Not that I don't have some of the same concerns about editorial staff as the next person, but I think the article was changed after I submitted the link. I think the headline on the Slashdot article is a direct copy and paste of the Routers story when I submitted it.
Try to get him pointed towards an addon or mod for whatever game he plays. If he writes something successful he'll start to spend more time maintaining that than playing.
If he does it as a project with you or some of his peers it'll be more fun.
I've been looking into building a Myth box. Any suggestions on cards for HD tuners? I've read that none of the current ones actually accept output from a cable or satellite box after it has done the decoding via DVI, HDMI, VGA, YPbPr / Component? So are you only able to save over the air signals?
Didn't the church of Scientology threaten to sue once about stuff that was posted in the comment section? Obviously it has nothing to do with libel.. but might the same hold true based on the "within broad limits, message board operators would not be held responsible for the postings made by others on that board" ?
The site also gives some of the requirements.. Create a compressed version (self-extracting archive) of the 100MB file enwik8 of less than 17MB. More precisely:
* Create a Linux or Windows executable of size S L:= 17'073'018 = previous record.
* If run, it produces (without input from other sources) a 108 byte file that is identical to enwik8.
* If we can verify your claim, you are eligible for a prize of 50'000×(1-S/L). Minimum claim is 500.
* Restrictions: Must run in 10 hours on a 2GHz P4 with 1GB RAM and 10GB free HD.
It runs well on old hardware.. Plenty of us have old pentium 1/2 machines around that aren't doing a whole lot. Windows 98 keeps becoming a worse and worse option with viruses and now the lack of updates. It provides life for an old computer. I ran it for a period of time on a 166 when both of my other machines went down, and while it wasn't super fast, it did everything I needed it to. Plus, I didn't have to go through the trouble of finding a win 98 cd and a key. It's a neat idea, very portable, and has grown a lot as a distro since its early days.
If you know anyone that is a lawyer have them mail t-mobile a letter explaining what you'd like done.. They'll get back to you quickly I'm sure:)
This is one of those cases where having a prepaid legal thing sorta comes in handy.. It's like $25 a month, but each $40 charge helps the service pay for itself. A friend of mine once got a $1500 bill from Sprint and used the lawyer letter method with great success:)
How can you say no one uses paint and notepad? Those are the two most reliable windows apps, and I use them on a regular basis. Well, at least notepad if I'm jotting down a quick phone number or something.
Actually I guess these days I use nano for that, but when I used windows regularly they were useful:)

I think they had $500 million or more in cash.

ITS A PARTY!
I'd been reading Slashdot for several years by then.. but OMG PONIES WAS THE BEST!
I'm curious to know what requirements you think are outdated.
You must work on Saturdays.
