Amen. An amendment against gay marriage? This is the pinnacle of our president's social policy? Whatever happened to the great uniter?
Whether one is for or against the policy of Iraq, the lack of disclosure from this administration is baffling. Any argument one can use against the Clinton administration (lack of disclosure, too much rhetoric) can be multiplied 10x with this administration.
But more to the point...Europe's economy is proving powerful (and increasingly united) against US policy, and we can either oblige their requests or become victim of their policies. We can force Microsoft to start operating fairly or ignore their practices until their business will be fined into financial hell in Europe and some German company takes over the desktop share (with a Linux/FreeBSD distro).
Seriously...it requires a friggin wizard. A wizard for christ's sake! Any goblin can learn del program.exe and a mere human can delete some oddly-placed files (and even screw with the registry). But a wizard to uninstall? Seriously.
I tried to uninstall Explorer from a Windows box once. It hurt. Bad.
Nowadays I swear by apt-get. No more Windows. I can't stand being locked into Explorer and going through hell to remove programs + whatever the hell it installed when I didn't uncheck an obscure "install memory-sapping worthless program" box.
The funniest jokes are the ones that are true. This guy has made it clear that he has no desire to spend time dealing with lawyers and Microsoft can certainly harass him.
I love when the line of humor and insight is blurred. Kinda like the Daily Show...not supposed to be a comprehensive source of info but the poignancy is certainly there.
Ehh I dunno about Nintendo catering mostly to the young market. They value that niche highly, but Nintendo certainly goes for a broader base. The used to rule this market and with their history and $$$ (Gamecube/GBA = HUGE profit) I think they're poised to do it in the next generation of consoles.
Eternal Darkness is no child's game. Zelda, Metroid, Smash Brothers, and even Mario Sunshine are stellar games that any gamer appreciates. In my experience: there are people who won't consider Gamecube against XBox/PS2 but most who really consider the options choose the Gamecube. It's library is not deep but it is of fantastic quality. PS2's library has some real gems in its MASSIVE library and Xbox, in its small library, has Halo.
So grandparent is right...why no talk of Nintendo? They aren't going anywhere for a loooong time. And Mario will always sell.
Ah the good times...this troll really brought me back. I was almost ready to start pounding away an angry response, but his form wasn't quite there. His arguments are of the highest troll pedigree, but come one -- couldn't he have been a little more insulting, profane, or condescending?
Good effort though, 8/10. Keep it up, young apprentice. The Force is strong with you.
RMS is the classic schoolyard radical. He has all these social theories that he's never had to test in the real world... Just because something isn't economically sustainable, doesn't mean it's not worth doing.
RMS wrote GCC to test some of these theories. Since then it has become the most widely-available (# of platforms) compiler around, suitable for commercial work. Linux, in which RMS's GNU software plays an integral role, is a top-tier OS, and its development is eclipsing its competition. Saying RMS hasn't worked in the "real world" is irrelevant because many have embraced his vision and have had commercial success. It's also wrong -- read about the variety of companies he's consulted.
I just get very tired of the way the "Free Software" folk insist that they've transcended the evils of software "ownership". Which they've never actually done. Their bills are paid for by revenues from the very businesses they are too pure to work for.
The beauty of software is that it can be copied as a very very low cost. Why doesn't our current economic model embrace this principle? Hard to say, but RMS has dedicated his life to supporting a new model, in which everyone wins.
You clearly don't understand the almighty RMS. A lot of people don't and it's unfortunate. He is a stickler for details because someone has to be for the sake of the free software movement.
RMS envisions a world in which everyone uses a GNUish OS not just because its free but because its the best OS available. As more and more people discover Linux and how rewarding programming can be, its development will increase. Which OS has improved the most the past 3 - 7 years? Probably Mac OS (which has embraced free software to a degree) or Linux. Clearly NOT Windows.
The quality of free software, whose model was largely shaped by the RMS, is amazing nowadays. OpenOffice.org, XMMS, and Mozilla are fuggin smeet.
So of course RMS now works in a building that was paid for by the license fees that Microsoft gouged out of hapless computer buyers. What could be more appropriate?
Lordy lordy. Even if you don't get it, understand that RMS's passion is for nothing less than improving mankind as a whole. If a kid in India who happens to run across my old Pentium 500mhz (don't ask how -- i have no idea), why the hell shouldn't he get a free OS with all the latest software? What would be more appropriate will be RMS winning a Nobel Prize (w/ Linus) for improving the world just a little bit.
Alright thats enough preaching. But stop wasting your time insulting someone without any real argument.
What are you talking about? These clips fall under fair use. They would be crazy to sue over something like this. The judge would be in stitches.
Hell it's free advertising. I forgot about Monsters Inc until I saw that site and I might just go rent it again.
It would've been nice if they used a digital camera though simply because converting a lossy format (MPEG-2/DVD) to another lossy format (Indeo) and then, finally, we have the "master" source which was encoded a 3rd time by the tested codec doesn't do any of these codec justice.
And I know it's been said before...but how the hell can you leave out Xvid, (somewhat) arguable the best (MPEG-4 at least) codec available? (I like paranthesis)
You're exactly right. They should be embarrased that AV software actually exists, and appalled at the fact that it has become a sizable industry. Seriously -- a whole industry that to keep your OS from fscking up.
Now they're releasing something that tries to block viruses. I hope they make XP more secure. My roommate, who's no fool with computers (comp. engineer major) reinstalls XP every couple of months. I hate that machine. With all my soul.
Yup. Don't you just *love* it when you see highly-rated posts with nothing but "correlation doesn't equal causation"? You said it best: no shit!
The crime rate in Chicago has dropped 16%, which is certainly nothing to sneeze at. I don't have the background necessary to make too many judgements on this particular statistic, but it's probably fair to say that they're doing something right. Isn't the most logical conclusion that it is this system that caused the drop? Doesn't it seem natural that fast access to 200gigs of relevant information could help law enforcement a little bit, oh say, somewhere around 16%? Correlation is the first thing you seek when finding the cause of something -- cause necessarily implies correlation. I think a better mantra would be "correlation does not necessarily imply causation."
Of course it's too early to draw broad conclusions about this system. Yes, this is anecdotal evidence, but I think it's clear that this is not being presented as iron-clad scientific evidence, but as an observation of a system that appears to have some real merit to it.
So let's quit disputing a fact that we all know: that correlation doesn't necessarily mean causation. Let's get to the more interesting subjects, like what the preverbial "bad cop" could do with access to this information.
I am an INTP. The Myers-Briggs test is remarkable...I recommend everyone (especially INTP) read it so they can understand the common traits (both good and bad) of their personality.
INTP is a very unique group...only 1% of the world's population. But it probably accounts for at least 75% of programmers.
Slashdot readership I would estimate as high as 50%.
Idealistic...fascinated by complex abstract concepts (computers)...and of course doesn't always shower enough...sounds like a/.er to me!
What I believe will happen is we will end up having a Linux compatibility driver that is not open source at first, then designing future drivers in such a way that they are open source but will not expose intellectual property
So in other words, Intel is considering open source projects in the future. Isn't this news to get a little excited about?
How often in the past have companies brushed aside Linux? Many, many times. It gives me a bit of a fuzzy feeling inside to see guys like this being honest and forthright towards the Linux community.
I know in the short term it would be great if they would give us a bit more respect, but look a little further down the road...big companies are feeling pressure to do things the open-source way.

Wonder how long it'll take before a torrent of new worms using newly discovered security holes tear up the net.
.torrent?
So where can i find this
budum-chink!
Everything made by humans is a product.
Further...all movies have producers, which etymologically can be linked to product.
