  1. How about a normal ring? on Just a Phone? · · Score: 2, Insightful

OK, I know I sound like a curmudeon here, but how about a phone that actually *rings*? I don't need to hear a stupid off-tone rendition of anything, and the last thing I want to hear is some damn Britney Spears wannabe.

If it weren't for the size factor, I'd take one of these any day.

  2. Beginning of the End? on Linus Defends Proprietary File Formats [Updated] · · Score: 1

Now, let me start off by saying that given the previous comments already posted, that Linus's quote is most likely fabricated or out of context.

That said, could this be the end of Linus being the spiritual leader of Linux? Given the already shakey legal status of external modules and firmware interfacing with the kernel, plus the wake-up call caused by the whole BitKeeper fiasco, could this:

    1. Cause developers to put more emphasis on eliminating non- or quasi-free code and interfaces from the kernel, and;
    2. Push existing kernel developers to switch to HURD, with (arguably) a more free / libre attitude?

  5. Failed USB Key on USB Flash Drives for Backup/Long-Term Storage? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've had a USB flash drive fail completely after about two months of every-day (not heavy) usage. First the drive wouldn't allow me to overwrite a file, then it stopped mounting, and then it stopped being recognized as a valid device - all in rapid succession over 5 minutes.

This was with one of the Sandisk Mini Cruzer 256MB drives. I replaced it with another Cruzer (newer model), and after another three months it's mostly reliable, however I've had it become "unplugged" on its own a few times recently.

  6. Use your drivers license on How Would You Change U.S. Election Procedures? · · Score: 1

Rather than setting up the infrastructure and overhead of a separate card to swipe, just use your drivers license; most of them already have a magnetic strip along the back with all of your information. For people without drivers licenses, I believe the regular state ID card has the same setup.

  8. Re:Cosmos? on Origins Mini-Series Airs Tonight · · Score: 1

I saw the show description and said "wow! cool!" and set the replay to record it.

About halfway through, I decided that not only was this a rehash of Cosmos, but a poorly done remake of Cosmos.

About the only improvements were the special effects, except after a while you get tired of seeing the same effect shots over and over.

  9. Re:Related Book on Origins Mini-Series Airs Tonight · · Score: 1

I had heard about the great reviews of this book, and snatched it up a while ago. I ended up struggling through it not because of the content, but because of the many misprints, typos, and grammar mistakes.

So, the book itself is worth reading, but I'd recommend waiting for the second printing.

Um, given that I had to really screw around with the contrast and brightness to see what you're talking about, you've either got a seriously messed up monitor (I guess you never complained about DOOM3 being too dark?) or a really twisted need to look for those types of things.

Of course, given that I felt compelled to verify doesn't say a lot about me either :) And besides, I thought you were really talking about this one.

Being someone who works at Kodak, all of their systems that I'm aware of (old and new) run on some type of commodity OS, whether that be Windows, Solaris, and we still support (and sell!) systems running a now-non-supported Motorola UNIX, SunOS, and other esoteric stuff.

The issue is, now that Slashdot owned by a corporation, there needs to be a compelling cost reason for them to make the change. Yes, it might save them (pulling a number out of my a**) $250 a day in bandwidth charges, but how much would it cost them in developer and qa hours to make the changes?

Working in the support group for programmers at my company, I would like to point out that many (most?) of the programmers intentionally disable anti-virus software because they say it slows down their compiles (we've benchmarked a total of 1-2% slowdown, which is negligible, but they still complain). Now, they're directly in violation of the company security policy, are a constant source of problems for my group, but the company tends to look the other way most of the time because the programmers are the ones creating revenue.
