  1. I dissent. on Supreme Court Rules against Grokster · · Score: 1
In response to the Supremem Court Decision, I respectfully dissent.

First of all - knowing the public uses the software illegally, in general, does not mean that Grokster knows WHO uses it specifically. The reason this is important is because this ruling will eliminate legal uses arbitrarily to stop illegal use.

Essentially, to use a metaphor here, the ruling prevents car manufacturers to sell cars in order to prevent common illegal activities done with cars (speeding).

There is a difference between general illegal use, and specific. In other words, if Toyata sells you a car knowing that you plan to run someone over with it, they can be liable. But, they cannot be liable by selling cars knowing that someoen out there will use it to run someone else over. ie - you cannot outlaw something to prevent a fairly common, albeit unpredectable action.

I've always hypothesized about a method of beating the lie detector test... And it employs telling the truth. Hypothetically speaking, let's say you stole a diamond ring and are being interrogated about it on the lie detector. You are asked: 1) Did you steal a diamond ring? (you want to lie, obviously, and say no. You also happen to be wearing a white shirt). So inside your head you ask yourself, "Am I wearing a black shirt?" 2) Then you answer "No." but in response to your own question to yourself, thus telling the truth. And the the lie detector test you've answered the question regarding the diamond. Perhaps speed can be a limiting factor, but you can probably come up with two quick and easy questions to ask yourself.

  22. Apples & Oranges on Best Tools for Machinima? · · Score: -1

To say that 'age of movies is waning' is naive.

Comparing movies to games in gross sales is overly unfair, and I have noticed of late it has become a common practice. A movie is seen once (per perchase) and that's that; hence the cost of a movie ticket is usually 7 times less than the cost of a video game (which, after purchase is played many times...generally). Consequently, the amount of people required to achieve $100mil in sales for a video game is 7 times less than the amount required for a featured film. Not to mention, the turnover for movies, at least major ones, is higher than that of major games; big blockbusters vs. say, Doom, Halo, or HalfLife franchise. So when a game like Halo2 comes out, each game would proportionally make more sales than each movie.... low turnover increases the concentration of fans higher for games than for movies. The point is; just because games can rake in more money than movies doesn't mean that they are more popular or in greater demand. If games overtake car sales, it won't mean that cars' sales have started to 'wane'.
