"The only thing I wonder about is why would I exchange my 21" 1600x1200 CRT monitor for this 37" device with 1080 lines."
I did the "downgrade" for width reasons. When I have something like Visual Studio or Eclipse open, it's nice to have the visual representation of the form/app/etc I'm building in it's intended native size and still have room for the toolbars/console/menus/etc to the left and right of the workspace. My 1600x1200 (or something along those lines) couldn't do that without making the visual representation quite small on the screen.
"MS has not announced any new update other than they will be using the 65nm process for future 360's."
Yeah, when I realized I didn't include a disclaimer assuming the rumor to be true in order for my comment to have any bearing, I almost posted a reply stating so. I don't like replying to my own posts though so thanks for pointing that out. My original post does depend on the rumor being true.
"MS has not announced any new update other than they will be using the 65nm process for future 360's."
True, but there's not much of a compatibility issue when looking at a current PC vs. a PC 6 months down the road. I'm not making the argument on compatibility issues as much as I am on the cool factor of what's included in the upcoming product.
Now that 360 sales are relatively strong, let's announce a new update that won't be out for a while but be so much cooler (both figuratively and literally:) than the one sitting on shelves right now. Yeah, that's a good idea. This isn't a PC where updates happen so often you might as well bite the bullet as soon as you're ready. This is a console and people really will wait if they think something better is right around the corner.
If you ask 50 different people what Web 2.0 means you'll get 50 mostly different answers. To be clear you need refer to a common definition and that's what the Wiki definition provides. If West Coast Offense were a tech term, it would probably be right up there with Web 2.0.
"Blu-Ray is an always has been superior just based on the fact that it can hold more data"
Yeah. I have some backup tapes that can hold more than my hard drive but I still use my hard drive as my primary source of data storage. Why? Because storage capacity isn't everything. I'm not saying BluRay is or isn't superior but I'd wager data throughput will be a much bigger factor. The cost of the reader and writer will also be significant, especially if the only difference is indeed storage capacity.
"But it prioritizes users with high upload/download speeds. It's better the way it's now - everybody gets their files."
I disagree to an extent. What is high upload/download speed to one node is not neccessarily high upload/download speed to another node. It just depends on the network topography. It's possible for a DSL-connected node to have a faster upload/download connection to a node on a dial-up line than a T3 if the dial-up connection is significantly closer from a network standpoint. If done properly, prioritizing based on uploads could lead to more regionalized torrent relationships. Such a setup still has its downsides but I'm not convinced it's worse or even unfair.
Isn't this why eBay bought out half.com? I remember before eBay got their grubby mits on half, they actually enforced that something sell of 50% of its sale value. Sure the site didn't have as many items but just about everything on there was a deal. Back to the point, why have an eBay Express at all? They already have a fixed prices sales site.
How is the small subset of business leaders any different from the small subset of politicians? Both act in their own best interests based on the money you gave them. They then do the absolute minimum they have to to keep you happy and keep the money rolling in. Besides, if the politians are running the show instead of the business leaders, the business leaders will just pay (through campaign donations and other methods) the politicians to do their bidding. Might as well skip the middle man and save.
"However, only one of us is apparently in touch with the public."
Indeed. Only one of us has been seeing all the stories pouring in about movie studios planning to make very unfree content available over P2P.
"it's not on the "Azureus Network" - there is no such thing!"
No, but assuming by saying "the Azuereus Network" we mean some network owned by Azureus is no further a stretch than your original assuption that "the Azureus network" refers to the Azureus bittorrent client. That's not called the "Azureus network" either.
"The implication when you say something is available via P2P is that it's available for free."
How is that the implication? P2P is a distribution method. It has nothing to do with the cost of the item. If you have been misled, then make a mental note that P2P != free or you'll be getting misled a lot in the near future since some movie studios are now partnering up with various companies who create BT clients to presumably distribute content.
I suppose you have a point on the second comment, but when I read "Azureus network" I just took it at face value and assumed that they were referring to some sort of Azureus-controlled network I was not aware of. It gets complex since Azureus is the name of both the company and the BT client.
It may not be what you hoped reading the headline but it's far from misleading. The headline and article neither made mention of the file format of the download nor discussed the how free the download would be. It also didn't mention availability. You read too much into the summary and now you're mad at Slashdot that ideas you added on your own aren't available. The summary is very short on detail but the detail it provides is correct.
The only one making a fuss here is you. Pertwee did say it and it is technobabble at its finest (or worst depending on your point of view). That's why I used it as an example. Reversing the polarity of a neutron? That's fantastic.
"The point was not to prove the feasibility of the oscillation overthruster, but to show that the science thread that runs through Buckaroo Banzai is a cut above standard movie technobabble."
Right. It's basically an inside joke. Most people think Buckaroo might as well be reversing the polarity of the neutron flow but a few people out there are really going to appreciate the effort put forth in creating the technobabblish scenes. And this sort of inside joke is a lot harder to pull off than throwing Gil Garrard's name into a Family guy episode.
Your dryer, which uses a big 3 to 4 pronged monstrosity of a power cable didn't strike you as an obvious one of the most power hungry devices in your home? You though it might be the thing that plugs into a 150W 12V DC adapter instead?
I'm about 6 months ahead of you with a 2 1/2 year old and a 6 month old at home. At your stage, I didn't play any games and barely watched TV. Now that we get proper sleep again, my wife or I may play a video game every now and then. I've been playing X-Men Legends lately and she's been playing Paper Mario. While one of us is playing, the other plays with/cares for the kids. When you have kids young enough to need constant attention, it's nice to have a break every once and a while and playing video games is a good way to take that break.
Both of the games I've picked up recently (X-Men Legends and Paper Mario) have frequent save points. That has really led to us playing more often since we can play for as long as we want (in 10-15 minute increments).
Who is supposed to put them to death? Me? You? The book of Leviticus is a book of directions for the government and the priesthood (which are pretty intertwined in that Israeli government). The problem is that God destroyed that government. There are large sections of the Bible that haven't neccessarily been done away with (I've always hated that wording) but apply to a government that no longer exists. So in the case that you can find a Mushite or Levite priesthood in a God-sanctioned Israeli government, you could have a homosexual executed. In God's opinion, they are an abomination. In the absense of such a scenario, you'd be wise to let God worry about what to do about the homosexual and in the meantime treat them with respect, dignity, and love (not that kind). I wouldn't worry too much about it in either case. Homosexuals don't even get a mention in God's Top 10 List.
Wrong again. The volume of the ice submerged in the water is equal to the volume of the ice if it were water. The only difference between the water and the ice is density. Ice is less dense. Because of that, it floats. But the only part of the ice that floats above the water line is the difference in volume between it's forzen and melted states. Submerged ice melting in water leaves the water level at exactly the same place. It's not a centimeter, millimeter, or even nanometer different. It physically can't be different.
What are you 13? You can keep the ladies who drink wine coolers. I'll take the ones who drink real drinks like tequila and vodka. But to answer your question, I'll take the beer. Being married with children, I rarely have time to unwind, drink beer, and watch sports with my buddies anymore.
"(please keep all media out of direct sunlight, in a nice cool dry dark place, in acid-free plastic containers; this will triple the lifetime of any media)."
And NEVER ever feed them after midnight.
On a more serious note, I used to worry about eventual degradation but it's coming up on 10 years that I've owned a CD-R drive and I have yet to run across a burned CD I cannot read due to this sort of degradation. Maybe at the decade mark, some of my discs will fail me and I'll change my mind but right now I'm not too concerned.

The late-90's called. They want their OSS-applies-to-everything philosophy back. Hold on a minute. I have another call......Oh, the 90's called again and they want this joke back, too. I have to go now.
