Linux is simply not up to the task of being a stable, newbie-code-monkey-friendly OS for daily use. Just the thought of teaching my coworkers how to us SVN or Git gives me chills. CVS integrated into DreamWeaver allows them to deal with content updates, and Aptana Studio on my desktop lets me do more serious development for the shiny Ajax-y stuff.

This is not because I don't know Linux. I'm no uber-geek, but I know my way around a terminal, and always have 2 PuTTY sessions going - one to dev, for text manipulation and such, and one to prod for real-time access to server logs, double-checking that a file really is in production how it is supposed to be, etc.

I wish my school had that :(

I took an IQ test - well, 3 actually - with a psychiatric program in college, and tested 143, 144, and 143.

High school was four years of torture for me, and by the time college rolled around, I was so sick of sitting in classes listening to things I already knew, I just stopped going. My high school didn't offer anything AP or college prep, so I was stuck taking introductory-level classes in college.

I truly think that had I been challenged (or remotely interested) in high school, I would have excelled in college. As is, It's taken me five years to establish a decent work history and start to work myself back to where I was in the eyes of employers. I'm now in a position where my day consists almost entirely of problem-solving, and couldn't be happier..

Reading over that -- I'm not trying to talk myself up, but comment on how awesome that program is. I'm sure most of Slashdot can related to how I feel.

You seem to be confusing "freedom of religion" with "freedom from religion". The only thing the US federal government is prevented from doing is establishing a state religion or designating a single religion as state-sponsored.

I don't understand the huge emotion involved in purging religion from our history. I'm not a very religious person, and I'm not offended by this. Our laws are indeed based on the Ten Commandments, at least on their base level.

Its much bigger than that - the GPL has some major drawbacks for a company.

Say you're ChildCo, a multinational company, and a subsidiary of ParentCo. Well, you develop a great intranet based on MediaWiki, which is GPL. Now another subsidiary of ParentCo, SisterCo, wants it, so you send them a copy. Is that considered distribution?

If it is distribution, you're now legally required to make available copies of the modified source code, at least by mail. A competitor gets wind of this, sends you a letter, and now you're legally bound to release your internally-developed intranet to your competitor, gutting your competitive advantage.

various unregulated banks sold crappy ARMs to people without checking (or rather, without caring) if they were able to pay back the loans.

Actually, as GP said, due to CRA, banks were REQUIRED to give ARMs to people, regardless of their ability to pay them back. They then did what any business would do, and packaged them with real securities and sold them as a group, to try to offload the bad debt they were forced to incur. Investment banks purchased those, and that's how we got in this situation.
