Can't be too sure about it, but prima facie it seems that this WMM thing is not a change at the physical level (which means it is not a new addition to the b,g,a.. series). The change is most probably at the MAC level/network management level which again should not lead to buying of new equipment. Its just got to do with providing a higher priority to streaming to ensure a better QoS.
Well, most of technologies do provide a higher priorty for streaming anyways, so essentially what is unclear is how much of a higher priority is streaming being provided under WMM ?
I am an Indian and I would say that the primary emotion which rushed through me after reading this post was surprise. Surprised I am how politicians can think of ingenious ways to siphon off public money. Anyone who is lived in this country should know well enough that none of the computers will ever see the light of the day.
And my friend, you talk of education contributing to the cause of reduction of education.. well for starts, Uttar Pradesh still boosts of a literacy rate of 30% (which by the way means that none of the teachers are computer literate). And then, secondly, education only ensures that there are more people who share the spoils of corruption. Accountability is what helio-centric would have been in the Dark Ages.
And, just for a moment, if the believer in you screams, maybe for once, the govt. is serious about this one, how many days do you give to the comps surviving in the schools ? Personally, I think a week would be an achievement.
One advise to the person who posted this post. I think you most probably are Indian. Even if the BBC folks were foolish enough to believe this would happen, you could not have been that naive. I am not against selling India to the world, but do not sell apples in Mac boxes.
For a reasonable number of users per channel (say 50), GSM provides a BETTER QoS than CDMA. CDMA is supposed to be good because after a certain limit (of number of users/channel), the deteoriation in GSM is faster than that in CDMA. So strictly from the user point of view, GSM is actually better. Also, if I am not wrong, the UMTS will actually provide higher data-rates to the user than CDMA-2000.
Even as for now, Americans are the most obese nation in the world. If they would start approximating a pound as half a kilo, the US would sure burst at seams.:-)
Well, here in India, the metric system has been prevailing at least since my birth (1983). My parents are pretty ok with the old "Indian" system though, which basically means that the changeover has been pretty fast-paced and efficient.
I would say the major reason has been the usage of metric system in education. I have almost never come across a single problem which talked of length in inches or weight in pounds. At the same time, I remember "Fundamentals of Physics" (by Resnik/Halliday/Walker) hardly had any mention of metre(er) anywhere except the customary appendices.
Well, I do not know about the amount of broadband penetration in other countries, but in India, it is not even tip of the proverbial iceberg. Most people use dial-up only, though hopefully broadband will happen in the not-so-distant future.
However, I have never come across a 3Com modem here. The top-of-the-line were DLink and Motorola some years back and now local brands have taken over.
Perhaps ignoring the small and upcoming markets led to 3Com's doom. 5 years ago, the Chinese cell-phone market was negligible. Motorola still entered it, and today the biggest chunk of its revenue comes from China !!
Well, with Doughlas Adams not around, someone of course had to do the screen-writing. I wished all along that the chosen someone be British.
I am not any of the "ists".. but then as a neutral observer, I would say let the duck float and and let the fish swim. J D Sallinger is funny no doubt, but then comparing him with G B Shaw would be injustice to both. For the more literally challenged of my friends here, check out the difference in the humour of Blackadder or Monty Phython and Friends or Will and Grace.
I don't think Brit and American humour can be mixed. None of them is inferior ( ok that is being neutral to the point of getting irritating, so the confession : I do admire the Brit humour more ).
Hoping this guy proves my doubts to be plain paranoia.
"Microsoft has a 93.9% browser market share and 87% of business users use IE".. beats me how 93% ppl are still using IE and MSN explorer.. and then again.. only 11 % for opera.. guess anyone who think net has more to it then chatting and checking mail can't bear IE or MSN for long enough.. in which case this means only around 10-15 % of ppl use the net for purposes other than mailing and chatting.
The geek doesn't seem to be inheriting the earth in the near future then.
Guess Wi-Fi will become a big thing in the years to come. Its use is not again for individuals though.. it is for offices, corporations, hospitals and stuff.
I guess in the heat of the moment, we often forget that Wi-Fi essentially is wireless LAN. Think of a place like India say, where the majority of computerisation of organisations is still to happen. Don't you think that if I company were to take up the business of providing Wi-Fi solutions to organisations, even to users who want a wireless home, they could be hitting a really huge market.
I would say that thinking that Wi-Fi is just an add-on is myopic. I think it can be the basis of a wireless future for mankind.
For one, ultrawideband is definitely not another name for bluetooth.. it is the technology slated to replace bluetooth, and it is definitely far from over.
And as for bluetooth, as a technology it never came close to serving the purpose it was meant for.. so for the R&D world, it has been dead for quite sometime..
Guess the writer needs to be a bit more informed !

Your bigoted view stinks of "systemism". :-)
