Even if the refresh rate isn't high enough for video (I didn't RTFA) it would be perfect for low-cost, huge picture frames and even computerized wallpaper, etc.
I can already see things like "Star Trek wallpaper" being available on torrents, makes your walls appear like the NCC-1701D (or whatever the number was), or maybe you feel paranoid, then put Aliens wallpaper up, etc...
It's more the fact that FF XI seems to keep the DVD drive active no matter what the game is doing (at least on Windows and Xbox 360), I've never seen FF XI on the PS2.
Well, if you take into account that I'm playing on a 4:3 36" CRT in 480p, I don't know if I'd see much of a difference given the upsampling of the PS3. All I know is that FF XI keeps the DVD drive active and my Xbox 360 sounds like a jet about to take off. I know it's mainly the DVD drive, but still, it sucks - I'm used to the silence of my Mac mini.
Well, the Wii has a USB port, but okay since the Wii has ethernet and Wi-Fi support, let's talk about networked drives. I'd like to see that. But that type of network? Filesystem?
As for my DS, well, Opera DS doesn't support flash, so no videos. And my Play-Yan micro requires MPEG-4/AAC in 352x240 or lower, on a SD card.:p
Just release Metroid Prime 3 (when it's ready) and I'll be happy. I rarely ever buy a Nintendo console for anything else than Zelda and Metroid. All other games are just bonuses.
Now if only they'd add MPEG-4 video support (H.264, even) along with external USB drives, people could use their Wii as a media system as well. Rip DVDs to 500GB USB drive and you got a DVD library on your TV with the help of the Wii.
If that includes people with silver accounts, let's not kid ourselves...
I, for one, only have a silver account so I can play Final Fantasy XI. It requires an Xbox Live account for some reason even though Square has their own servers for FF XI. There's no such external account required for the Windows and Playstation 2 versions.
It's not a black OR white question. You are paying for both: the data rights (license/development costs/etc) and the media (manufacturing costs of the disc, box, shipping, etc).
The question is, why can't we get replacement media for free/very cheap?
If they are going to make FPSes on consoles, there needs to be a keyboard and mouse adapter, I'm tired of trying to play games like this with a controller.
Why is why I'm so looking forward to Metroid Prime 3. Granted it's a Quest+FPS game, but at least moving around and shooting stuff will be much easier thanks to the Wii-mote and nunchuck.
The release of the latest version of Metal Gear Solid series is expected to help lure hard-core gamers to the PS3 and alleviate concerns over scarcity of strong PS3 titles.
Oh yeah. Because we all know, of course, that:
x PS3 titles = scarcity of strong PS3 titles x+1 PS3 titles = alleviate concerns over scarcity of strong PS3 titles
Not to mention that MGS are not exactly games that appeal to everyone.
Well, if that's what you think then this isn't about "portable Wikipedia", it's just a regular portable device that happens to have internet access. I can do that on my Nintendo DS.
The parent was talking about the idea of compressing Wikipedia so you can access it on a portable device (via a 4GB SD card, etc).
At this moment without compression you could probably store enough text on a mobile phone to keep you constantly reading for a month.
That may be, however we're talking about Wikipedia here. It's not about storing so much text that you can't go through it within a month, it's about storing everything so that you can access it as a reference.
When you look up a word in the dictionary, it takes from 10 to 30 seconds to read the definition. But you did need the whole book/brick to do it.
Agreed. The whole reason I switched to Mac (from Windows) is because OS X has a unix core and Apple now uses standards where possible. As examples, screenshots are saved as PNGs, I can open PDFs without Acrobat Reader and "print" directly to a PDF file.
I was talking about "action shots" in general, nothing specific about this movie. Sometimes the action shots are so close that all we can see is a huge full-screen blur.
Then there's the camera shot length. If you keep switching the point of view around, make it last at least 3 or 4 seconds so we actually know what we're looking at, and from where.
The only major complaint was that a lot of the action scenes (especially in the beginning) were not comprehensible. The camera would focus too far in and move around a lot, and it was difficult to tell who was fighting and what was going on.
That's a major problem in a lot of recent movies. It's like some idiot in Hollywood is teaching that "if 95% of the screen moves, people will think it is more actionny."
And yes I made up the word actionny. We're talking about Hollywood here.

You should have said "Does anyone need more evidence to abandon Microsoft?".

This 60GB PS3 will be the last available model in north america with the PS2 compatibility 100% in hardware, no software emulation?
Anyone playing FF XI on a PS3? Any screenshots comparison with the Xbox 360 version?

The costs also don't cover a single thing. Let's say a game costs 50$. Maybe 45$ is for the license/etc, the other 5$ is for the media.
You should have the right to get a replacement disc for 5$ since the license/etc is already paid for.

We're talking about Wikipedia access for devices with no internet access (or else they'd use the regular wikipedia website).
And nothing would prevent you to download an up-to-date version when you have internet access.
x PS3 titles = scarcity of strong PS3 titles

No problem. If people can't figure that out from the URL (banshee-project.org) then they shouldn't be on slashdot in the first place.
From the picture that thing looks half as big as a mid-tower. That's not what I'd call a "small PC".
When I think small computer, I think Apple Mac mini and AOpen miniPC.

En fait ça devrait être "Le Canada a de très bons règlements de travail".
You could also combine that idea with a social study by actually calling your pills "Placebo" (or something that sounds like it).
That's a great idea! I'll also invest all my money into SUB... erm.
MOV... no...
SHR... that's not it either...
ah, now I remember! NOP medicines.
