  1. Re:A simple question question: on The Definitive Episode 3 Spoiler Synopsis · · Score: 1

I've thought about it too, and the one consistant thing I could find between jedi's who disapeared and those who didn't, and that is those jedi who willingly gave themselves to death disapeared. Obi Wan gave himself up when fighting Vader in Ep4. Yoda gave himself up to old age in ROTJ. And it was those two who faded. Qui Gon was fighting and hadn't consigned himself to die, so he didn't disapear. Same deal with all the jedi in AOTC. Vader though is the one grey area in my theory. He didn't disapear even though he kinda accepted his death, but he was trying to kill Luke up until he got beat down. So maybe it's not a perfect theory, but it works well enough for me.

  2. It's not really feasable.... on Software Approvals For Consumer Markets? · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's hard to test software for every possible use of it. Maybe for very specific propriatary software you can test every possible use and senario, but try testing everything you can possibly do with windows. Though you could force a company to test the hell out of specific uses of the software, like security, and possibly get certain aspects improved while other less essential areas just slide on by. However, this will never happen, as it would slow down the release and development of new software. Software companies can dump a lot of money into politicians and their campaigns to make sure they don't pass legislation making this kind of review mandatory for software. Look at cigarrettes. Their lobbyers have kept a deadly product with no redeaming value on the market, and it's less strictly regulated than meat or milk. Money buys everything, and Bill Gates has a lot of it.

  4. I can probably find it faster. on Remote-Controlled Robot Could Browse The Stacks · · Score: 2, Insightful

If I know the title and author of the book I'm looking for, I can find it just as easily, and odds are I can outrun this little robot. Now, if I ask the robot a question (IE, What causes Parkinson's Disease?) and it brings me back the most relevant book on that question, that'd be awesome.

  5. Continuing the analogy further.... on The Blind Men and the Elephant · · Score: 2, Funny

Sometime though, a programmer will grope the wrong part of the elephant. It'll get startled, kick two of the programmers, and charge through the wall, destroying the building. Then zoologists in the realworld will hear that a pre-release elephant is on the loose and try and get pictures of it. Then the zoo postpones releasing Grey Elephant 1.0 since everyone has seen it, and says it will come a few months later after they've made the elephant pink and can fly.

  6. Is it the same as the real thing? on Linux PCs Drive 74-Channel Pipe Organ · · Score: 5, Interesting

Quite impressive yes, but there are just some things that can't be accurately recreated by technology, and musical instruments as grand as this are some of them. You can recreate the sound of a single pipe yes, but you can't recreate the ambiance and neuance that comes from having an entire pipe system in place. Pipes can resonate when similar notes in different octives are played, which adds different timbres and depth to the sound. Also, now that there aren't vast cavities in the well where the pipes used to be, or the wall cavities are filled differently, the sound will bounce around differently and give a different sound than what was originally thre. This is something that a computer can't really recreate or compensate for, as even humans don't quite understand how sound works all the time (Look at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in Troy NY, engineers and architects are still doing tests to see why a 150 year old music hall got some of the best acoustics in the world entirely by accident.) It's a great marvel, but it's not the same.

  8. Re:not looking forward.... on Peter Jackson Hints At The Hobbit · · Score: 2, Interesting

Why is there always so much bitching about every sequel that comes out (Reloaded sucked, X2 sucked, Two Towers sucked, blah blah blah). The fact of the matter is that Two Towers was a good movie, and you're expectations are getting out of hand. The first movie was great, and then thing about great movies is that they are hard to match, much less top. Had this much talent and effort gone into any other movie that wasn't the sequal to Fellowship, it would be up for best picture. Everyone expects these movies to be uber-fantastic and if it falls short in any respect compared to the first movie (or your own expectations), it automatically sucks. We've seen the same thing in M. Night Shamalan's movies. The sixth sense was a great movie, but to match that is quite a feat, and thus Unbreakable and Signs (Two very good movies) ended up "sucking" to everyone. Hell, you even see this kind of behavior in regards to sports teams. If the Yankees don't win the world series, they suck. Nevermind that they've won the AL and been to the world series twice in the last 3 years, if they aren't the champions, it means they suck. Get some perspective on things people!!! :::Angry Rant Off:::
