    No one will ever measure the universe to be perfectly flat, because that would require a perfect measurement with no margin for error, not even by the smallest number you can imagine. With either positive curvature or negative curvature, there would be margin for error but the only number neither positive nor negative is exactly zero.

    Although there are locally flat shapes that are finite (eg torus or klein bottle), it seems likely that the universe is infinite. The observable universe is still finite though.

    Funny how the spying is only bad when it's done against politicians. Against the plebes, it's perfectly fine. I'm shedding so many crocodile tears for them.

    It really is worse though. For example, it means that the NSA owns the politicians, because they have career-ending blackmail material on them. Observe the politicians being incredibly pissed off at the NSA, but not doing anything about it.

    Why, I was looking at some researchers the other day, and they kept switching tasks 4 times per minute. First they're playing with their watch, then they get distracted by all the interesting stuff I'm doing, then they're back to playing with their watch, then they're writing something down. Maybe if they stayed focused they could write more than one line per minute!

    You mean you'll be able to do "apt-get dist-upgrade" in Windows?

    No... there will be differences. We're talking Microsoft, so there's gotta be a revenue stream in there somewhere. They're planning to pretend version numbers don't exist, so that when there's compatibility issues no one will know which version the program was compatible with nor which version they're running now. And there certainly won't be a package manager to deal with all the dependencies, so any incompatibility will be dealt with on a program by program basis.

    Anyone with physical access to you can kill you, and anyone with physical access to many types of medical equipment could set things up so someone else will kill you with it (eg poisoning).

    I know, right? I mean, just the other day I saw a computer for sale with a serious security vulnerability that could result in the computer being destroyed. Anyone with physical access and a high school student's hacking skills could hit the computer with an axe until it stopped working.

    Who in their right mind situates an atmospheric sampling site in the middle of a chain of active volcanoes ?

    Probably someone who wants some sort of warning before a volcano erupts, wants to measure volcanic contributions to CO2, or wants to sample at high altitudes in that particular region.

    It gets harder and harder to take these claims from environmentalists, scientists and politicians seriously, when they're so wrong again and again and again.

    Someday, you'll realize that everything said by a politician, and most things said by a journalist, are misleading exaggerated gibberish. Try talking to someone with a science degree about your science-related concerns.

    Because current smartphones are more powerful than ancient supercomputers. If it wasn't for increasingly wasteful software, you could already be using your phone as a complete workstation with power to spare. And when at home, there's no technological reason why you couldn't connect your smartphone like a desktop (as some people already do with laptops).

    That's still better than the market rate of $0.10 for 12 ideas. In fact, you'd probably go bankrupt if you offered that rate, which is why they're limiting it to the top 3 ideas only.

    Presumably the plan here is to not overlook anything "obvious" that their experts somehow didn't think of. Obviously, the actual plans in full detail will be developed by the experts.

    No, you moron, if you actually read beyond two sentences, they talk about per-capita consumption, and it's STILL higher than non-megacity living.

    But why would he read beyond where they're obviously spouting irrelevant crap using absolute numbers instead of per-capita numbers? If you used your critical reasoning skills, you might suspect that the only reason New York City has higher than non-megacity consumption is because they're comparing megacity Americans to third world populations. But feel free to insult someone who can both read and think.
