Yes, he may eventually be "vindicated", but what I see here is a worrisome attitude towards the user and developer communities. "We (I) know what's best, no matter how many people in the community present reasoned arguments to the contrary. If you complain about our decisions you're just a whiner, and we're going to censor you to the extent we can. Oh, and we have hidden secret information we're not telling you, so you can't possibly know what we're talking about." It's walking on thin ice at best, juvenile and egotistical at worst.

this strikes me as an inexperienced attitude. have you never run a large website before? can you imagine trying to poll the community on every decision? or ANY decision, for that matter, it doesn't work. people's opinions change with the breeze and rarely have anything to do with logic nor necessarily infer that they'll be best for the project.

i've donated a chunk of change to mozilla for their great browser long ago and i trust that they have our best interests at mind then and now, and thus am looking forward to seeing 0.9.

i've always found the qute theme to be ugly from the get go and have been using this theme for many months, it's easy on the eyes and functions well.

for those who aren't convinced by the OQO, there are a few other handtops coming out -- comparison chart that might be better targeted to your needs. i reckon most people will be into the FlipStart PC because of it's clamshell design, slightly better specs and cheaper price, but it's not due out until Q1 2005.

read this basic introduction to the FlipStart as well as this updated one if you're interested in the FlipStart (and other handtops).

  3. Re:No bad publicity? on LinSpire LPhoto and LSongs: bring on the lawsuits! · · Score: 1

my sentiments exactly, rpbailey1642. the same goes with the SCO coverage, it's a love-hate relationship. i can't get enough of it cuz i want to see the ****ers put away and have the geeks win, but at the same time you have to wonder how all the extra traffic a company get's when there's bad news, encourages them to do more bad things.

it's like children who get more attention when they do bad things, if they like the attention, they learn very quickly that they can do bad things and they'll get loads of attention, punishment be damned.

what responsibility (and yes, i think it should be) should slashdot play in not encouraging the bad behaviour? or is it too presumptuous to assume that slashdot's effect is THAT big?

that's not a hard and fast rule, nolife. my 10 year old brother PREFERS the side scrollers, but at the same time he's absolutely addicted to HALO. super metroid and legend of zelda for SNES rate very highly for him. amongst those thousands of MAME games, i challenge you to enjoy some of them :) some of it's just garbage. some are absolute gems not just limited to a certain audience.

nostalgia is one of the stronger powers, actually. stronger than that, tho, is the dissapointment that comes from attempting to regain that same all-encompassing ball of senses (rush tapes and shasta included) that you had when you first played that classic game (ANY game you consider classic).

that said tho, the new galaga versions kick ass, faster play, faster shooting, tasty graphics while maintaining the flat-down perspective. of course there's hope and love for games, just don't go looking to be a 10 year old again.

  10. Re:Blame SPAM because... on Another Worm Targets Anti-Spam Sites · · Score: 1

well, i agree with you -- no large group should ever have to suffer the consequences of a smaller group's misdeeds. but that lesson is applicable in all things in life. you know the stereotypical movie setting where someone does something nasty in class and if the kids don't fess who did it, they're all going to get held for detention. well, we are all being held in detention, and perhaps we should find those who're helping spam by clicking those links. i imagine tho, that perhaps it's not such a small amount of people, but rather an incredible large % of recipients.

  11. why blame spam? on Another Worm Targets Anti-Spam Sites · · Score: 4, Interesting

i have yet to see anyone point out WHY spam is actually as effective as it is -- people buy into it!

if spam wasn't a money-maker, spammers wouldn't exist, it's as simple as that. just like if diets weren't such a huge industry, you wouldn't be seeing posters on how you could lose 30lbs in 30 days plastered all over your city (the birth of spam, might i add).

if all these men just stopped caring about the size of their weenies, spam would take a huge hit. if we'd all be a bit smarter and not even consider clicking on insurance / any financial links in spam, that market would also take a huge hit. and if we were all more passionate with our partners then that takes care of goat / bestiality porn. the 'barely legal' crap, you have to deal with on your own. that's just wrong.

honeypots, bayesian filters, spam blockers, LAWS... so much time, effort and money is being put into something that will only be solved once we start dealing with our own insecurities / needs.
