Even if they pull this off (which does happen to be a huge feat of AI if you think about it) - the general public won't care anymore. They think computers can do everything already.
Who the f*ck cares about the general public? Why does everything we do must be measured according to what "the general public" wants? If we acted that way, many things would not have happened, because the "general public" does not seem to be interested in.
I care about this thing, that's enough for me.
UML and DFDs aren't abstract at all, they are super concrete
I disagree, these are things that are completely imaginary, got not tangible presentation and are therefore completely abstract.
From wikipedia:
an abstract object is an object which does not exist at any particular time or place, but rather exists as a type of thing (as an idea, or abstraction). In philosophy, an important distinction is whether an object is considered abstract or concrete.
And these are the type of things that math is all about.
Another person who is ill defining mathematical thinking. I consider mathematical thinking not only Linear Algebra, Infi et al, but everything that requires exact abstract thinking and has the properties of consistency and a formal and defined "language" to represent ideas.
For that matter, I think that mathematical thinking should be defined more broadly, such as conceiving design ideas and representing them with, say, UML or DFDs as mathematical thinking as well.
So yes, mathematical approach is a must in programming.
Given the other evidence they probably determined there was a statistically significant percentage that the laptop wasn't just a laptop, so they disposed of it how almost every group disables potential bombs, by shooting it.
That's actually not funny but insightful. I guess that there was a high probability that her laptop was not just a laptop, so they used a robot to shoot it. Standard procedure when dealing with suspected bombing devices.
I think that what momen abdullah is asking can be achieved using ham radio. Look for PSK31 for low-bandwith digital communications. Maybe "truckers" in Iran are using CB radio? You can use that as well, maybe hack it a bit. Anyway, building a simple 80-100MHz FM band transmitter is very easy to build, just hook it into a power amplifier for better coverage.
Look at the first search result on google for "fm transmitter", this is what i found. seems easy enough to build with easily attainable components.
I looked at the tetris.js files (just replace Xetris-en.html in Xetris-en.js in their demo tetris url), and I must say I don't think they wrote a JVM is javascript. It looks more likely they disassembled the bytecode and "transformed" it into javascript code. Neat idea.
Imagine one of these quietly sneaking up on you at night and crawling on you while you sleep, turning its 'face' towards you and suddenly calls "BOOOO!", then quickly escaping. The coroner will have a hard time to finding out wtf happened.
gamma rays travel in the speed of light right? If the event happened X light years from us, X years in the past, aren't we cooked before we know it happened? Only when the burst energy reaches earth - that's the moment we know it happens.
He took the source for a bacterium, he forked it, and made a newer, cleaner version. He is about to start testing. His version does not yet actually do anything, but if all goes well it will be a great foundation for new and usefull stuff. What you're saying is really funny and true, but let's not forget (and people who are not in the field may not really comprehend this) that these 'technicalities' are far from being easy in biology nowadays and for a long time from now... The whole idea of TFA is that someday, maybe, we could do this:)
Osama bin Laden must be laughing his beard off watching us Americans collectively shit our pants over a breadboard with some wires sticking out of it. Great straw-man argument.
I EXPECT security personal at airports to be paranoid, or else you would never had the guts to board a flight... If such security wasn't in place a lot more planes would have blown out of the skies.
On top of that, as a Physics grad and EE enthusiast who really knows his way with breadboards - and believe me, if I'd seen her in an airport like that while being armed I would have definitely put a bullet through her head.
Fuck, she could be the first MIT grad who is nominated for a Darwin Award. And I bet she could win!
You missed the real stuff:
1. No need to find where to download from
2. And ofcourse - dependencies resolving! No DLL-Hell, no finding needed packages by yourself
Windows is such a toy...
... there's plenty of reports of atrocities being carried out by US troops in Iraq... the orders seem to be coming from the top. I was going to ignore you, but instead I'm going to include here a reply you already got. It seems like you are repeating yourself.
On a side note, and emphasizing my original statement - it's real easy exaggerating about reasonable practices (guatanmo etc), but pretty hard to address the real hard issues - like Darfur, Ruwanda, etc.
... how can you justify that troops are being used in Irak instead of Darfur... Who said anything about that? In the worst case I can only say it's a bad judgment call to send forces to Iraq (IMHO it should have been Iran), but no organized atrocities are being done by US troops in Iraq.
Gee, someone else is worse than you... that makes all your crimes ok. That's not what I said. I am going against the hippocratic attitude of accusing the victim, instead of going against the aggressor. Although it's somewhat a different aggressor.
Can they see through the roofs at Gittmo? Mod me a troll but I think that it's very simple and convenient (and even sometimes 'cool') to condemn something that is quite understandable (I would even say a necessity), than to do something about much more blatant and horrifying atrocities such as the things that happen in, say, Darfur.
Wow. Microsoft invented the touch screen. I'm impressed. What's next, a pointing device that you can slide around and click things with? Wiseass, this is a MULTI-POINT touch screen. This is a totally different approach than current touch-screens.
More (amazing!) demonstrations of this concept here.
It's like saying: a drug against virus has been found. Hell! WHAT virus? They are all different! Yes, but a drug that targets viruses specifically, when it will be found, will be revolutionary. There is currently no "antibiotic"
against viruses.
Although cancer is another subject, still - these cells should have perform apoptosis and they didn't. Can there be a way to trigger this process in cancer cells?
Ha, you could imagine it like this: The people at doubleclick just got paid 3.1 BILLION dollars. Slashdot Admins! I really need my +1 Terrifying now!
(and I got mod points, I'm serious!)
sure, you can consider it a marketing stunt. but what a stunt...

Hey, i'm gonna have a baby child soon, I need the money! :)
(thanks for making me laugh though)

Just my 0.02c of course.

here's a video example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbuCftzr3YQ
you can find many more on youtube.
oy vey, he can't get on the internet at certain sites. besides - finding an fm transmitter circuit is very easy...

Then you can use this little thingy that I've built: :)
Led Matrix Dice - Shake to Roll
It does D99 if you'd really like
How do you find it possible? Is the boogie-man of terrorism that intimidating?
Yes, it is. I was here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/1897940.stm and almost didn't make it to write this comment.
The summery looks awfully similar to things CMU has already done - see hack a day

You know what's really sad? That I've read the title, before reading the summary, and thought to myself: Hey, this could be a good idea!
