Hmm... and the specs are not that bad, either.

I have a bootable BeOS r. 4.0 CD, that I got with PCPlus a year or so ago. I was flabbergasted when I could boot it on my Thinkpad, with both video and the soundcard perfectly working! I tried the famous BeOS teaser, so I started 4 quicktime movies FROM THE CD!!! and it managed perfectly!

I could actually burn the image of BeOS 5 to a CD and this should work, too. And there is some limited storage on the flash memory. Wonder if that could be mounted as a drive....

Yep, GPL may eventually be honored, but how many Linux users bought a GeForce256-based graphics card, just because they saw a Linux driver coming up?
But that's not my point. The point is that they will release a closed-source driver. That means, if you use Linux or Windoze, you'll be OK, but you're fucked if you use anything else. That means, Nvidia goes bust, noone can develope new drivers for your card. That means, no development contribution possible, by the X community.
The spirit of OSS is violated, even if the GPL is not.

I am kinda fond of FreeBSD, although, to say the truth, it's a bit more "coarse" than a typical Linux distro. I guess you know what I mean, starting from the shell onwards. However, I happen to be a big Slackware fan, and I really like the BSD inits. Slackware is anyway the best Linux distro around.

FreeBSD is quite popuar in our labs here at my company, because the TCP/IP stack is considered better written than the Linux one. It's not performance problems, Linux is OK with that, it's some advanced features that don't work quite good on Linux, like OSPF and source routing.

So, I have been looking around for some commercial backing, like the one Linux enjoyed in recent times. This seems to be the first one, and I hope there will be more. Congrats to the *BSD community.
(On a side note: I am also a BeOS user, and for some reason the typical BeOS network will have FreeBSD as a server, and same goes for a pro-BeOS site.)

interviewed by Computer Channel. "The Computer Channel reporter got it completely
wrong. I said nothing of BeOS development being halted, and we have no plans to do
so." A complete quote from Potts follows.

    According to Potts,

"This is a drastic misinterpretation of my words. I said nothing to the
reporter about BeOS development being halted. I simply reiterated the
same thing Be has been saying for months, about our shift in focus to
Internet Appliances. Obviously, we need to continue BeOS
development. BeOS is the development platform for BeIA, as well as
our 'calling card.' Strong visibility for BeOS is strong visibility for Be
and BeIA. We've just completed a major launch of BeOS 5, we've
struck deals with Gobe and international BeOS distributors, and we've
just promoted Dave Johnson to BeOS Product Manager.

I'm puzzled by the reporter's misinterpretation of my words. The
reporter was young, but his English seemed fine, and the whole
interview is on tape. Our PR firm was also present, and can verify that I
said nothing of the sort. I can't in my wildest imagination figure out
where the reporter got this idea from what was said during the
interview. We didn't head down that path at all."

  13. Re:Athlon "is better?" perspective on Pentium 3 Vs. Athlon - Which Is Right For You? · · Score: 2

In theory, it makes sense because P[Watt]=U[Volt]*I[Ampere] for continuous current, while for alternate current ou just dvide the right side of the equation by two.
However, this is a ver simplified explanation, so it's not correct because it doesn't take into consderation the internal impedance of the consumer, in this case, the graphics card. If the graphics card needs more power, it actually means it has lower internal impedance, and will, therefore, "suck" more current (I=U/R). This, on the other hand, will cause a drop of potential in the power source, affecting all the other components connected to it.
The only solution to such problem is, therefore, not "upping the voltage" since the power source is already experiencing a voltage drop. The solution is to buy a more powerful power source, which will be able to provide the necessary current without a drop of potential.

  15. Sorry for butting in this late in the discussion on BeOS Boo-Boo: Violating The GPL -- Updated · · Score: 2

I'll be adding my two pennies, if anyone is interested.
First, Be inc. always tried to comply with the GPL by publishing the source of the GPLed software they used. I have a BeOS 4.5.2 CD on my shellf, and the sources are there, in gzipped packets.

Second, I think Bruce handled this issue in a relatively nice manner, but NOT completely unpeccable. Be is a small company that gives credit to the OSS by using some and giving some other back to the community. As I understand, a BeOS engineer called almost immediately (in less than 6 hours?) to clarify the issue. Could not Bruce wait and then post a story with a title "Be involuntarily violates GPL, problem alrady solved"

Third, do you realize how bad this is for the GPL? Big companies (like Nokia, for example) were unwilling to use GPL-ed software anyway, giving BSD much bigger a chance, exactly because of this kind of potential incidents. Now the management will have confirmed their fears: "If we use GPL, we put ourselves to risk of lawsuits". Companies like Nokia are a very sweet cake for several interest grops (and their lawyers) that are waiting for an opportunity to sue, no matter how frivolous the lawsuit may be. It's all about money. I can tell you, Nokia is avoiding GPL like poison, and this story won't make them use it, either. BSD, on the other hand, seems to be welcome.

I am NOT against the GPL, not at all. But I think handling this matter more gracefully could only benefit GPL.
