  2. What about skyskrapers??? on Wind Turbines Kill a Few Birds · · Score: 1

How many birds are killed daily from flying into glass windows in high-rise buildings?? An office where I used to work was only 4 stories, and I regularly saw birds smacking into it. For a wind array of that size, 3 birds killed a day seems acceptable. I'm willing to bet for every Eagle killed by it, there were about a thousand or so pigeons.

IBM, Oracle, Novell, et al must not know what their doing by investing millions in building their products around the Java platform. Come to think of it, there are sooo many alternatives to Java for enterprise, server-side computing. Thank you for your insight. I'll turn in my resignation and pick up a .Net book tomorrow.

Ummm.... every hear of Green Cards? H-11B visas? The US is just as protective about foreigner's working here as other countries.

You obviously have never seen the janitorial/landscaping/dishwashing workforce that lives in the US southwest. Saying that the US protects against foreign (illegal) immigrants getting jobs is an absolute joke. In most cases, INS turns a blind eye. It's only when a fortune 500 like Wal-Mart engages in this practice that the government takes notice.

Darl has apparently violated several clauses in the GPL. Are any of these actionable? Is there a precident for this? I can't imagine a more fitting ending for this than Darl being slapped with a class action lawsuit by kernel contributers (as he's being slapped with his cellmate's schlong, securities fraud==bad). I know Linus wants to avoid this kind of litigation, but a successful suit defending the IP rights of contributers and OSS copyright holders, I feel, can only be good for the GPL.

I've always had issues with setting a fixed rate per track. A full movie soundtrack may have 30 tracks on one disk, many of which are brief ( 1 minute) segues. In this case, it would cost you twice what it would do purchase the full disk through retail. OTOH, you could grab some progressive rock concept album that has five 15 minute tracks for five bucks. Albiet, a great deal for the consumer, but perhaps not so for the artist.

  18. And women are just as responsible.... on Pretty Women Scramble Men's Sense Of The Future · · Score: 1
So what's the cause and what's the effect?? When going out to, say, a nice restaurant, getting ready for me is a very straightforward matter. Dress pants, a nice button down shirt, and a tie if necessary. I, like most males of my species, own a single pair of dress shoes. Getting dressed takes no more than 5 minutes.

My wife, OTOH, can take upwards of two hours trying on different combinations of clothes, shoes and accessories just to determine what she doesn't want to wear. Rest assured, when she does decide, the effect will be stunning. But no less effective had she gone with any dozen of her other combinations.

Women instinctively know that men are more visual. Whether they admit to it or not, the whole "getting ready" ritual and the end result is to exploit (yes, I said "exploit") the fact that men are, well, very simple and predictable when it comes to certain things. We can't turn away from a pretty face, and if you show a little attention or interest, for the most part, we'll be eating out of your hands. If anyone caught the episode of South Park tonight (probabally the most well written one I've seen in years) you had it spelled out perfectly. Show a little skin, bat the eyes and give a little flirt, and most guys will throw their hearts (and wallets) on the line.

  24. Re:Biggest Question not answered on The Definitive Episode 3 Spoiler Synopsis · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think Yoda's lack of insight in the prequels has already been pretty well summed up: The jedi are losing their ability to use the Force. No jedi is able to forsee the creation of the clone army. Even Yoda said "blind we must be!!" in regards to this. More telling is the fact that a sith master is hiding in plain sight, interacting with the jedi on a daily basis. What I think is interesting is this same lack of foresight is what leads to the downfall of the Emporer. He is able to plan each and every act of the alliance against him, but his foresight is perverted when it comes to Vader and Luke. He has seen that Luke's compassion for Vader will be Luke's undoing. When it turns out that it is in fact Vader's compassion for Luke that is the Emporer's undoing. This probabally feeds into the whole "balance of the force" thing we keep hearing about.
