    You can use Git without GitHub, but GitHub makes it more convenient with an easy interface to comment on pull requests, set up policy regarding if code review is required before merging, etc.

    How does it compare to Savannah, GitLab, and Bitbucket in this respect? Or a self-hosted copy of Savane (Savannah's engine) or GitLab Community Edition?

    I presume that "before GPS and keyboard apps intent on collecting their data to sell to 3rd parties," it was more socially acceptable for users of SMS to misspell things, which allowed them to set autocorrect to a less aggressive level.

  5. But the line between "idea" and "expression" might not like exactly where you think it does. For example, moving and turning falling pieces to fill horizontal lines of a rectangular matrix is not protectable, but doing so where the pieces are made of four aligned squares is. Tetris v. Xio .

    you actually can set an internet connection as 'metered' in Windows 10 so that it doesn't go crazy with updates and the like.

    I thought the GUI to set media cost in Windows 10 worked only for WLAN connections, not wired Ethernet, and setting the media cost of wired Ethernet (such as with a satellite or cellular upstream) still required poking around in the registry. Has this changed?

    Or I could just.. you know... add the word to the dictionary myself the first time it tries to mangle it.

    That works if and only if two things are true: 1. you notice that autocorrect has mangled a given place name, and 2. you are certain of the correct spelling of each place name that you mention. Will both of these be true for the majority of users other than dpidcoe?

    Letter of the law mate. Don't care what they thought then or what they claim now, letter of the law.

    The Supreme Court of the United States has a policy of deferring to Congress on whether a particular statute actually "promote[s] the Progress of Science and useful Arts".

    Letter of the law:

    To promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries.

    How the Supreme Court interprets it when exercising judicial review of copyright-related Acts of Congress:

    To secure for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries, so long as the purported intent is to promote the progress of science and useful arts.

    A. No support for spelling of nearby landmarks
    B. Spelling of nearby landmarks only for a location chosen by the user using a map control
    C. Other (fill in the blank)

    EFTPOS (aka Debit) works when the card is present. But I haven't seen any application of EFTPOS for card not present transactions, such as buying things online. What am I missing?

    a KEYBOARD APP that asks to use "Location Services" (what it is called on iOS) would get UNINSTALLED, PRONTO!!!

    Are you trying to imply that a keyboard that automatically adds the correct spelling of nearby landmarks to its dictionary is inferior to one without this feature? Or should the keyboard instead require each user to manually choose the center of the landmark search area on a map?

    The lack of choice is that the merchant isn't allowed by the credit card to charge more to users of credits cards (including Apple Pay).

    To whom does the merchant pass on the cost of handling cash?

    The MERCHANTS aren't charged ANYTHING. Neither is the CUSTOMER. Only the BANK gets hit for 0.15%. How many times do I have to explain that?

    Could you describe what failed to work about the demo mode of AIDE, and on what device?

    If you want to do professional development, get professional tools.

    they give you the chance to read their content either by showing ads or by allowing them to use some processing resources. A choice in other words, a choice many sites wouldn't give in the first place.

    I choose ads, but I don't choose cross-site tracking. Daring Fireball respects this choice. Why don't other sites?

    But you don't need to go to their website and read content that _they_ pay money to produce and serve. You can choose not to.

    I thought commenting on a Slashdot story after having chosen not to read the featured article had negative consequences.

    If say I could put 10 [currency units] into a pot and have it paid out to sites I visit somehow I'd be happy to do that. Obviously I'd expect not to be bombarded with ads in return.

    This is what Google Contributor is supposed to do. However it has three flaws:

    1. Reloading a page you've already seen this month costs as much as viewing it for the first time this month. This behavior differs from many newspapers' metered paywalls, which count views of unique articles.
    2. It's operated by the same company that also operates the AdSense and DoubleClick services. This means Google probably shares subscribers' click-stream with those services' interest-based advertising engines.
    3. It's unavailable outside the United States, Britain, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand.
