"...games that get shoved out the door too soon because the publisher wants the title on the shelves for Christmas"
There has never been a better example of this than ET for the Atari 2600. The team assigned to do it had two to three months to compelte it so it could beat the Christmas rush. It is pretty universally considered the worst game ever made.
Smash Melee is still pretty expensive. If you're looking to save money by buying a GameCube, you might as well also save some dough on a game and pick up Super Monek Ball 2 instead. It's just as fun multiplayer IMHO, has a better single player, and can usually be found cheap. I got my copy new at Sam's Club for $13.
"The Warriors (Rockstar Games): Already released."
Is this really based on the movie? Just surprised that they would base a game off a pretty bad 70's movie with no star power. Is this thing getting a theatrical rerelease or something? Is somebody at Rockstar just a fan of 70's gang movies? It's actually a good movie to base a game off of since a lot of the action can be translated nicely to a game. I'm just surprised they'd use the movie instead of just making it generic.
"Slapping a nice GUI and all sorts of extra crap defeats that purpose."
No, slpaaing a "nice" GUI would be well within the purpose of Minix. Slapping something as insanely complicated as X11 on Minix would be the part that defeats the prupose. Too bad there's not a windowing system built to be as simple as Minix.
Lisp's syntax only get a bad name because people don't know it. Rest assured that if people got used to the syntax, they'd dislike the strong typing aspects a LOT more than any syntax concerns. In fact, a lot of people I hear complain about "syntax" are really complaining about how the type system works.
Functional languages like LISP and ML won't ever be popular again. They do not lend themselves well to the hack and slash coding techniques found all too often in today's software development projects.
Wal-Mart is an excellent place to buy the 360 at launch (or any console for that matter). Wal-Mart has a fantastic return policy as it applies to electronics. Remember when EB and Gamestop would only take a PSP return if there were X or higher dead pixels on the screen? For the same price, you could get one at Wal-Mart and exchange to your heart's content. Wal-Mart has enough muscle that the distributor answers to them, not the other way aroud as it usually is. Even my favorite large store (Target) can't touch Wal-Mart's return policy. If you're buying a system at launch, no telling what could be wrong with it. Do yourself a favor and pick one up at Wal-Mart first. If the system ends up not having an QC problems in the first 90 days, go ahead and return it anyways and get one from the store of your choice.
I worked at a University campus for a while where we used NetWare extensively. When I started there, Novell folks thought the world of NetWare. By the time I left, there were some serious concerns among the NetWare crowd. NWAdmin was being phased out by ConsoleOne (which is fine) but then the Wed-based manager (forget the name) came in and they claimed they were phasing out ConsoleOne. ConsoleOne was only a year or so old! At that time, we had to run three different admin frontends because each had their own quirks and were incompatible with some stuff. Their NetMail system was a bit of a disappointment performance-wise (but not feature-wise). It took them a LONG time to work out some serious kinks in IFolder (like changing the default directory of the local folder). There's also the problem that NetWare != Novell. A lot of the more popular pieces of Novell's lineup (GroupWise, ZenWorks, NetMail) can be run from a Windows server over Active Directory now.
Sorry if I'm off. The only figures I have on what mortgage payments run in California are off my work in on-line Mortgage Brokerage firms. The average payment we ended up with from our California customers was about $2500 (that's couning all of our mortgage types: 30 yr, 15 yr, 3/1,5/1,7/1 ARMs, and interest only in all of the above).
That's the only figure I have. You say you live on $1200 in expeses? That's pretty good no matter where you live. You're saving for a house so I assume you're renting. Do you rent a house or apartment? DO you have roomates? Do you have a vehicle? I really don't have an agenda behind these questions or anything. Just curious.
Either your numbers are off or you pay a bundle in state taxes or you don't have kids and a mortgage. At $60k, I bring home $3750 after taxes and health insurance.
It depends on where you live. In my neck of the woods (NE GA), $60k goes a long way. Out where most game programmers are located (CA coast), I'd hate to try to live off of that. When you're taking home $4000 a month (after taxes) and spending $2500 on rent or a mortgage payment, it doesn't look so good.
Is GamePC the best place to read benchmarks on a dual core Intel Xeon chip? The article appears to be/.ed already (or just REAAALY slow at my end) so I can't read the results, but I can't help but think somewhere called GamePC isn't exactly Intel's target audience here.
If only they would bring back the Faction. The 8th Doctor writing took a STEEP turn downhill once they spun Faction Paradox off into its own series. I'd love to see them in the new series.
I'd appreciate you not lumping the DC fans in with the X-Box owners. The GameCube is largely the benefactor of the Dreamcast game library (and therefore its fanbase), not the X-Box. The Cube is where the former DC owners (including myself) tend to get their current fixes for all things Sega. Even the post-DC projects like Monkey Ball came to the Cube first. I consider myself pretty hardcore Saturn and DC. The X-Box has never been on my radar. The Cube gives me the best Sega has to offer and I still get most of the multiplatforms games.
That's interesting because last time we looked him up (a couple of years ago), Blanc had him beat. I guess the Surreal Life has really picked up his career.
IMDB is just fun to play around with. My friends and I have this challenge to see who has the most entries for acting in the IMDB. Orson Welles was the top guy for about a week. Then Peter North took over. He stayed there for a long time until it occurred to me to look up Mel Blanc. Anybody out there know someone who can beat Blanc (898 entries for acting)? Anybody out there want to guess on tops in other categories (writer, producer, notable TV appearances)? Is there a way to search IMDB for these statistics (of course, that would be cheating)?
Hey, they let Kevin Smith write that Daredevil comic book series. It's not a matter of how good the games are. It's a matter of how many copies they can sell with Spielberg's name on the box.
Smith's 1st Daredevil story was pretty pathetic but issue 1 sold like hotcakes. First it looked like a Spawn ripoff and then the explanation (far too many issues later) was just a lame Scooby Doo type of thing involving Mysterio. Maybe Spielberg will update the Atari 2600 version of ET.
Calm down on the language, dude. I read your post. Your point is that Dallas is the seen as the center of some eighth level of hades for most Eagles fan. My point is that you hate them a lot more than they hate you. It'd be best to take the job and get over it (assuming that's your only job option).
High horse nothing. I live in Atlanta. I keep up with the Falcons and the rest of the NFC South. While I do like the rivalry in the NFC East, I rarely keep up with it. (I do know that Dallas spanked the Eagles over the weekend, but it seems like the Eagles fall asleep at the wheel every now and then during the regular season so I don't put much stock in that.)
Get over yourself Philly. Dallas is rivals with EVERYONE in the NFC East. They all hate Dallas. Dallas doesn't care nearly as much about hating Philly as Philly cares about hating Dallas. If you ask a Cowboys fan who their big rival is, most of them will answer the Redskins.
Now we're one step closer to the Broadcast Energy Transmitter (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093066/). Better watch out or Cobra-La will use it to deploy spores from space.
There's already an enhancement out there that will significantly improve your child's chances of getting a top notch college degree and earning more income. It's called private school. It's not that popular. I wouldn't expect altering your child's genetic makeup to be any more popular.
"forcing Research in Motion to stop providing e-mail services to all American customers except government account holders"
Now if I were RIM and a branch of the US government handed me down this ruling, I'd shut the whole system down in the US. I'm allowed to keep providing service to government account holders, but I can't keep my business account holders? No thanks. I'll just kill everything in the US until we get this straightened out. Up yours, government.

I will agree that Krystal's food is twice as good as McDonalds, but that's only because I rate McDonalds at 0.

Have some respect! That professor's name is Jerry (or Dr. Hathaway if you're Kent).
