  1. Re:Typical US mentality on Big Changes In Proposed U.S. Space Budget · · Score: 1

Hey, I agree completely that nuclear energy is environmentally friendly!! That doesn't mean that funds should be withdrawn from environment protection though.

Let me reiterate: nuclear energy is environmentally friendly, infinitely more than coal! If you want to bahs my post, do it for other reasons, because on nuke energy I agree with you.

  2. Typical US mentality on Big Changes In Proposed U.S. Space Budget · · Score: 1

    a) Not only they are going to cut into environmental protection (which, if you ask me, has more impact on people's everyday life and health, than space research), but also
    b) there is no article specifically about it in the news, showing that environment is, for all intents and purposes, irrelevant to the great majority of american society

  3. Re:Hint: They're not compelled at all... on A Closer Look At D-VHS At DVDfile.com · · Score: 1

I was particularly disappointed with DVD audio because I see it as a missed opportunity.

I was hoping DVD will be the media that will allow for more audio storage, to have, for example, all the Beethoven symphonies on one disk, or say, the Wagner "Ring" trilogy or the complete Pink Floyd, or... well, you get the idea. 15 hours of uncompressed audio on one media, welp, that would really help me make some room on my shelves.

Instead, we get one hour, maybe one and a half, on a DVD. Fuck that.

  4. Re:"The studio is bancrupt because the movie was b on Finale for Final Fantasy Studio · · Score: 1

In my opinion, the acting was surprisingly (and unespectedly) good! Much better than what I expected from any animated movie. Childish and silly acting you can find in Akira or any disney movie (where childish fits perfectly).

I could very easily recognize real-life dialogues I had with people, while watching this movie. Expecially Aki, she sometimes reminded me of an ex-girlfriend. Aki sometimes has this warmth in her voice, some kind of friendly intimacy.

well, anyway, you didn't like it, I repsect that. I still think it wasn't an unsuccesful movie overall.

Our lab has about 100 servers (mostly Sun Netra's and HP L-class), each of them has 5 drives in average, about 100 GB per server (rough average).
That's 10 TB. This amount of storage is "active" since the beginning of last year, and we hadn't one single failure.

  6. "The studio is bancrupt because the movie was bad" on Finale for Final Fantasy Studio · · Score: 1

What utter bullshit. Yes, the studio is bancrupt, but that's not because the movie wasn't succesful. The movie netted a total of 104 million dollars, not counting the DVD sales. That's NOT an unsuccess.

The studio failed as an enterprise, because their costs exceeded their incomes, but their product is succesful nonetheless. I predict DVD sales will keep generating significant money long after the close of the Hawaii studio.

  7. Evolution and natural selection IS happenig among on Is Evolution Over In Humans? · · Score: 1

Just one example: when the europeans started invading the american continent, they brought with them a deadly disease, TB (tuberculosis). Native americans were much less resistant to it than europeans, so they died in scores. And even today, TB is much more of a killer for native americans than it is for "white men".

And why is that? Obviously, thousands of years of exposure to TB -has- resluted in natural selection, making europeans more resistant to this particular bacteria.

However, in the future I see more and more an evolution on a larger scale than just individuals. I see evolution on country/geographic zone-level. Let me explain: you as an individual are less important than the large group of people in the geographic area you live in. For example, if indonesians continue deforestations, they get killed in the floods (lack of forests=>soil degradation=>desertification=>unrestrained flood-waters), it doesn't matter whether a single individual in INdonesia gets it, it's the whole country to suffer from the consequences of the majority's action.

It gets even more interesting: human-induced global warming creates a favourable climate for tropical diseases and bugs, more up north. It also creates an unstable environment with very dry intervals interspersed with harsh storms. This will eliminate most of the species (harsh conditions ALWAYS result in in homogenization -lack of diversification) and promote the more resistant ones: rats and roaches. Humans will be hit hard, too. Survival will be based on their geographic location more than on their individual characteristics.

  8. A shame on Finale for Final Fantasy Studio · · Score: 1

Wife and I just watched the DVD last night. It was a very well spent 17 pounds. Stunning and at the same time artisticly impressive animation and a very interesting idea in the plotline. Some of it reminded me Akira, but this one (FF) clicks much better with me, it makes more sense.

What can I say, I like it very much. They did a fantastic job and deserve more success for it.

I see that Decca and Deutsche Grammophone are both Universal labels. This worries me because I love classical music (and Decca and DG used to be a source of great recordings).

But when I looked at the list of CDs that were reported corrupted, I could not find a single classical CD. Is it possible that the recording industry doesn't have them on the radar, or it's just that people who can tell a corrupted from a proper CD, don't buy classical music?

    I hope in the former...........!!

Here's a Linux PDA I think might be a winner.

And an advice: don't buy ANY Linux of WinCE-based PDA before you try a Palm first. You must understand what a PDA is for, whether you need it, and what level of friendliness you need, if you think a PDA can be useful to you.

  20. What about the buggered error correction? on Universal Music Prepares for Copy-Protection Complaints · · Score: 1

How come nobody complains about the factthat UMG is f*ckin up the error correction, in order to achieve copy protection? Peeps, error correction is important! That's one of the things that sets apart CDs from analog media. That's what makes them durable. How would you feel about your dearly payd "CD" (whatever we'll call these silvery discs) if you knew that even the smallest scratch will affect the sound considerably?

Sure, if you live in an environment that is completely dust-free and you never-ever touch the surface of your CDs, well, then you are safe. I know such an environment: it's called fab, and is the place where CPUs are made. Other than that, you are going to live with dust. And dust means scratches, albeit small enough that your eye can't see it (but certainly bigger than 1.3 micron, the width of a CD track).

Well, one more motivation to rip these silvery things: you must do it to have a backup that you can actually use, wile the original will stay somewhere airtight sealed. UMG really knows how to encourage us to do proper things!!
