from earth and do real science with robots on the (relative) cheap. The only reason to send humans to mars or anywhere else in space is bragging rights. There is -NO- science value.

    Earthlink is also reasonably Linux friendly. In the last 5 years I've had 2 problems. (One was switching to broadband, the local telco didn't set it up even though they said they had.) As soon as I told them I'm running Linux, they transferred me to someone with an honest-to-god clue.
