Many of us 'end users' don't have a 'support' contract and don't feel the need to spend a lage chunk of cash to MS for paid support/incident support. If MS had a way to report THEIR bugs free I would be inclined to do so.
The beauty of Linux is that I can usually 'google' and find a similar problem and it leads me down a path. I can also examine the source code / core dump and figure out/narrow down the problem on my own.
Its all about the ringtones, dude! For whatever reason, people are willing to shell out big bucks for a ringtone. Somehow they think it turns their mass marketed ubiquitous cell phone into something that 'shows their individuality'. Its a real shame that there is so much more that could be accomplished with technology today, but things like preserving the business model of ringtone sales is hampering it.
I think it boils down to the issue of fairness and equal justice. Everyone speeds. Only a few get a ticket. Usually when I get pulled over, I get a ticket. When my wife gets pulled over she gets a warning. Its very spotty. It depends on the mood of the officer, attitude, the weather, how many tickets he has written so far this month, how close he is to going off duty, etc.
People speed for various reasons but in general the posted speed limits do not equate to safety of modern vehicles and in many areas it is obvious they are for revenue collection. I would much rather there be ticketing for 'unsafe' operation (such as tailgating or not staying in ones lane). Abrupt 55 to 30 mph on the same road passing thru some 'township' who uses the revenue to fund everything locally.
I wonder if such as system would backfire? If EVERYONE who speeds is automatically ticketed without discretion I predict a support for an increase in these limits.
Wow! What a concept! I was going to post my strategy which is the same as yours. As a consumer I vote with my dollars and tell these guys I'm not willing to accept DRM products.
The last service I paid for was eMusic which was very high quality 320kbps VBR mp3 files with NO DRM. Despite the fact that I never shared/traded these files, paid my monthly fees, the record labels would not negotiate fairly with eMusic and it has killed them because their catalog is so limited.
But then I read slashdot and see all the Apple fanboys touting iTunes and I lose hope that the consumer can win this battle. The only thing I hope is that Apple goes out of business so all the folks who relies on a server to 'grant' them a 'right' to listen to what they own realize the error of the model they bought into. Or perhaps a chance in policy. They've got you buy the balls folks.
Or how about stripping the accreditation from Kansas schools so their science credits do not transfer? Since they are not teaching science anymore and they have even changed the definition of science to not be science, dont give credit for it.
This is a very sad day for our society. I didn't think I'd see the day when a religious agenda could overthrow the scientific method. Somehow I dont think they are going to teach other alternatives such as the Native American Spiritually which has a deep repect for nature and the land. I don't see them talking about Islam in Kansas or Buddhism or Athiesm. Of course all these topics should have been in a 'survey' course of religion, not in a science class. I only hope that the science teacher refuse to teach these topics because to do so would be to practice a pseudo-science and be unethical.
No, 3G refers to how many 'G' bills you'll need to shell out to Verizon for this technology on a crippled DRM enabled firmware locked phone which will only be available in 3 years but only if you commit to a new 2 yr contract and are willing to convert your cable tv and car insurance to the Verizon bundle. Can you hear me now?
Can you imagine what would happen if Slashdot were held responsible for our comments? *SNICKER*
You snicker, but I see the Senate confirmation hearing for a future political position.
Senator: Sir, I have before me posting alledged to be by you on a computer web service referred to as slashdot. Are you familiar with that?
Nominee: Uh, yes Sir.
Senator: Are these postings labelled as from one 'FukMonkey345' yours?
Nominee: Sir I can assure you that was a long time ago.
Senator: Sir, remember you are under oath, I have evidence here that you claimed that you 'Welcome the nerd overlords?' Who are these folks?
Senator: You also stated that 'In Soviet Russia they own you'? What is this commie loving talk?
Senator: Do you have a prejudice against us old people? There are frequent references in the record to 'In Korea only old people use...'.
Senator: Finally, what did you mean when you claimed 'All you base are belong to us'?
Textbooks are such a gouge. I for one believe strongly in the power of the free market economy, so I guess they're not that big of a gouge if people keep buying them.
If there was ever an example illustrating how little free market there is for certain items, textbooks are one of them. It is a mandatory compelled purchase. On campus/off campus bookstores typically 'compete' with books at the same fixed prices.
If the broadcaster doesnt want you to record 'their' shows you cant tivo it.
(1) Copy Prohibited Content. An Analog Video Input Device shall not record or cause the recording of Copy Prohibited Content in digital form except for retention for a period not to exceed 90 minutes from initial receipt of each unit
of such content, including retention and deletion on a frame-by-frame, minute-by-minute or megabyte-by-megabyte basis, using a Bound Recording Method, and provided that such content shall be destroyed or otherwise rendered unusable prior to or upon expiration of such period.
1) Resistance. Turns, right angled plenum, or obstructions from cables/power cords would impede airflow right?
2) While atmospheric differential is key, the magnitude of the differential would be indicate how much resistance/efficiency there is.
3) Even a perfectly working system must only be capable of delivering a certain amount of cool air flow. With these hotter and hotter computers, at some point the equipment exceeds your airflow budget.
You are incorrect. Reverse splits are possible on the NYSE. Delisting is not automatic and there is discretion by the exchange. They would certainly see a last minute reverse split as suspect. Also keep in mind that a split / reverse split does not change the market capitalization of the stock (number of stocks outstanding x share price). The NYSE policy for delisting is for a stock to trade under $1 for 30 consecutive days. If you look at SGI its been closing under $1 for the past 6 months! AT&T did a reverse 5-to-1 split a few years ago.
There are THOUSANDS (around 7000 last I looked) of appeals are filed each year. Only 150 or so are decided. I can guarantee you that each and every person appealing (having worked their way up the chain) thinks it is interesting that they don't hear 'their' case. Maybe they they think there is not much they can add that the lower courts haven't already said? Maybe other more pressing issues are worthy of the limited number of cases selected? Maybe the Judges dont think the technology cases (of which they are probably ignorant of) are very 'sexy'?
First off, Roberts didn't participate in this selection. Second, there is a 'cert pool' process whereby if four justices agree to hear the case they will. Third, there are thousands of cases and all cannot be heard each term. Many, many are not heard and the facy they aren't heard doesn't imply anything about how they would rule.
Roberts who answered very little in his Senate Confirmation hearings, did mention he was open to the idea of either getting rid of the 'cert pool' concept and/or increasing the courts caseload each year.
Automated toll collection tags used in the Northeast ("EZ-Pass") are already being used to monitor traffic flow.
Can you be more specific? Do you mean monitoring flow at toll plazas or are they tracking flow with EZ-Pass at non-toll plaza locations. In Maryland I have noticed solar operated sensors on the side of the highways in various locations. I've wondered if these are collecting EZ-Pass info or just counting cars in general, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?
Creationism is a theory, but as a theory it is neither tesable nor is it falsifiable
IT IS NOT A THEORY, IT IS A HYPOTHESIS! Stop elevating it by calling it a theory unless you are using the word in the colloquial sense of 'My grandma had this theory of why her biscuits are so darned good.'
I am sure they are working on this and I seriously doubt they shipped it knowing this problem (Whatever it is). I'm sure its a major embarrassment for them. I've heard a few things. First, be sure to install the lastest drivers. Second, be sure to install (dont skip) the DirectX install from the Civ IV CD-ROM. Apparently even those who have DirectX 9.0c need to install this. Third, make sure you are using a supported video card - the graphics engine requires T&L hardware and not all chipset run it. I'm using an older nVidia Ti4400 which works fine.
Lets argue for a moment that copy protection prevents piracy:
- Why can't I return a game that I do not like? (Answer: the industry loves no returns because all they need to worry about is prelaunch hype to spur sales in the first few weeks)
As a side-note, the built in Civlopedia in Civ IV is a disgrace and Firaxis should be embarrassed to have shipped something so half-assed. Hopefully a patch will rework it. (anyone there heard of tooltips?)
Well, I don't do it that way. Instead, I have my ripping software put all my CDs into a directory structure of Artist/Album/. All songs go under that. Then you can navigate/find stuff using the directory structure and not use the index file. That is how I use my iRiver H340. I never installed any special driver. Maybe you have a cheaper model or something? Drag/drop from ANY OS that supports USB without special drivers or DRM was a requirement for my purchase which I one reason I went with the iRiver.

Not only that but what about all the 'hidden' services that office installs which preloads the DLLs so that office loads faster? Maybe that optimization helps? (Quicken does the same thing too).
Not really, but I see the irony in their support of "OpenCable" and their intense lobbying againt "OpenDocument".
Sorry, according to the EULA and copyright laws, it would be a violation for me to send you a copy of the rootkit.
