  1. Next Up: XBox Live BCS Edition on Details on XBox TrueSkill Ranking System · · Score: 2, Funny

This is all looking pretty complicated. It's interesting what all has to go on the try to keep players playing similarly skilled players. So I guess the next step is to have two human polls and a computer ranking system. Of course, they would only really be shooting to pit #1 against #2 and then just make as much money as possible of the rest of us. And don't even think about a playoff to determine the best players.

While I do agree that are situations where multiple pages might make sense, there is no way all the text of that article wouldn't fit nicely on a single printed page.

My primary gripe with this article is that there just as much screen real estate devoted to advertising (both of the site itself and of its advertisers) than there is devoted to content. If you have to push that much extraneous content in to publish articles for free, then maybe you should consider another line of business.

  8. There will be no shortage. on How Bad Will The 360 Shortage Be? · · Score: 1

If Microsoft tries to pull an artificial shortage, they are likely to draw the wrath of the big non-electronics retailers like Wal-Mart and Target. I've seen how Wal-Mart deals with big name suppliers. They are in the position to strong arm anyone and they usually do. If Microsoft tries to pull a stunt like this and Wal-Mart catches wind of it, there's likely to be a lot more shelfspace for Sony and Nintendo come December. Basically for Microsoft to pull off a fake shortage, they'll still have to supply the Wal-Marts and Targets of the world with plenty of systems. Then it won't be much of a shortage unless you're Best Buy, Circuit City, or EB/Gamestop trying to sell units.

Enough Rope to Shoot Yourself in the Foot is an excellent example. It's a nice book that's easy to read. I keep a copy near the throne. It can be a bit preachy and I don't always agree with the author's stance, but it's still a good read.

The Exceptional C++ books are also easy reading.

It really just depends on what you want. Way back when I was first moving from C to C++, I bought the book Simple C++. While it was a good book that was easy to read, it took far too long for me to gleam the information from it. It's easy-to-read and simplistic approach was a notch or two down from what I was looking for information-wise. Likewise, I imagine most of the CS books sitting out there are for reference purposes. That's not the arena for books that are fun to read.

There's a TON of cheap, crappy hardware out there that you can throw into your x86 box. I'm talking hardware that doesn't work, works slowly, causes problems with other hardware, acts flakey, etc. Apple built their entire business off of hardware that just works. Windows has tried for years to make that kludge of hardware easier to install and configure to almost no avail. I imagine Apple doesn't want to fight that same fight. Apple will actually be expected to win that fight. If some hacker wants to go out and get the latest graphics card running on a Mac, I imagine Apple would care less. If someone is Asia starts putting OS X on cheap, crappy hardware and passing them off as Macs, I imagine Apple will be a little more concerned. The software can't just work if the hardware doesn't just work.

  13. Buy a GameCube on The Escapist on Women In Games · · Score: 1

I just bought a GameCube a few weeks ago and my wife and her friends LOVE it. There are a lot of games they find appealing. They tend to like Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2, Sonic Heroes, Mario Kart, and Bomberman Jetters. One thing I've noticed about these games are that they are genres most game companies don't produce anymore. Another thing I've noticed about these games is that they center around simplicity. Monkey Ball uses the analog pad and the A button and that's it. Sonic Heroes does have the character switching but other than that it's a two button game (and character switching usually happens automatically until you get a chance to get the hang of it). Bomberman is just bomberman. It's about as simple as that game can be (especially with the return of 2D battle games). It's also very intuitive. I'm not saying women are morons who can't figure out complicated controls. What I am saying is that women tend to be casual gamers who don't want to learn complicated controls.

"my NES still boots up fine"

Really? My NES didn't boot up fine after about a month of use. It started acting REALLY flaky with the whole front-leading scheme they used that was so bad no one ever dared use it again. A few years ago, I managed to fashion a wiring harness using a sawed-off JAMMA connector and a Game Genie that let me play bypass that bulky black piece of carp. Now there's a group of wires running out the front of the console to a connector sitting on top of the machine that works 99% of the time I start the system up.

Most gaming machines have been far more reliable than the current generation XBox and PS2 but the NES is a BAAAAAAAAAAAAD example to use.

There is actually a rom out there where someone "fixed" the game so the pits are easier to climb out of. Having two or three friends over to play your system is cool and all but there's nothing quite like having nine of your closest friends over for a bomberman tourney.
