  1. Re:OS X Native Development Pointless on Best Developer Tools for OS X · · Score: 4, Insightful

One can run Linux alongside Windows on the same hardware. Why, then, has Linux application development not shrivelled up? Why are there native Linux applications? Perhaps it's because if a user has chosen an 'alternate platform' such as OS X or Linux, they're not going to be very happy about having to run Windows too; dual-booting is never as pleasant as running a native app, and perhaps - just perhaps - there are things OS X, Linux, et al can do that Windows can't.

And besides, with more Macs being sold, perhaps marketshare isn't everything. An audience of several million is still an audience of several million...

Had Sega not even considered, not for a single moment, the disaster that was the 32X (and to a lesser extent, conveniently skipped over the Mega CD) and instead concentrated on the Saturn, we could well still have Sega in the running today. Sega post-Mega Drive (Genesis) had no real focus; if they had really tried, they could have stayed in the running against Sega (it was, after all, their market with Nintendo to lose). Souring both customers and retailer's pallets, they really were the architects of their own destruction.

It would have helped a great deal had Sega known how to market at all. So many great computer/gaming companies are prone to this: Sega, Acorn, Commodore, SNK...

Personally I'm of the view that the Pirate Bay was perfectly legal - they didn't carry any copyrighted works themselves, just as Google don't carry the materials they link to. This works for many people. Most folk don't want to have to install the software to make their microwave work, they just want to push buttons, and likewise, they want their music to be that simple too, as simple as turning on the radio, or as close as they can get to that.

That is why Apple's iPod is so successful, because of all the sheeple, and Apple's willingness to pander to that principle.

I don't think I understand. You say that people like having nice, easy to use music players, and then this makes them sheep? That doesn't seem to follow. I'd say people like having nice, easy to use music players, because being able to use your music player is an integral part of it. It's hardly following the crowd to say "Hang on a minute, this actually works well."

  7. Re:iPod's marketing is so clever, on How iPods Took Over the World · · Score: 5, Insightful

Because, of course, you can only put songs from the iTunes Music Store on an iPod, right? Even though the iPod was released before the iTMS... iTunes defaults to ripping tracks as un-DRMed AACs which you can play anywhere you can play an AAC. Or you can rip to MP3 or WAV or AIFF. And you can import all those into iTunes without any DRM going on them either. If you don't want to buy from the iTunes Music Store, guess what? You don't have to!

My Dad loves his iPod shuffle. Why? Because it's just so simple for him to use. He's not a simpleton, he just doesn't want to have to worry about using his MP3 player. He can just drag his songs into a playlist in iTunes when he's listening to music, plug in his shuffle and they automatically transfer across. No need to interrupt his workflow, no need to worry about whether he's copied the right ones or chosen the right folder. It's seamless.

I love my iPod. Why? Because I can just plug it in and my entire library syncs. No need to worry about whether I've copied over that new New Order album - it's just done for me.

Don't just think everyone buying an iPod is a sheep. Perhaps they're popular not just for their looks, but because they're actually pleasant to use?

You can remap the Command, Caps Lock, Option and Control keys from the Keyboard & Mouse pane of System Preferences - you get the choice of making any of those keys act like any other, so you can bind Control to Command, and so on.

I like seeing my books lined up on my shelf. I want to be able to know I'll be able to read my books in a few years without having to worry if I'm authenticated, or I have the right hardware...

If Apple had wanted to move to Windows, they could well have done so a long time ago. They even considered using the NT kernel for the next-gen Mac OS before they settled on NeXTSTEP. Thus far however, they've shown no signs that they're even considering it; and if you look at it, does it make sense? Apple are doing very well producing both the hardware and the software, and the software is definitely considered important to Apple (at the WWDC 2005, Jobs said "the heart of the Mac is its operating system"), and the OS is definitely well-loved by the Mac community (I personally adore OS X; the closest I've come to an operating system as nice as RISC OS). If Apple switched to any form of Windows, the revolt would be huge.

I see no advantages to Apple to switching to Windows; they're doing very well with OS X.
