Yay...We finally got something where how I made/make my living is relevant. I, too, "work the board". Nice high end ones when it's somebody else's. Don't ask for names, just put me in front of one, and see if I can produce satisfactory results. Live, studio, mostly TV. While I get to play with the occasional 16 channel Mackie(not the best, but the help can drop it off the van, and it still works perfectly, for a while.), usually, the "best" mixer I see down here came with Windows. Maybe now, you might understand why I get so pissed at the "copyright whores" when they cripple my equipment just to keep the price out of the reach of the consumer and the low(no) budget bands that just want to produce the best sound possible. Another "yay". I actually agree (OMG) with your post. While I personally thought that 128k sounded a bit muddy(192k is my personal minimum), It wasn't a blind test by any means. I sure would like to try it sometime. I always wore ear protection at the airport(A&P mech, also) and the shooting range, so I'd like to think my ears are in pretty good shape. However, I STILL think digital audio is garbage, but convenient and necessary for multi-generation work(difficult to do with consumer DAT because of you know who. Might require "illegal" hacking to accomplish). In another non-blind test, I compared a DAT machine with an analogue multi track(12 or 24 don't remember.) moving at 15 in/sec. The DAT sounded like "Mississippi Mud" compared to the other. While the "depth"(16 bit) might be sufficient, digital just does not take enough samples. For me it completely destroys anything above 8-10khz. How can one expect an accurate representation of a complex waveform when you barely get 6 samples at 8khz?. A-D conversion and back simply "rounds off" too much. I'll need to see it on a scope to verify that. I'm not sure how familiar you are with TV broadcast signals, but the signal coming out of the exciter(modulator) looks nothing like what comes out of the antenna. We have to do all that pre/de emphasis, phase distortion, differential gain stuff also. I can only imagine that the same thing is happening in A-D D-A conversion. I never claimed to be a designer, so how can I know for sure? Come on down and build a studio, so I can take the test, ok? As a side note, mp3 or the other compressors do nothing foe me except allow me to put my collection on the computer so I can let it play for a week or so without having to get up to change the damn disc every hour. I sure hope I don't have to hack DRM to keep doing that in the future. Discuss?
My real point is that the lifetime of all hardware is finite. I wasn't trying to point any particular deficiences. And I actually do believe in using the equipment until it longer functions. No reason to do otherwise, unless you're just trying to "keep up with the Joneses". That said, The capacitor issue is an issue because most manufacturers are just using the cheapest materials to "get it out the door" with the greatest profit possible. It also helps to create higher turnover. Quite a shame to see a thousand dollar computer made useless by a five cent cap. The link I provided might not have been the best example. I probably should have looked something a bit more "generic". The capacitor seems to be the single most failure prone electronic device we have. Aside from the tuners in old radios. Air still makes a pretty reliable dialectric.:-)
We may just be moving it around in time and space.
Heh...That thought reminded me of this from the movie "Network""...And you will not take me off the air for now or for any other spaceless time!"
I know the Americans aren't the only ones creating violence. They certainly have no monopoly on that. At the beginning of the 20th Century they finally moved it "off shore". I'm really just trying to point out that we're all the same here. I'm hitting on the Americans(goes for Europe also) a little harder than the rest because they constantly preach about how "peacecful" they are and how they are thr great providers of "freedom and democracy", when their actions show otherwise.
Jeez, man...It was a joke(lame maybe)...I even put that smily thingy there to tell you it was a joke. Obviously we don't have the tech to leave RF unregulated. Give it time. It will happen because someday, someone with the ability will make it happen if he/she wants. I know that things that you do that extend over your property line need to be regulated. By who I don't know. In the meantime, I'll just vote for the guy/gal that comes closest to my knowledge and beliefs. And I'll put two smilies on next time, if that will help. I'm sorry...whew...Can we be friends, now? BTW, I thought the cartoon was silly myself, and actually lamer than my joke.
But you can change the station or (gasp) turn off the radio. RF without a demodulator is pretty quiet in and of itself. Oh, wait... Come to think of it, Gov't should regulate acoustic(accaustic?) speach and leave radio alone:-)
That and I believe the machine puts itself on "hold" while the file is downloading. A 1 MB file can hold you up for over five minutes on dial-up. I just need to be more careful, and check the status bar. Won't be a problem then.:-)
may I ask why?...mainly the fact that it takes forever to load up the full version or even just the plugin.
You just answered your own question, and that's why I'd like a heads up. Then I can download it for my perusal at a more convenient time. When I'm expecting a pdf, I don't mind the wait so much. Otherwise it looks like my machine locked up. There's no warning on how big the file is, and the time waiting for it to download(especially on dail-up) can be very distressing. I don't always catch the info in the status bar. And focusing on the tiny print there can be painful to the old eyes.
Does anyone remember a time when outsiders weren't meddling in the Middle East?? You may have to go back a couple of thousands years or so. In more recent times, any moral high ground we could have possibly had disappeared in 1967.
Give 'em time. The war ain't over yet. The day is young. Or maybe they used them all up while doing our dirty work for us in our proxy war against Iran.
I don't. The only purpose for national boundries is to restrict an individual's travel rights, and to create economic stratification for profiteering corporations. Without poverty, how can we motivate people to work?
...how about insisting that the government enact legislation to prevent them from being misused.
Many times such legislation doesn't apply to gov't (OSHA, for example). They would just exempt them selves. With almost every election going 50-50, I doubt that we would unite enough to accomplish that. Outside of Slashdot(actually, both sides of Slashdot), most people are just trying to vote themselves a bigger gov't check or tax break(same thing).
P2P does indeed make this a different issue. I was reacting more to this statement that you made:Yes of course you will find drug addicts if you look for them but arresting them does absolutely nothing because the drug dealers will continue producing more drugs. , and I made a feeble attempt to qualify mine with the word some(kiddie porn).
So yeah they are a distributor, but I don't see a way in which you can stop internet distribution. You can make it so that its not profitable for the producer and P2P does that by default. You can also make it harder to distribute but I don't think arresting people is the way to do it. Filters work best.
Absolutely correct. And with encrypted and anonymous P2P, even more so. We do indeed need to go after the producers(and the parents in some cases, but we have to be careful there, because parents can and do take perfectly innocent pictures of their kids that might not look so innocent to the dope at the One Hour Photo. And of course that leads us back to the real issue. Is it about kiddie porn? Or just a way to incarcerate "undesirables"?).
Yes of course you will find drug addicts if you look for them but arresting them does absolutely nothing because the drug dealers will continue producing more drugs.
They wouldn't if they had no customers to buy. Drugs, stolen peoperty, SPAM, and yes, even some kiddie porm, are not produced in a vacuum. They need customers to make the business viable.
In this situation we have to remove the producers of child porn and by doing so, the child porn will eventually become too rare to find...
No, it will only make more profitable for the remaining producers, and will give them even more incentive to produce as much as they can while they have the increased market share. The desire for money seems to trump the fear of prison if enough money is involved.
I'm not saying we shouldn't go after the kiddie porn producers(we definitely should! And we need to go after the parents who are pimping their kids in search of a fast buck.), but going after the consumer is very reasonable. And depending where you are, the definition of kiddie porn is quite variable. Puberty should be logical dividing line, considering that in some countries, and even some states in the U.S. the age of consent is 14.
Or pill pushers? Well, I certainly got sucked in..."Puppy Uppers", for when you feel like this:Zzzzzz..."Doggy Downers", for when you feel like this: "Woo-hoo!!!" "yeah, baby!", "Yay!", "I wanna kill, I wanna kill, I wanna see veins in my teeth!" However, the answer provided did jibe with how I feel in the afternoon.
the old rule still applies. Anything will fly if you put a big enough motor on it.(not that this thing required a big motor) Notice I don't consider stability an issue here. Obviously they do and did. And it worked. Cool. Similar wing design here. I noticed they didn't show the "landing". I hope it better than the one in Star Trek IV...

I just wanted to say thanks. Re:The Cartoon Guide to Federal Spectrum Policy (pdf)
new life is nice and all, until this starts to happen.

I'm not falling for that again.
Quitting is easy. I've done it thousands of times.

Maybe they should just flood the country and use mini subs. You won't have to worry about the stairs.
Hmmm...Maybe if they didn't create so much of that violence.
Does anyone remember a time when outsiders weren't meddling in the Middle East?? You may have to go back a couple of thousands years or so. In more recent times, any moral high ground we could have possibly had disappeared in 1967.

Until they perfect the thing, why not use thumbprints?
Cutting off a thumb is easier than ripping out an eye. Is there an MD that could verify that?
Oh, my God! She fainted! Is there a doctor in the house?
Why, yes, I'm a doctor.
Eh..Chomp, Chomp, Chomp,...What's up doc?
...I can understand the need for a passport.

Damn, you're the second one I caught reading my mind today! Post timed almost to the second.
Not even the giant ones? Bet you were thinking of the other ones...huh?
Now the Dept. of Homeland Security is going to order various municipalities to block the sun.
