This is totally off-topic, sorry 'bout that. Didn't know where else to submit this question...
How come I get 503 errors? I've been experiencing this for about 2 weeks now. Didn't seem to be happening before. It'd be one thing if it was all the time, but it's not. Is it slashdot, or my choice of browser (firefox)?
2nd question is: how come sometimes there is text that renders as ^D^D^D^D^D^D sometimes. I think it's when someone tries to use a special character that my browser (again firefox) doesn't support, but I don't know how to fix this. Again, slashdot is the only place I experience this.
I tell you that I do trust my windows machine with nothing more than a software firewall between itself and the internet.
Oh - I forgot, and this is going to really get you pissed. I also have a wireless router with wireless enabled, and no WEP (like WEP is actually equivalent anyways).
Yup. I rock. I have no security on my network at my house and I don't give a shit. As soon as I get hacked, or my identity stolen, I'll let you all know.
I'm the usual Joe Q who uses my windows machine at home for email, games (Urban Terror Mod), and surfing the net...I don't need to have the best security in the world. Besides, no matter what I do, someone, somewhere could hack into my computer in a matter of minutes. I know that. But because I'm nobody with nothing special on my machine, I don't see a need to get all paranoid about it. I think running a free software firewall, a free anti-virus program, and keeping windows up to date is about all you need to do if you are an average user...
How come I hear about situations like this, but it never happens to me? Maybe I'm not moronic enough to install every free application that comes my way, or maybe I'm just lucky.
I use AVG Free, ZoneAlarm, and regularly install the latest updates from the windowsupdate site. I never get viruses, I never get worms, I never have spyware on my machine. The most Ad-Aware and Spybot find when I run them on my machine are cookies...
I don't know what everyone else does to get their machines infected all the time...maybe everyone else is just unlucky...
1) Install a hardware firewall.
Agreed - not needed.
2) Install a software firewall.
Zone Alarm is free.
3) Install a quality antivirus program.
AVG Free is free.
4) Install Ad-Aware - preferably the Pro version with Ad-Watch.
Ad-Aware is free. You don't really need the pro version.
5) Install Spybot.
Spybot is free.
There is pretty much nothing you cannot do with Notes. It is definately not open, and if you don't have it as your mail server, or on your system, this solution will not work for you. If, however, your mail system is on Notes, use a custom Lotus Notes DB.
Go find a single philosopher who said anything remotely similar. Cash is not what counts. I'm not going to pretend that I know what does count, but it certainly is not cash.
I used to work for IBM in a job I liked, except that I had to travel. The hours were not that great either. I didn't love the job at all, but it wasn't bad at all. The traveling on the other hand was just too much for myself and my new wife and family (consists of 2 dogs and 2 cats). My brother gave me some advise. He said: "Nobody on their death bed has said, 'I wish I would have worked just one more day.'" And I listened to this advise and quit my job for a shittier, lower paying IT job so I could stop traveling and spend more time with my new family.
Although you are right about just about everthing in your post, cash is not what counts...Please mod parent down.
Apparently people just don't like other people pointing out spelling and/or grammar mistakes (or as you put it "word substitution")...one of my friends is a horrible speller and I call him on it all the time, but in a friendly way.
Your original post on the other hand, (most of which I didn't understand) first ripped the parent a new a-hole, then on top of that had to comment on their lack of using the correct "thar" (copied from dictionary.com). It was not done in a friendly way. This is probably the reason so many people picked apart your message.
At least most of you guys didn't hide behind AC posts. That's cool at least.
"While you're explaining things...try explaning the difference between 'there' and 'their' chief."
I think what you meant was, "While you're explaining things...try explaIning the difference between 'there' and 'their', chief."
Please note not only the "I" but also the comma. If you're going to be an ass and insult someone's grammar or spelling, at least try and get it right, chief.
aha! thanks
saelloil? what the hell does that mean?
awesome!
yes! lucky you!
thanks a bunch!

I think you meant stakes.
Let's hope this is better than the phantom console.
Thanks for the info!
Man I'm gross that I know that.
My wife has a diesel bug and she has been paying a lot less than I have over the past few weeks with the high prices, AND she gets the better mileage.
Do you know why it is that gasoline and diesel do not fluctuate at the same rate?
1. Diesel powered cars get better gas mileage than their gasoline powered equals
2. Diesel doesn't fluctuate as much as gasoline, and right now (in Mpls, MN at least) is about 20 cents cheaper per gallon.
ahhh...very good, very good...didn't see the "." before...

Those things you're missing are
1) Install a hardware firewall.

Secondly, according to this article, cubicles aren't sterile. :)
