I have a very nice collection of DVDs and VHS tapes. It's nice not because it's vast, because it's not. I consider it nice because it contains some rare movies which I really love but will never be reprinted on DVD. What are teh chances that those movies will be transferred to the new standard? Zero.

They will stop making traditional VCRs and DVD players. No big deal for the DVD, since I am reasonably sure they'll do them backwards compatible (or will they? Let's not forget that greed is powerful, maybe they will force the consumers to buy again all their titles), but not VCRs. And I have some of the best things on VHS tapes.

Just look at those poor bastards with laser discs. Noone makes LD players anymore. Who the hell cares? Once your last LD player breaks, you are fucked. Not to talk about the fact that some titles had much nicer features on LD than on DVD. Why? Because the movie industry doesn't give a shit about customer satisfaction. They are after the dough. All these bastards care about making money, not about high quality whatever. They shape your needs "you need HDTV because it's so much better, you need DD 6.1, because the sound is so much better, and btw. you need a new DVD player that can do HD, and a new VCR that can do HD..."

    It's all screwed up.

  5. To be honest.. on FCC And More HDTV Rules · · Score: 3

I am actually glad that pushing HDTV runs into so much obstacles. I have really no use for HDTV because I just don't see any fucking difference! No, really, and I believe there are people who do, but is it really that relevant? To me, this is like those freaks that shun CD players because the sound is "so unnatural", and prefere 100 times more expensive turntable players, with egzotic mechanisms, materials and pickups. Maybe they can hear some difference, but not me. Heck, I am even thinking of selling my Adcom GCA 510, because it's just too good for my ears, I don't hear any difference between this and some cheap Pioneer receiver.

If HDTV becomes a mandated product (because of FCC's decision) and more of them hit the market, in no time will current VCR and DVD players become obsolete. Oh sure, there is backwards compatibility... till when? The same which happens with home surround systems: my Yamaha DSP E1000 does only Dolby Surround 2.0, so it's obsolete, I should rather buy a AX1 which supports 5.1 and DTS. And what next? Some fucker will invent Dolby Shorpround 10.5, for a "really really realistic experience". Fuck that.

    So, HDTV anyone? And why?

OKAY, but what about this: I have setup a slackware box to have 2 nics, because on one it gets the IP address via DHCP, from the DSL device (it's some sort of hub, but it gives you only 1 IP address) while on the other it works as a DHCP server for my internal network. How would you solve this, with only one nic? Making all the internal network addresses static is not very good, as I like to hook my laptop there sometimes, when I bring it from work, so it's much less trouble to just boot it and get an IP address, than boot it, change to static IP address, and then reboot it. The other computers enjoy the benefit of DHCP in a similar fashion.

If you have a solution to this, I would be very grateful. I would save one perfectly good NE2000, and the wiring would be much simpler.

If you think VCDs are not interesting, wait until one day you decide you want to transfer your collection of VHS tapes to something more lasting. I know I will do this with some of my rare movies on VHS.

Another good thing with the DV 525 is that there are many solutions to multi-region enable it. Also, it's generally considered one of the best value DVD players. A real shame it's not produced anymore.

If Memory Stick tech is licensed, then you WILL need a possibly expensive/clumsy/power-consuming drive to read them.

Uh, you are not trying to troll here, are you? Do I even need to answer this flaming BS?

But I guess, based on the rest of your post, that you are not trolling, so I will try to answer: there is no need for a "drive" in the case of memory sticks, as they are solid-state. All you need is a port, with electronics integrated somewhere on the PCB (totally invisible, actually, due to it's simplicity. It's not like you need an AHA 2940 to write into a memory stick). So, it's not clumsy, and it's not expensive. Sony woud shoot itself in thefoot if it asked lots of $$$ for the license. They want to sell the media, not the license for the readers. Power consuming? Ummm... maybe you were trolling, after all.

You're not even a good sport, you don't see how such a miniature media, that can carry a LOT of data, can appeal to people. And it does. MDs are still widely popular in Japan and in Europe. Have you seen those MD walkmans that can record? They're so tiny, and totally cool! Now imagine how tiny you can go when you replace an MD with a very very small memory stick. Oh yes, this thingy has a huge potential, just you wait 'enry 'iggins, just you wait!

And, as an added bonus, we don't get fired for pesky little things like using the Internet for our own purposes, or even (shock horror) browsing sex sites. I hear that in US there is a paranoic atmosphere around employers monitoring what their employees do on the Internet. Well, fuck them! I have not sold my soul to my employer!
