Even if they were compiled properly you can't test the same programs. Eash OS will have pro's and cons. The benifit of these benchmarks could be finding those pro's and cons but most of the time these benchmarks set out to prove a point rather than to investigate the benifits of either system.
I agree I bought a PC cos I liked windows 98 and MS word was nice then... And although I have bought WindowsXP the only benifit I've really gained is stability and speed but the speed was not gained through the software upgrade but rather through hardware improvments I spend more money on hardware cos it has more obvious benifits. I work with programmers who still use Win98 and don't see the need to upgrade. I buy games but there's no reason to buy much else because I have a word processor, vector package, art package already and the freeware open source options are often good and sometimes better than the comercial programs.
It's not the software at fault. They really are mad. If I was to post a movie clip on slashdot I'd be posting a bittorrent link or my webhost would shut down my site in minuites! P2P is a solution here along with how to get Linux ISO's out fast.
I agree to some extent but surely they will accumilate over time. It would be terrible if some large meteor that we tethered to earth came crashing down to kill us all!
They will still need to provide power to the orbiter to pull upwards otherise an increase in weight on the cable will make the center of mass of the elevator and orbter combined at a closer point than the Geosynchronous orbit. This would pull it down. Also if the wind blows on the cable it's going to pull. It will be along time before they get it working safely! Good luck to em though.
Thank's Anonymous Coward, I use debian testing and occasionally some packages from testing and some more from mentors.debian.net and I've had better stability from packages than any other distro i've tried. Which I won't name here... they all have pros and cons. I like debians stable stable version. If i'm running a server I'd rather have a rock solid debian system with all it's out of date packages than have the latest kde/gnome versions on it, cos it's gonna be running ssh apache etc...
they appear to have a 17 digit alpha numeric id containg a-z 0-9 thats 36^17 id's possible so they could have 286,511,799,958,070,431,838,109,696 cars...
Surely with better management they could label every atom in every car with a uniq id!
I'm so exicied I can have 2 or more movies running at once viewable from any angle. Nothing impressed me here. Scalable windows would be nice in windows but I'm happy with shift- in xterm and mozilla. Writing notes on the back of windows is a bad idea! As long as the guys realise that it's good to experiment, there are good new ways of working that we don't use now, and that these arn't them!
I just hope they don't patent it all...
Actually this site was really good during the event I refreshed this and watched streaming video thanks to BBC news. The site stopped working just before it got slash-dotted.
I've got a nice ~30$ router and I've never experienced these problems, not sure whether to believe in this article or not. What I am sure of is that I've never had a problem I wouldn't install my machine on an infected network without being very sure of my machine security. If the internet is truly this infected these days then you must have a router, or some trusted external firewall.
I had a an Acorn Archimedes back in 1991 and it was hard migrating to windows. I had a good word procsessor on it (may have been called 1stWord?) they fitted on floppy disks with plenty of space for my documents on the same disk. Word was nice but I was disappointed in it then and I still am... Openoffice is too bloated, slow to load, I just don't like it. Abiword is slightly better but I still find it bloated why do people insist on having to support.doc format. All I want is spelling good layout, wordpad would do if it had tables. any conversion can be done by a commandline program. I just wish Mozilla would produce a wordprocessor, if they got the css2 print style sheets working properly then I would use composer instead of Abiword. (perhaps it does now I haven't tried for a while...) The HTML format does everything I need a word processor to do.
My pocket PC an iPAQ 3850 is not like this, perhaps others are, I changed my bootloader. And operating system. I've never seen any bios settings but the OS is certainly not in ROM.
Users should know what a.jpeg,.pdf,.doc etc... extension is and if it's not one they recognise then don't open it. It's worked for me for years. It annoys me that windows by default hides 'known file extensions'. Some thing I always turn off before I install a machine for a friend. It usally takes people a few minuites to get it and saves me hours fixing their PC in the years to follow.

How long before someone finds a security vunerablilty in your T-shirt, your T-shirt could endup full of worms!

That may be so but if they give regular readers moderator points and occasional readers meta-moderator points it could be quite interesting...
Perhaps Jenny will get a +5 troll

What happens when someone parks in your space? Does your car find another space? Would it be possible to get a red flashy light for the front too?
FreeDOS is a operating system I've only ever used in emu's bochs, qemu etc... Happy birthday FreeDOS!

an inch is exactly 2.54 it has changed over the years as also has what a meter is see the history of length. I can see how this causes problems.
What kind of geek reads a Linux book anyway? $man man

Take a mirror with you.
We could pay per hour, perhaps there will be a budget 1 hour version too.
It's not hard to get people to recycle these they just need to give money back for returns. Like the used to do with pop bottles.
Is this news not 60 years old?

it's not the same rendering engine though
I'm a sceptic though I, like others, find it hard to believe this article... so it's news on slashdot.
