all political musical humour is bottom of the barrel

I think that political humor like this is not only funny, but a invaluable to keep our society going. It is so easy to get overly paranoid about an election ("Bush is going to win and kill us all" or "Kerry is going to win and kill us all").
It is dangerous to become overly involved emotionally when it comes to politics. That is the kind of thing that got Spain into its bloody civil war.
Political humor like this it a good way to take a step back and realize that after this election, no matter who wins, the US will still exist. There have been countless close, polarized elections like this in the past and the US has faced much larger problems, and we are still here.
Making light of a situation helps us put things in perspective sometimes.

  5. Losing data from scratches on Movie Playback From 1TB Holographic Disc · · Score: 1

I guess this means that these new discs would be even more sensitive to scratches.
What they should do is put the discs in a small case with a protecting flap that the player slides open to read.
Just like a floppy, where the data was stored on the magnetic disc on the inside of the case and was protected by the sliding thing. They really should have started doing this with dvds, but for this, it is almost mandatory.

There were some other Woody Guthrie songs remade recently too. I think the story is that these were unreleased songs of his that he had not written music to, so Woody's daughter hired Billy Bragg and Wilco to put music to them and sing them.
They are called Mermaid Avenue (samples, review) and Mermaid Avenue Volume II (samples, review)
They are both pretty good cds, especially volume 1.
I wonder what the copyright implications were one these, since they were unreleased. Does anyone know? Also, what was his daughter's opinion about the jibjab song?

Vast expansion of secret police powers via "Patriot Act".

Come on. You may think that the Patriot act gives to many powers to the government, and thats fine. But "secret police powers"?? And "vast expansion" of them? Thats a little to sensationalistic.
World's biggest Military budget (thats a guess) and a military commander chosen in hail of controversy.

Yes, that may be true, but are you worried that the US is going to take over your country? We didn't even take Iraq as our own. I think that its a good thing that countries like US, England, France, Germany, Japan, etc maintain a strong military to fight against any dictators that try to amass armies to get rid of democracies. Chosen in a hail of controversy? I don't know what you mean exactly, but I guess you are referring to Gore's recount request. The votes got recounted, and Bush still won.

I don't understand the hate that is beginning to be perpetuated against the US. The US has made some mistakes (like the intellegence about Iraq), and so we jumped the gun with Iraq. But why would that cause Europe to HATE us? If you look at it, we should NEVER have gone in there, but it is not the worst thing in the world. Saddam is gone, and now the Iraqis have freedom (at least relatively). And they are even kicking ass in soccer! (interesting and funny sidenote).
I really think that it is important that we do not divide ourselves over what really amounts to politics.
You disagree with the way the US runs it domestic and foriegn policy: ok, good.
You think that the US would be best run by someone like maybe Nader: ok, thats interesting.
But you hate the US and arrogant Bush loving Americans: not cool.

I agree. Not only does this book seem like a lame attempt for a guy to make a buck off of 1984 and Brave New World's fame, but the author should understand that its time to maybe express a little more hope. Of course, the guy has his right to "artistic expression," but I would more liken this to trying to sell some paperbacks to a hip teenage crowd.
If these kids want to read something good, try going to the two giants of this genre, 1984 and Brave New World. People so often read these kinds of books and then talk about how "1984ish" our world is today or how we are heading towards a "Brave New World." I wonder how many people who make those comments have even read the books.
In those books, the authors developed their own ideas, rather than the most common pop culture idea among teenagers ("OMG!!! Corporations are going to destroy the world!!!").
    Boo.

But thats the thing... I don't know you. And neither does that company. What they should really do is hire you to create a good website under their supervision, to make sure that you are not stealing customer information.
But thats their decision (even if it is poorly made).
The problem is that there are dumb people out there (the majority) who don't look at the address and struggle so much with the web that they don't take the time to look at "details" like "this is not the official site". To put it this way, there have definitely been people who used your site thinking it was run by Odeon. And to be doing something like collecting customer information in their name (even if its not intentional on your part) is something that they need to worry about.
The company does not know what your intentions are or what you are doing with the data. You seem honest, but the sad truth is that there are alot of scumbags out there who would love a couple million email addresses to sell to porno sites.

Sure, their site should work in other browsers, but that is not the issue.
The issue is that some guy is tricking people into submitting info to his site instead of the Odeon site like they think that they are. Maybe he collects the data before he sends it to Odeon, maybe he doesn't like he says. I don't know him, and thats not even the issue.
I can very well understand why a company does not want someone they don't know collecting their customers information in their name. What if they guy ends up getting caught selling all these names to spammers one day? Then Odeon would really look stupid for not taking action against the guy.
