So a 1000$ iPad with 128GB storage. So overpriced with limited storage for a Ultrabook...

A more apt comparison might be that I just bought a Samsung Galaxy S 3 for 50$ (plus 3yr contract of course), and spent 60$ to put an additional 64GB microSD card in it. I got the cheap 16GB version so I *only* have 80GB of storage. However this has been available for about 7 months now, not currently not released.

I would guess this trend will only continue to get bigger/better. I broke the chains to Apple a week ago, and that is one of the reasons why.

Another reason why? Well an ultrabook usually runs a real processor, not a mobile one (well a mobile version of a real processor). By that I mean something made by Intel or AMD, not Motorola, VIA, designed by ARM, or called A#, or Snapdragon, etc...

It is a stupid comparion. Its just a mobile device with more "apple" memory than they have allowed in the past. Considering two 64GB microSD chips cost a grand total of 120$ retail, one can see how Apple makes its money with such high margins.

  6. I'm sure it was just chaulked up as an excercise for urban enviroments. However maybe the more nafarious purpose is to desensitize troops from aiming at civilian targets. Thats not a mom with a stroller, that's a potential taliban and a bomb. Shoot Shoot Shoot. Somehow I would not be surprised that this is how tragaties like the wikileaks gunship video get started during training.

Of course perhaps I am being paranoid and cynical. It could be these are excercise to train troops to avoid civilains in urban settings. One can hope.

  7. Maybe something about pretty much the whole population being war hardened vets for like like last 40 years or so and continually fighting this kind of war.

I'm not sure how determined your average local american is, but I don't think there is really a comparison. That said there are an awful lot of war vets in the US as well. However somehow I doubt most of these would be on a side of revolution, I would suspect unless extremely disenchanted, they would likely be with government forces, further making this sort of action pointless.

OK, perhaps it's just for fun, but how can I be the only one on slashdot that is saying this hasn't really happened rather than just talking about it.

First of all this would have been front page news to the whole world, not just state run Iran media. It's not like this stuff isn't actually monitored or anything, to say anything about actual monitoring of specifically of Iran and their crazy. Second they don't have the technology, not even close. I recall years ago it was in the news where Iran was testing medium or long range rockets, and they couldn't even do that. In fact that same media got caught photoshopping an image "proving" that the lauch had been a success (when it really was a huge failure). Thats not even an ICBM, let alone a rocket capable of actually making it to any distance into space (like the 120km they were talking about).

Anyway I find this only slightly more plausable than the Unicorns in NK (who were at least able to inaccurately fling a medium range rocket to scare the bejusus out of Japan). Chaulk it up to "batshit crazy people say batshit crazy things", news at 11.

I think it is obvious why PC makers do not make more touch screens.

I have been re-watching "Enterprise" on Netflix lately and I was suprised to see that apparently by the time we have warp engines we still haven't figured out wide spread touch screen use. Rather they use little buttons on the side of the monitor. It is clear that PC makers are fans of Star Trek, or afraid of some temporal paradox, and do not want to introduce touch screens before their proper time. Though apparently no one thought to tell they makers of handheld devices like phones, as apparently my Galaxy S 3 is looking distinctly more advanced than anything those poor saps on Enterprise has available to them. I can only come to the conclusion that it is because they need special radiation hardining for the rigors of space or something.

As far as defending against home intruders and government: A) A shotgun in close quarters is probably easier to use for the relitevly untrained, and is way more scary to boot. Hell 50 Cent survived getting shot like 7 times with a 9mm, guess how many home invaders would survive a blast or two if a 12 guage at close range, i'm guessing zero (not that I'm calling 50 cent a home invader, its just an example, relax). B) How much of a fight to you really think the few of you that actually own an assult rifle or whatever VS what is a modern US army for example. How much of a difference do you think it would make to only be limited to a 5 shot rifle? Hint: The answer to both is "not much".

Seems like a pretty common sense simple thing to do, but hey whatever. Don't sell weapons designed *specifically* to kill people to the general public and then get all surprised when *GASP*, they are used to kill people...

  22. Because they are idiots. on The World Remains Five Minutes From Midnight · · Score: 3, Insightful

I've seen several perfectly rational intelligent friends of mine vote Conservative up here in Canada. When I tried to explain to them they they are in essance voting against their best interests, as they all work for Unions when clearly the Conservatives were anti-union, all I got was denial. They explained to me that there was nothing anti-union about them, it was all just made up by other political parties, etc...

In any case, people can be idiots. There are any number of reasons why people vote like idiots. Some don't know the issues. Others are just ignorent and don't care, or ambilivent. This is compounded by political parties that intentionally lie, mislead, change positions, say whatever it takes to get the vote, etc... Even someone paying attention can have a hard time, though if you pay attention long enough you see what is generally going on (BS). Many people identify with a particular idology, and even if it is fairy tales, will hold onto that like grim death regardless of reality (Ann Rynd, etc...), but you could easily go for the far left as well. This is my belief, and even if it is totally contrary to my personal interest I will vote that way. Also there is perception believe it or not. Up here in Canada for example, it is a pretty sad truth that you just have to drive around a bit to see how different economic groups vote generally. Downtown poor, NDP (left), Suberbia rich, Conservative (right), smattering all over is liberal (centre-left). So do you want to be assoicated with the poor and downtroden, or the successful rich? I have no doubt some simply vote a certain way simply for status. "Well I voted conservative!" (i.e. I am wealthy, or I am going to be soon, etc...). In many cases, I would also say it is pretty sad, but Old people make up a very big demographic. I would say a large percetage of them vote the same way every election, as they made their mind up about a "party" 30 years ago. Never mind what they stand for now, what the current issues are, or how the party may have changed significantly, it doesn't really matter.

Anyway I am sure there are other reasons why people make idiotic decisions regarding voting, but it isn't limited to the US, though I would say their system magnifies the situation. I think it is partially the fault of the political parties. However more fault is with the people not holding them accountable when they basically lie through their teeth for votes, and then get all disenchanted with the process as a result, decide to not pay much attention or take it lightly when really it should be treated as a big decision. Education and civics classes for youth might help eventually.
