Considering that iTunes has a huge market share in legal music downloading, I think that it's safe to say that the reason that cd sales are declining is because you no longer have to buy an entire CD when all that you want it 1 song. I (for one) will never buy an entire CD again unless I'm really into the artist and I actually want the entire CD. From now on I'll be buying my music on iTunes only.
Your post is "insightfull" for a number of reasons but mostly it's a testament to the power of Apple marketing.
Actually I think it's more of a testament to the lack of power in Microsoft's advertising. They're very bland in terms of public image. They don't look like Media giants. They look like a boring software company that cranks out the ideas of others and makes a profit. They don't care much about their public image (at least it doesn't appear that they do).
Really? Hmm, well... I see half the net switching over to the MS store, like almost everything else MS makes.
I'm not sure that this is necessarily true. The world uses Windows because that's what they've always used. The world uses MS Office because that's what they've always used. I don't think the general public views MS's products as good, I just think that they really believe that that's their only option. It's different with the music store business. Microsoft wasn't the first software developer to have an online music store this time so people have been made aware that there are other options.
Just my $0.02
Funny. When I think of what Microsoft's online music store would be like,
I picture an extremely limited selection of music which consists of artists
like Barry Manilow, America and William Shatner. I also picture most of the
album art work being unavailable and replaced with a "No Picture Available"
graphic that appears broken most of the time. Microsoft is so second rate.
Picture a group of old ladies wearing sun visors trying to sell modern hand bags
to teen age girls. It's just not going to happen.
Actually, I bet Microsoft is building in a virus scanner so your (previous) virus scanner won't go off every time one of it's many security holes is exploited. Good thinking. Because your virus scanner didn't pickup the virus, you don't have one!!!! Yipee!
Maybe Apple has some fine print in their iTunes Artist Agreement that states that if an artist places his song(s) on iTunes that apple will be able to use them in any manner that they wish. That would be smart if they did that.
I can't believe Chiat Day failed to clear the use of these songs with Pink, Mariah Carey, and The Who... or whatever major label actually owns the rights.
Well, from the sound of Eminem's going rate ($10million plus) it might be cheaper to just use the songs and then pay a smaller settlement fee. Just maybe...
There's something that people are missing about the PowerMac G5. They didn't just put a faster processor in the machine and release it, they totally redesigned everything in the computer. For the x86 world to catch up there are going to have to be some changes.
Actually, I already use Linux and Free BSD at work, and like me, my bosses don't put nerd pride above common sense. OS X is better because they've spent the time on making it easy to use. Once someone spends that same time on any of the Open Source OSes then they can be considered good. But until then it doesn't matter how powerful they are if only select people know how to use it. They aren't hard to use, but it doesn't make any sense to spend time learning an OS if there's one that's just as good (if not better) that's much easier to use.
And even though PurdueGraphicsMan would feel guilty, I would not, knowing that my research could go even faster than before.
Actually, that somewhat dorky statement about feeling guilty was relentlessly added into my post as though I said it. I would never say something that dorky.
Could cable and DSL face a new competitor in the broadband market in the near future?
Has there been any information released about the potential costs to the consumers for this
service? I haven't heard anything other than Earthlink's $39.95/month (which isn't much cheaper
than what I currently pay for cable). The only way cable and DSL will face any competition from
BPL is if BPL is cheaper. Why pay for BPL if it's not cheaper or at least offers more bandwidth
for the same price as cable or DSL?
One obvious consideration is the fact that Napster's name isn't exactly crystal clear in the public's eye. With all of the lawsuit stuff they went through back in the day, the name Napster has a lot of negative baggage with it. That alone would be enough to keep me from dealing with them.
Since when is a 20mm sheet of glass enough to protect someone? The last I knew people had figured out how to bust through glass. I could be wrong though.
Repist breaks down in tears: "WHY GOD! WHY GLASS! OH THE AGONY!!!!"
A woman walks slowly through a mostly-empty parking garage to her car. Suddenly she feels as if someone is watching her. She starts walking more quickly but suddenly she hears a seond set of footsteps. Her heart beats quickly as she gets closer to her car. 70 feet - 60 feet - 50 feet... She looks behind her to see a man in a black ski mask walking towards her. She knows she's in trouble. She breaks into a sprint.Just as she reaches her car and gets in the man makes starts running also. She goes to turn the key...

What about the fact that it's not good to use radically different tunings on one guitar? It's horrible for the integrity of the neck and the headstock. Not to mention the contraption is hella-ugly and totally detracts from the inherent sexiness of the guitar.
"It's simple, there are 2 levels of the Matrix, Duh! The blue Matrix, their 'Real World', is just another Matrix. You watch. In the third one, you'll see the REAL real world. It's so transparent. Hollywood sucks."
Okay, now I'm mad. I haven't yet seen this movie because I'm waiting for it to go into the cheaper theaters that I can afford. It would be NICE if you people would somehow notate that you're going to give SPOILERS!!!!!
Now, the first thing I thought of when I heard this was Racing Simulation. If he could find an open field and put in his favorite racing sim he could actually drive his car around and use his steering wheel as the controller. That would be sweet. Of course you'd want to have a stationary mode as well. It'd probably be better than most of the force feedback wheels.
There's a mission statement for the Open Source movement in there somewhere. Very nice.

Sorry, but any day that there's a battle between Eminem and Apple, I'll choose Apple.
Actually, I was trying to be sarcastic. I forgot. This is Slashdot...
I'm running a 1Ghz G4 ("Wind Tunnel") :-D

If they were they'd be Apple, not Intel. Duh!

Why spend the time learning an inferior OS when you can open one right out of the box and use it without learning? Sounds like nerd drivel to me.
Again I'd like to point out that I didn't make that statement. Pudge graciously added it to my post... :)
