Could Nintendo launch another console with just the promise of another update to Mario, Zelda and X number of "mid-range" games? I don't think they would risk it, and I think that unless Nintendo can bring back the big names, cater to an older audience (hey, adults have the money;-)) or wrangle a lot of hot new developers they will be forced out of the console market like Sega was.
Ten years ago the big N was at the top of the heap, times have changed but IMHO management has done very little to keep the hot developers on board.
"content providers have to pay for there site somehow"
I disagree, having tried using banner advertising to suppliment income for a site in the past I can say that banners are a completely ineffectual form of revenue generation. The best way to make money for a site that requires expensive upkeep is to provide subscription based services.
And yes, if I had to pay a subscription fee to the sites I visited to keep them alive I would.
Why is the internet considered a big billboard in the first place? Is there any form of advertising that wouldn't be annoying and pointless?
I can live with banners because I can mentally ignore them, I'm fairly sure "interruption" style ads will go nowhere (or if they do make an appearance I'll be first in line for blocking software ^_^).
I guess I'm just sick of all the business analysts out there (at least the ones that work where I do) who bitch and complain about how fruitless web-advertising is. My only hope is that one day advertisers will realize that web-advertising is not unlike throwing money into lava; pointless and costly.
I for one would not cry a drop if web-advertising "just went away", sure it'll never happen, but I can dream can't I?
This site is run in America, by Americans. British news, or Canadian news or Ugandi news will all be flavoured towards said nationalities viewpoint. Feel offended? Feel "cheated"? Then go somewhere else!
The Russians have earned respect and authority when it comes to space exploration, all without media spin. I do not believe that they have been "ignored" in any way. When Sputnik went 'round the world, everyone was listening to *beep* *beep* *beep* on the radio, when Yuri went into space, it was all over television. How many people tuned into the death of MIR? Greatness is for history to decide, not the media.
Also I would like to comment about your diatribe about hypocrisy, granted, sometimes anecdotes can add to a viewpoint, but to be honest it sounded like frustrated venting. I'd like to help you, or tell you that world is a perfect place, but it ain't.
Anyway this is just how I see things, I'm usually wrong most of the time but, hang in there.
In a stunning statement eariler today, representitves of the juggernaught Microsoft Corporation stated that "To aid in the fight for copyright protection, Windows XP will intermittedly crash, throw exceptions and generally lose track of paging whenever possible in an effort to stop people from interacting with, on any level, coprighted material". This press release confirms an earlier statement that "bugs are now features"...
Ok, if we can target any point on Earth with an asteroid (wonderful application, that), could we not do the same thing to another asteroid on a collision course with our home planet? Would there be enough force to knock a "planet killer" out of the way?
"After all, if they are not safe on Yahoo, where are they safe?"
pifft! Gwah ha ha ha!
Seriously though, if you are concerned about your children surfing pr0n online, supervise them. I mean, seriously, if you are really that concerned you will take time out of whatever schedule you have and maintin whatever level of modesty you deem is necisarry. While you are right that a lot more people should probably use internet filters, they are far from perfect and can sometimes be overly-restrictive (censoring news, etc...).
My own viewpoint on the whole "internet = = porn" thing is fairly Liberal, but I do respect your viewpoint and I think it is valid for those who care. I don't think restriction should be forced upon those who don't want it though.
BTW: I know your post was a troll (even if you don't think it was) but c'mon isn't "Every site, even supposedly respectable mainstream sites such as Yahoo, are peddling filth. " a little too broad of a generalization?
Explain why the US Government was so reluctant to join the war earlier then? Surly economists proved that war would have reviatalized the American economy. Isolation got your economy started, war bloated it.
As for your inane Trolling I say to hell with you!
At least get your facts stright, it wasen't WW2 that got you out of the depression, rather, it was several Government policies including a huge isolationist movement. as far as the world is concerned the USA has only been a world player since 1942. If your country hadn't been directly attacked by Japan, you'd still be having discussions about whether or not it is prudent to join the world economy
That's what distinguishes the men from the Canadians.
I'm tired of all this God-damned Canadian bashing, it makes me sick. Canada has a long and proud millitary history! Who do you think turned the tide at Vimy Ridge? Who fought hard alongside the Allies long before America came into the war? Even on a personal level, while many of your wonderful draft dodgers ran for 'pot-heaven' B.C. my father was fighting in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne. You think us cowardly for not declaring war on everything that moves? Ever hear of a word called "diplomacy"? It's that thing that keeps us from killing each other 24/7. I can tell you one thing though, I'm thankful that the democratic process works the way it does and keeps morons like yourself out of power. I suggest you stow your outmoded ideologies back into your ass!
Mark me as a troll or a flame if you will, but I'm totally sick of the lack of respect my country has in America. And I am deeply concerned that the American caricature of "flag-waving right-wingnut" actually exists.
I'm sure they want to see where it goes, if it becomes popular I'm sure they'll start offering pay-accounts that let you read more, or download the whole thing or any other number of reasons (well, money-making reasons that is).
This may be just my first impresison, but it seems to me that this is being tailored for mass consumption. To me it feels like a gimmickey attempt to jump on the fragile resurgant mainstream popularity of fantasy.
I think the concept of serialization is interesting though, get you hooked and then jack up the price (as it were). But, it has been done before in 19th century newspapers with Dickens or Conan-Doyle, and I predict that this may prove to be as popular today as it was then. (Whether or not these stories are of any quality will prove how enduring they are, though.)
But thats the internet in a nutshell isn't it? Try anything once...
The only companies that can make money online are companies that can also make money offline.
I have to disagree, in my experience it is the companies that offer products to a niche market that really take it to the bank. The only reason most people buy things online is because they can't get them locally or easily. The companies that offer products or services that can be aquired locally will end up suffering because they cannot compete with the local marketplace. Enter the niche market, want a Transformers T-shirt? How about the latest Martian Successor Nadesico resin kit? I can't find stuff like this around town, where do I go? The 'net of course!
I guess what I'm trying to say is that there are two effective business models for online sales.
-Have an established company already, therefore loss will be minimal and you can offer better deals/service
-Be a niche supplier and don't get grandiose in design, keep it small and effeiciant and you will make money. Bloat and fear the reaper!

Excuse me Mr. Naked, exactly how much "Work" is invoved in doing something once and then sitting around absorbing money? It used to be that musicians would actually get off their lazy behinds and go on tour and play venues to make money, or wait the whole recording industry that oozed its way into existance back in the late 60s early 70s has created an artificial market that it feels it must protect.
Not to sound condescending but, there are still a lot of loyal Atari 2600 fans too but it hardly revitalized Atari's market share. As the article states, several things about the DC went wrong. Delays from part manufacturers meant that the release dates kept getting pushed back, this is death in the console market, Sony was done with the PS2 teasers and was starting to swing into full ad-blitz mode by the time DC thudded into the market. Sega also failed to get the draw developers (SquareSoft, Konami, etc...), this was a huge factor (in Japan, mostly) that would decide the future of the console. By the time DC made it over here the PS2 buzz had started, the number of initial games was low and the big name developers had bailed, as far as I was (and still am) concerned DC was DOA, only the after-market can keep it alive.
Ten years ago the big N was at the top of the heap, times have changed but IMHO management has done very little to keep the hot developers on board.

I would be concerned if Yahoo! started selling weapons or suicide instructions online, pr0n is everywhere, and it's not evil.
