Why the silence? In my opinion, because it cannot be done economically.
In my opinion, that's silly. First, your assumption is wrong: "high-end" consoles do not use off-the-shelf PC components. Second, there is no evidence that stuffing PC components into a "consumer" form factor is a matter of "impossible" engineering choices - small form factor computers and laptops already exist with quite a bit of power at a reasonable price. Finally, there is a far more logical reason why they would stay mum about their next release cycle (after all, assuming you were correct, they may as well commit to selling the current platform for the forseeable future, no?): they simply don't want to give the competition too much of a chance to "one up" their specifications.
No, the EC was put into place because there was not necessarily the expectation that the President would be chosen by a popular vote, even at the state level. All the Constitution requires is that they are appointed by the state legislature. The state is not even required to have a popular vote. The EC is basically just a system of state delegates, appointed by the state legislature.
Actually, people cannot. Can you identify salmonella tainted food? Toothpaste that contains lead? Cars that will disintegrate in an accident because of cheap steel? Planes that won't crash because of poor maintenance?
No, but I am capable of demanding them. What you are talking about is simply independent verification. There's no inherent reason why independent verification must be performed by some government agency. The FDA could just as well be a nonprofit certification agency just like Underwriters Laboratories or OK Kosher. And then you, as a consumer, have a choice - pay a little more for the products with that certification, or don't.
I don't think it's bad for "society" at all. Rather, it is a manifestation of increasing affluence. In the days of the Concorde, if you could afford to fly from NYC to Paris, you could afford to do it on a supersonic luxury jet. Everyone else had to schlep along on the ground. Now, ordinary joes can afford to fly, and they provide relentless downward cost pressure, making fast-but-ineffecient things like Concorde unprofitable.
In other words, which society is *really* faster: the one with a few thousands going at Mach 2 and the rest at 55 mph? Or the one with millions going 600 mph?
Point taken, but that might not be the best example any more. In Win 7, you would open the folder in explorer, type *.jpeg in the search box, select all results, and change a "jpeg" to a "jpg." Arguably quicker, particularly if there are nested folders!
See, this is an example where the CLI is faster *for you* because you know how to use the CLI effectively and do not know how to use the GUI effectively. For someone who doesn't know the del switches off-hand but does know how to use the GUI better than you do, the process doesn't take much longer at all:
1. Open the root folder of that tree in Explorer. 2. Type *.bak in the search box. 3. Select all results. 4. Delete.
It might take *slightly* longer. Certainly not "hours." If the folder is indexed for the shell (as local disks are by default in Explorer), it will actually be much faster than the CLI because it doesn't need to traverse directories.
This is not really about Linux vs. Windows, as both of them have GUI methods and CLI methods for accomplishing this task. It is more about GUI admins vs. CLI admins.
Oddly enough, UAC has to be disabled for drive mapping through a GPO login script to work on Win7.
Who told you that? Drive mapping is a userland event, it doesn't require elevation at all.
You mean, like "Guest," "Standard User," "Power User," and "Adminstrator?" Do you really not know that everything on Windows has an ACL?
Ooloorie Eckickeck P'Wheet will be pleased!
I wouldn't be so sure of that - Microsoft's enterprise voice products use SIP, and can interoperate with SIP devices. Even Asterisk.
In *space!*

WWii - Don't Mention The Wii
IF there is life on Mars. Step one to addressing the "ethical question" is determining whether an ethical question exists at all.
The moon mission was very inspiring, but it certainly did not "invent modern computing technology," literally or figuratively. That's just silly.

Only if it is a free market!

Seriously, I'm off to patent my Mentos and Diet Coke method of vehicular propulsion.
It won't be so much welfare if they stick to fixed-price rather than cost-plus contracting.
Netflix
Do you have stairs in your capsule design?
They don't want to reveal any protected IP until their patent on walking is approved.
I'm guessing somebody was annoyed by the Kinect stories recently...

It's a joke, you're supposed to laugh.

Powershell relies on clickety? How so?

So FF5 will be imperceptible?
Did you perhaps mean "conceive?"
