  3. Printmaking on What Ancient Tech Do You Do? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've just begun doing some printmaking at home. Doing linocuts and printing them by hand on paper. Just looking up information, I found Escher did this as well. Certainly an artistic figure many geek-types have taken to.

It's not difficult or expensive to do (all you need is the linoleum, some blades, a brayer and ink), but I find that many traits good coders have apply well to it (like everything, right? Also think design/typography). I find it a satisfying after a day of programming.

    Call me foolish for asking-

I'm looking to clean up a friends Windows machine in a few weeks: would this do the trick? If not, how does one go about removing all the software that's crippled a computer?

It's pretty bad, my current suggestion is to format the drive... maybe there's a better way.

  7. Real Effect? on EC Approves Unconditionally Sony-BMG Merger · · Score: 2, Insightful

Obviously, this is not a 'good' thing for music listeners, but I feel the music industry has found it's niche at this point: take acts and push them like hell. Make them popular. At this point there's no reason to stop this (unless they actually decide they want to put out something for it's artistic merit rather than financial potential).

With rare exceptions, I haven't been buying music released on the 5 or 4 major labels. I feel like this won't even really matter except to those who may lose jobs because of the merge. If you're buying music put out by the majors, you can keep doing that. If you're not, you're gonig to stick to your indie labels and local musicians and it doesn't matter anyway.

Obviously giant corporate beings are no good (I would love to see clear channel go) but until they ruin independents, can anyone see any changes this might make?

  9. Good first step-rendezvous? on AOL-Yahoo-MSN Messaging Unified... in the Workplace Only · · Score: 1

It's about time that these three are at least considering coming together in some manner. Could lead to some more competition and better messengers (I think AOLIM has been getting worse) not to mention the possibility of open protocols. The article doesn't go into much depth - does this at all seem like a corporate version of Apple's Rendezvous?

  10. Re:Great? on Wi-Fi by Rail, Bus or Boat · · Score: 1

The dynamics of family and socialization have *definitely* changed for those with cell phones. Things are better - helping people keep in touch, as you mentioned - but also for the worse.

One-on-one conversations with friends of mine are often disrupted by a cell phone ring. And that's not too bad, but there people who find it acceptable to start conversations on the phone in that situation. It's irritating. I have been guilty of it as well, but I'm trying not to.

My brother at the dinner table just pulls out his phone and starts text messaging people. What is that? He won't talk to us during our meal, but when someone calls he sits at the table talking? I'd say that's quite a change.

I agree with you that productivity is good, and on travel time it's good too. I just don't feel it's going to be such a boost in productivity to be worth it. At the same time, the geek in me thinks it's awesome, and I'll probably take advantage of it.

  11. Great? on Wi-Fi by Rail, Bus or Boat · · Score: 4, Insightful

While I think Wi-Fi is really exciting - I just got an iBook with an airport extreme card - this is getting to be a bit much. People who carry laptops with them to/from work while commuting are probably at work on the computer all day. Now they're going to travel and use the internet? And then get home to their broadband connection and check their email?

Internet connectivity blanketed everywhere would be amazing. The convenience is great, but we need downtime and to interact with other people. If you're looking to occupy yourself on the train say hi to the person next to you. A person is an incredible thing - they probably have all sorts of stories that you can hear from no one else.

Maybe no one cares about that. But there are so many other issues. Imagine the security problems that come out of this. And what kind of costs is going to incur on the user? Advertising? By the minute? And trouble from illegal activity happening through these AP? It'd be great if it works out, but I think this is some time away.

  14. Re:Apple's already done the work on Recording Industry Hopes To Hinder CD Burning · · Score: 1
You're right about that, but (at the moment) digital only distribution cuts out a huge market because not everyone is buying music off the internet yet. There's potential for this kind of distribution in the future, which will be an exciting and scary thing...

Online music stores, if they became the only way music was distributed, will become strange places. Depending on the founder, they could be all major label artists, all independents, or a hybrid which features Britney Spears and your next door neighbor. It would literally level the playing ground (as far as distribution is concerned) allowing everyone to distribute the same way. I don't know if that's good or not, but there would be a lot more music to hear....

  15. Re:I prefer visible encryption on Clay Shirky: RIAA Succeeds Where Cypherpunks Fail · · Score: 1
But the great thing about encryption being implemented transparently is that you won't know it's happening, and you can keep your privacy from whover may try to keep track of your dirty little secrets. It doesn't affect you at all (you get all your data, and so do the people you communicate with) and it keeps you away from trouble.

How often does the lock on your browser change how you surf the web?
