after two days of download I tried to convert it to MPG, unfortunatly no dice here. The problem is that it seems to be Quicktime4(?) and my MPEG converter can only handle Quicktime 3... And a converter to AVI was not available (well it is, but he cannot handle the compressed Audio ).
I moved quite around a bit in the last 18 months, and it didn't went as well as it could have so besides your income (basically you can take it 1:1 on what you earn now) here is my advice:
Something way more important for you then the salary is your moving package when you go abroad (reads: Where you cannot drive by car).
The last two companies (first a US now a Dutch) crossed me quite well. Housing wouldn't be a problem etc.
So in the end I ended up with paying almost 50% of my income on housing.
So after moving from Germany to the US and then to the Netherlands I have decided to do it a third time: Toronto here I come. This time though I go for a big company, might not be fully my enviroment, but at least there I can be sure that they get the thing organized, I am sick of living out of a suitcase.
MMhh, I mean sorry, but if you do something like that I can say I am not surprised. There are certain do's and don'ts and shelling out that much money upfront is a definetly no no!
I know it is hard if you are in love (or something like that), but that doesn't excuse it. Besides, that could also have happend in different ways, by meeting him directly, there are some pretty convincing people out there.
but speaking out of my own experience (I am right now in a similar situation, though I don't know HOW this is going to end) I rather see her happy then forcing me onto her or she into something.
I don't think that leaving the country will help you finishing it, but it distracts.
Those personality types are interresting, but you should mention that there is a WAY more complicated test behind it (around 1000 Questions?) To determine what kind of personality you are.
I agree with you about the personal connection. But I think you can find somebody on the net. Not necessarily have a complete relationship over the net (no, definetly not), but why not start it that way?
Yes, there are obstacles, you cannot be sure if the person on the other end is writing / telling you the truth, but that is when Real Life comes in and you have to kick yourself to meet the other person. That might proof harder then if you started everything "normal" because a rejection at this point can be really hurting, but I wouldn't dismiss the net as a starting point anyway.
Sometimes I have the impression most people don't have a private life on their own as they have to dig so much in others people life.
Looking at the company in the Netherlands I am working right now and the relative open talks that is going on here (and I would say in europe in general), I must say I am not surprised that in the US it happens through Backdoors.
Sad to see another person getting milled through because somebody had to be important....
>>A person who does computer work sits alone in front of a screen.
Mmhh, maybe I am a bit different, but I still have quite some contact with people in my company. Okay I am not a programmer only a SE / SA but I think even as a programmer you look over your monitor from time to time?
Sorry to say that. But after watching the american "culture" a bit closer in the last time (after living 9 months in the US) I can only come to the conclusion that the reaction is TYPICAL american.
Instead of trying to solve the problem they are shooting on the Sympthoms (if lucky) or overreact.
Instead of trying to REALLY figure out what causes such outbreak of violences (gunlaws?) they simply try to find an easy answer.
That won't end, the american society likes to think of itself as free but after living there and in Europe I must say I feel much freer(sp?) in Europe then I do in the US.
Why? In the US everybody tries to cage himself in (e.g. Gated Communities etc.).
America the land of the free? Only if you have so much money that you can choose where to live and WHO your neighbours are... Oh yes, and if you can afford a high enough wall around your house.
I cannot agree with him to kill disabled babys off because of a disability.
Though this raises another question: Why doesn't the law allow somebody else to decide when his / her life is not lifeworthy anymore?
I am not talking about people with a broken heart who want to jump from the next bridge and who now should get a gun by the government to make it sure. I am talking about terminal ill people, who are in pain and who know that they have no way of ever recover.
I liked the idea of the "death computer" they had in Australia, it leaves you alone with your decision if you are REALLY ready to end your life.
Unfortunatly this device is now banned again, because the Austrialian government feared that a "death tourismus" might start. I wonder in what way human life is more precious then any other life? We have the right (and the merciness) to put our Dog to sleep when the pain for him gets to big, but if I had a car accident or develop cancer, and life for MYSELF doesn't make any sense anymore (because of the pain) I have to suffer maybe for YEARS.
The best thing that can happen to you today is die in a car accident right away, otherwise you might be waking up in a living hell, and there is NO way for you to escape.
To make my point: Killing people right after birth because of a defect is something that I cannot combine with my values, but as an adult person (who is allowed to go into war to kill other people) I should be allowed to decide how long I really want to life.
So, as shocking as his ideas might be. I think they stirr (hopefully) enough up to make people think about the value of life, and who should be allowed to make the decisions about it.
as you could easily find things... 4 months ago I found google by accident, use it ever since and only use babelfish from time to time at altavista.... Hope they get the small problems fixed now... I wonder how many linux boxes they have runnning there now....
The problem are not people like "us" who read that and get a good laugh out of it, but people who have no clue about anything.
The fall for his Prosa and "insight" and take it for real.
He will never ever convince anybody who knows at least a tiny bit about computers, but the masses will definetly take it for real, and they won't go to "bad" sides like Attrition.org.
Mmhh, I don't know, but I actually like the Doc on Voyager.. quite funny, and it seems that in the last season they finally got a bit the hang on it.... Compared to the second sesaon...
Oh well, but they still didn't get rid of the "We are the good ones"....
they said they are working on it, and to switch a complete production site is not that easy, and if I am not totally mistaken it is still partly a hobby site.
Besides, when they start to charge membership fees you can start complaining, until then it is annoying but not much you can do.

Actually I heard your call and on the move ;)
:)
Any tips for the Toronto Area, what to look out etc.?
Michael
I agree.
I am in Amsterdam since 4 months, since then I try to find an apartment that I can AFFORD (reads not 4K+).
That is it for me more or less, I've decided to move to another country. Canada is prefered right now....
Michael
After what I read about USB 2.0 I think USB can handle that in the future as well...
Maybe one Standard (USB) is not that bad unlike 2 or 3 competing.
Michael
Even in an Online relationship comes the point where it goes F2F, or you exchange mail adresses... So the "safety barrier" is not there anymore...
;)
Don't fool yourself into it

(Also moving around soon).
>>Life is not about coding
;)
Wrong, totally wrong!
Life is ALL about coding, combining two codes to spawn a child process (or more). So don't say that

Actually the Zeus Software is quite powerful... I liked it a lot while I was working with it :)

I think so as well. I might be wrong but I thought I had read that they had it discontinued... Seems not to be the case.

I don't think they talk about reading news on the computer / net or a book. But rather that people start getting in to chats etc.
That is something I even understand, I can imagine that somebody is simply reducing his contacts to computer people, as they are easier to deal with.
Though the problem here is not the computer but rather the person itself.
The problem I have with this research is that they generalise to much for my taste.
Michael
Last time I checked Miro had problems of its own....
