a system to systematically scrape all non-hidden data on popular sites like facebook and myspace
Did you even read that link? The job it describes consists of archiving all the web content produced by the EOP (Executive Office of the President). Where does it say anything about facebook or myspace? Is it after the secret paragraphs that talk about the death panels and hiding the President's birth certificate?
I used IE 4 on the Mac. Yeah, it worked pretty well. And at the time, the only (free) alternative was the absolutely awful Netscape 4, so IE came out looking like a champ.
Now we complain that these corporations are taking advantage...
What's this "we" business? "We" are not complaining, one guy is complaining and he got his complaint posted on/.
The freeloaders are a fact of life. And they don't really bother me. The value of a piece of software is what it can do for me; it's not dependent on scarcity. If a thousand other people start using this software, it has absolutely no effect on what I can do with it.
I also like the idea of decentralized, home-based power generation, but for wind power it just doesn't work that well. The reason they want to put the windmills off-shore is that there's a lot more wind out there.
The latest Mac OS already has Ruby bindings for Cocoa, and Ruby-Cocoa templates in XCode. I haven't used this yet, so I've no idea how well it works, but it seems like it might have potential.
That is interesting. Another possibility: IBM could take code from the Solaris kernel, and re-license it under the GPL so that it can be included in the Linux kernel.
That is, assuming this buyout really happens. All we have is one anonymous leak.
Why the hysterics? NetBeans, Glassfish and MySQL are all open-source. Nobody can kill them - the worst they can do is stop paying for further development. NetBeans probably has enough users that it could survive on its own. MySQL definitely has enough users - Glassfish is the only one that might be in trouble.
I am not now, nor have I ever been a copyright attorney, but I'm almost positive that whatever copyrights may have applied to "Romeo and Juliet" are no longer active.
I do find it interesting that many private schools have an annual tuition that's less than the average amount we are paying per student for public schools and manage to turn out higher test scores and better educated/adjusted students.
Private schools can pick and choose who they accept. Of course their students will have higher test scores.
Union labor.

Really now... what percentage of non-free, commercial software do you think gets subjected to "expensive and time consuming security analysis"?

"what the hell is 'whiteface'?"
Oh, no. They're not running low on fools. The fools are running low on money.
Who do I need to talk to in order to get paid for pro-microsoft posts on slashdot? I could use a few extra bucks.

But that was a long time ago.

Sounds like a Jerry Bruckheimer film.

Good to know. No PPC support, though.
Next thing you know, they'll be complaining about the styrofoam rocks.
I had always imagined Kirk was much more subtle
Shatner? Subtle??
Well, I thought it was a big deal. I wouldn't call it a show stopper, but it was one of the major weaknesses in the language.

Stories like this are guaranteed to bring out the Russian nationalists...
Didn't take long, did it?
