I've been running Slack since 9.0 was released, and have loved it ever since, in fact i'm typing on my slack machine now...
It is incredibly versitile...vanilla install for a server, and dropline gnome is an EXTREMELY polished desktop.
For managing a server farm or some such mass of computers, which i have no experience with mind you, would seem easy with simple config file migrations. And BSD style init scripts are so much simpler!
I had a teacher in high school who had similar habits, albiet she leaned to the far left. This kind of reinforcement of opinion is sickening, and even if i did agree with it, I would disagree with the presentation of it as fact.
Our educational system needs change in this respect.
(OFFTOPIC) Speaking of yfoo...didn't someone propose a new alternative to the X Windowing System called Y about a year back? i guess that didn't go anywhere...
As a college student, i disagree. I take my laptop to class, and thank god i have no goddamn widescreen or dual optical drives or anything like that. The battery life and footprint are bad enough as it is.
I want a notebook that's fast, CPU-wise, video-wise, and I/O-wise, has a top-notch display (my current is 15", 1600x1200), and silent. And I'm sure I'm not the only one in this boat.
and gets a whopping 45 minutes of battery life!!!
anyway, on my current laptop, i've got a 14 inch screen, no (internal) optical drive, and i run at 1ghz and I STILL can't watch a full length movie on the thing without plugging it in. That's what i'm talking about.
For now...however the small-and-light market is waning as the laptop and desktop collide. All i was saying is that it should be preserved, and advancements should be made in this field. The only companies i can think of off the top of my head that sacrifice power for more portability are Sharp, Fujitsu, and maybe Apple. I just hope that this market doesn't disappear completely, or become so niche that the prices skyrocket (more likely).
We constantly hear about computer manufacturers "closing the gap" between laptops and desktops. this will never happen. At least for me, the two serve completely different purposes. My desktop is the workhorse, does all the compiling for both computers (both run linux), and is my general use machine. My laptop is low powered, and only used for work on the road. Last time i shopped for a laptop, most models were trying to do everything and more, while i just want a cheap laptop, no glitz except maybe wireless, with a long battery life. That's it. No 4 ghz 512 mgs ram monsters. I don't need 64 Bit processing. Keep it simple stupid.
Not nessesarily. I solely run linux and own legit copies of several games, including UT2004 and Neverwinter nights. It's not that we don't want to pay to play games, it's just that we seldom get the oppurtunity to.
Why would they get sued? the ipod already plays non-drm Mp3 and WMA, am i wrong? are the makers of the Neuros or the Archos sued? this doesn't make any sense...
Their solution to this is that the pressure reqired to activate the touch screen is above that which resting your hand requires. Although it can be activated by any object, it takes quite a lot of force unless you use something pointy like a stylus. I have no problem resting my hand while writing on it.
not much. It's good for curling up on the couch and surfing the web, or maybe industry type stuff where you're walking and computing, but for everyday normal use a laptop is much more useful.
elementcomputer.com sells a convertible tablet running a custom Xandros linux. The distrobution doesn't come with kernel sources, and there are many limitations on the software side. Also, touchscreen calibration as a severe pain in the ass. As an early adopter, i can deal with these limitations, but it is DEFINATELY not ready for the mainstream.
"Kill teh Wabbit Kill Teh Wabbit" - E. Fudd
Ah, The Classics
Despite your musical taste, rap is still generally considered music. I never went so far as to listen to it, by the way.
I think he means his purchasing decision was based on the fansub, not the actual DVD.
No. That doesn't make sense.
Anime are cartoons.
Bugs bunny is also featured in cartoons.
Opera is music
Rap is music
You see where i'm going here?

Then we'll need .torrents for the .torrents...
Agreed. Penn state blocked Bittorrent, but not FTP. Go figure. Friggin Pirates. Anyway, Someone reply with a mirror!

Luckily, the market caters to both types of use.

The link in your sig is as funny as it is blasphemous. Good show.
ok fine. Print to file in cups, then use ps2pdf.
Don't promote software piracy. Many people make a good living and feed their families with sold software.
Plus, how can we possibly enforce open liscenses when we can't follow closed ones?
and a good suggestion of that third party tool would be PDFcreator. Google it, you'll be satisfied, it's free and open.
wow. you win. just...wow.

As a college student working at a help desk, i can inform you that many of our student's PCs were mucked up by Service pack 2, released this year
i believe Microsoft released a new set-top thingy this year as well.
then use the unix lpd to print with scripts.
