It isn't as though Hanoi Jane caused harm on the people that most blame for the Vietnam war... she harmed our soldiers, that is the crime of what she did.

the nation we were defending at the time was a right wing military dictatorship that was as anti-freedom as you can get

Blow things out of proportion much?

For one thing, both Johnson and Kennedy were Democrats. The war started and continued with them in office. The right wing you loathe, in Nixon's presidency, ended the war and even reduced tensions with USSR and China.

As for dictatorship, as far as I know, three presidents were elected by the people during that war. While there were atrocities committed by certain parts of the government (such as the national guard at Kent), it was not some sort of conspiracy to end free speech, as you can plainly see with all the huge, relatively peaceful anti-war protests that were carried out in America by free Americans.

We are talking about Hanoi Jane and the treason she committed in the Vietnam war. As was just pointed out to me, you do not even have to be officially at war with a country for it to count as treason, as per the Constitution.

What she did was flat out disgusting.

The political right in the U.S. hates her guts.

Ummm, no, more than just the political right hate her guts. Anyone ever associated with the military hates her guts. Any (informed) patriotic American probably hates her guts.

You see, she did not just "make a trip" to N. Vietnam. She ENCOURAGED them to shoot down Americans. She visited an anti-aircraft battery that was used to shoot at/down American planes. She encouraged the enemy to continue fighting, and encouraged the Americans (over the radio) to essentially "give up." She even asked to pose in videos with American POW's, and some of those POW's later testified that they were tortured if they did not want to appear in the videos with her. Like a previous poster said, if war had been officially declared, she could have been executed for treason. As it stands, most people who know all the facts consider her a traitor to this day.

This is why any photo showing Kerry at an anti-war rally with her is extremely damaging to his campaign. This is also why Jane Fonda has been trying to distance herself from him in recent interviews, because she knows she is so hated it could torpedo the Dem's campaign.

In this case, MS isn't providing a more useful virus scanner or a better product.

I could easily argue that an operating system that has virus scanning built into it is insanely useful, but are you saying these are the only tests? What about ADDED VALUE?

Microsoft should be severely punished since it violated laws to acquire its monopoly in the OS world. However, they were not severely punished. Therefore they should be permitted to improve their products as any other dominant company may do.

I used to bitch about their inclusion of MSIE and how it was essentially game over for competing browsers. But the market is proving me wrong -- look at the success of Mozilla. It is a viable choice in the market, and has exerted market forces to cause Microsoft to improve their product or face more customer erosion (witness the upcoming addition of popup blocking and other ideas taken from 3rd-party browsers).

There is definitely value added by Microsoft including certain things in the operating system. Where do you draw the line?

One of the most popular file formats on earth is PKZIP. For the longest time, PKZIP had the most market share, and then WinZip has held it for a long time. But Microsoft added "Zip Folder" support in XP, and it MAKES PERFECT SENSE. Why should I pay extra and have to download WinZip every time I install a new version of Windows? The OS should be able to open common file formats for the sake of usability. AND the way Microsoft implemented it is easier to use than WinZip -- .zip files are just folders. Not an original idea, I am sure, but it makes sense for this to be included.

It makes sense for an operating system to come with features to keep it secure. Are the same people that bitch about the Windows viruses plaguing the same as those bitching about Microsoft including A/V features in the upgrade? I sure hope not. This is a logical step, one that should have been taken way back with Windows 98.

whereas other vendors are forced to blow millions on sales and marketing and trying to entice consumers to download and install their product

Those other vendors haven't spent the BILLIONS on R&D, marketing, and sales that Microsoft has spent building Windows into that "underlying platform" that you refer to. Where would these competing software vendors be without Microsoft in the first place? If they want to continue to be successful, they should improve their products.

Microsoft should have been punished and broken apart for breaking the law to build it's monopoly. But it wasn't -- that was the government's fault. And so now it will compete as though it is your standard monopoly -- something which is NOT illegal in its own right.

If you are paying by credit card in the USA, the provider can require that you provide an accurate address or your credit card transaction will be declined. The credit card processors offer AVS (Address Verification System) to do this. You could fake the street name I suppose, but the street number and zipcode would have to match if they chose to go this route.

Another alternative is to mail you the information required to complete your VoIP account registration, and if you give a fake address you won't receive it...

The war is over with small skirmishes still being fought to retain the peace, mostly against terrorists, not enemies of war. So far the most notable result has been far from "making things worse for our citizens and the rest of the world": we have captured Saddam Hussein and most of his major henchmen, and we've pressured Libya into ending it's quest for WMD... and the war was only started about 11 months ago!

Kill the electoral college (yes I've heard all the lame arguments in favor of it), institute a better voting system that allows you to vote for multiple people, ranking them from highest to lowest (or even approval voting).

Because the real problem we're facing is the idea that not voting for one of the two parties is throwing your vote away. However, the two party system in place is never going to overthrow the system that allows them to maintain control.
